What clearing Steam’s download cache actually does
The Download Cache command removes locally cached data that Steam can reacquire from its servers. Steam documents the reset as a remedy for downloads that stall or games that will not start when cached configuration or download data has become unusable.

This is a client-level reset, not a game-removal operation. It does not uninstall games from your Linux library, erase the game files that are already installed, or require you to download those games again solely because you cleared the cache.

What you need before starting
- A running Linux installation with the Steam desktop client installed.
- Permission to sign in to the Steam account that owns or has access to the library.
- A reliable way to complete the login after Steam restarts, including any account verification step Steam requests.
- Enough time for Steam to reconnect and reacquire its cached configuration data.
You do not need a reinstall image, a second copy of a game, a paid utility, or a separate cache-cleaning program. The supported operation is the control on Steam’s Downloads settings page.
Step-by-step: clear the cache in Steam for Linux
- Launch Steam. Wait for the desktop client to finish opening. If a game or download is running, close it first so the reset can restart the client cleanly.
- Open the Steam menu. In the client window, choose Steam, then select Settings.
- Open Downloads. Select Downloads in the Settings navigation.
- Choose the reset control. Scroll to the bottom of the Downloads page and click Clear Download Cache.
- Confirm the prompt. Steam warns that the client will need to reconnect and that you will be required to sign in again. Accept the confirmation to proceed.
- Sign in again. After the client restarts, or after it returns to the login screen, enter your Steam credentials and complete any requested verification.
The exact placement or wording of the control can change between Steam client releases. If the labels are slightly different, look for the same Clear Download Cache action on the Downloads settings page rather than attempting to remove random folders from your home directory.
Why Steam asks you to log in again
Clearing the cache flushes local client data and makes Steam obtain fresh configuration information from its servers. The restart discards the current cached session state, so Steam asks you to authenticate again before it resumes normal account and library access.
This login is separate from reinstalling a game. Once authentication is complete, Steam can rediscover the library and continue using the installed files. If the client appears to be downloading a game after you sign in, check the game’s installation status and download queue before assuming that the files were deleted; the cache reset itself is not an uninstall command.
What the reset preserves—and what it does not target
Installed game files
Installed games are preserved. Clearing the global download cache is therefore appropriate when several downloads behave incorrectly or the Steam client has broad download-related problems, but it is not a method for repairing the content of one particular game.

Steam Cloud and account data
Steam’s Linux Cloud documentation identifies account and game-related userdata under ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata. That directory is not the target of the built-in Download Cache command. Do not delete it when your goal is only to flush download cache data; removing userdata can affect account- and game-related information.
Cached download and configuration data
The operation is intended to flush local cached download and configuration information and reacquire it from Steam’s servers. It is global to the client rather than limited to one title, which is why it is useful for a system-wide download symptom but excessive for an isolated game-file problem.
Why manually deleting folders is usually the wrong first move
Linux troubleshooting documentation refers to appcache and depotcache in the Steam installation folder as possible manual troubleshooting targets after Steam has been exited. Those folders are not a general invitation to delete everything under the Steam directory.
Manual deletion is easier to get wrong than the supported button. A mistyped path, an active Steam process, or removal of the wrong directory can create a different problem from the one you started with. Use the client command first. Consider folder-level instructions only when a specific Steam troubleshooting procedure calls for them, and exit Steam completely before touching any installation-folder cache.
In particular, do not substitute the account-data path ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata for the cache directories. It serves a different purpose and should be left intact for this task.

Choose the next fix by the symptom
If clearing the cache does not solve the problem, repeating the same global reset is unlikely to help. Steam’s update and installation guidance identifies three more targeted actions. Match the action to the scope of the failure:

Use file verification for a single-game failure
When one installed title will not launch, crashes after an update, or reports missing content while other games work, use Steam’s Verify Integrity of Game Files action for that title. Verification is scoped to the selected game, unlike the global download-cache reset.
This distinction prevents unnecessary client-wide resets. Clearing the cache can refresh Steam’s download state, but it does not replace damaged files inside a game installation. Verification is the appropriate follow-up when the symptom points to one game’s content.
Repair the library folder for library or permission errors
If Steam identifies a library-folder problem, use Repair Steam Library Folder rather than deleting cache directories. A library repair targets the folder’s configuration or access condition. It is the narrower response when Steam cannot use a library location correctly, even though the download cache itself is not the underlying cause.
Do not confuse a library repair with reinstalling the library. The action is intended to repair the existing Steam library location, while the installed game files remain the subject of the library rather than disposable cache data.

Change the download region for regional performance problems
Download speed and reliability can depend on the regional server Steam is using. If the client connects normally but downloads are persistently slow or a particular region appears unhealthy, use Steam’s Change Download Region setting.
A region change addresses the server endpoint selection; it does not repair corrupted local cache data or damaged game files. Conversely, clearing the cache is not a substitute for changing regions when the symptom is consistently regional performance.
Common situations after the reset
Steam returns to the login screen
This is expected. Sign in to the same account and allow Steam to finish reconnecting. The required login is part of the documented reset behavior.
Your games still appear in the library
That is the expected result because installed games are not removed by clearing the Download Cache. You can continue troubleshooting the original download or launch problem without reinstalling those titles.

The original download problem remains
Stop repeating the global reset and identify the scope of the symptom. Use file verification for one game, library repair for a library-folder or permission error, or a different download region for a regional-performance issue. These actions target different failure modes.
You are tempted to remove userdata
Do not do so for a cache reset. Linux Steam userdata is associated with account and game-related information, not merely transient download cache. Leave ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata in place unless a separate, specific troubleshooting instruction tells you otherwise and explains the consequences.
The button is not exactly where an older guide shows it
Steam’s menu wording and layout are client-version dependent. Start from the Steam client menu, open Settings, select Downloads, and look near the bottom for the cache-clearing control. A changed layout does not justify deleting folders manually.
A safe decision sequence
- Confirm that the problem involves Steam downloads or broad client behavior rather than only one game.
- Run Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache.
- Confirm the reset and sign in again when Steam restarts.
- Test the original operation once Steam has reconnected.
- If only one game is affected, use Verify Integrity of Game Files for that title.
- If Steam reports a library or access problem, use Repair Steam Library Folder.
- If the symptom is slow or unreliable regional downloading, use Change Download Region.
- Avoid deleting
userdata; reserve manual removal ofappcacheordepotcachefor a specific instruction that requires it, with Steam fully exited.
What clearing the cache cannot tell you
There is no universal cache-size reduction, download-speed increase, or reclaimed-disk figure for this operation. The amount of cached data depends on the individual Linux installation and its workload, so a successful reset should be judged by whether the reported download or launch behavior improves—not by a promised number of gigabytes recovered.
Likewise, the reset does not establish that a game’s files are healthy, that a library folder has the correct permissions, or that a regional server is performing well. Those are separate conditions covered by the targeted follow-up actions above.
Bottom line for Linux Steam users
Use Steam’s own Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache command. It refreshes local cached download and configuration data without uninstalling your installed games, and Steam will require a new sign-in afterward. Keep ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata untouched. If the issue is limited to one game, a library folder, or a download region, switch to the corresponding targeted Steam action instead of repeatedly clearing the global cache.
