Clean white canvas sneakers gently by hand: brush off dry dirt, use a small amount of mild soap and lukewarm water, wipe away all residue, then air-dry them at room temperature away from heat and direct sunlight. Check the care instructions for your exact shoe first; bleach and machine washing are not safe defaults for every sneaker.
What you need
- A soft-bristle brush or clean, soft cloth
- Mild dish soap and lukewarm water, or mild non-bleach laundry detergent and warm water
- A second clean cloth and a towel
- Paper towels, if you want to help the shoes hold their shape while drying
Clean the sneakers by hand
- Check the shoe’s care instructions. Follow the guidance for the specific model if it gives a cleaning method or rules out washing. For example, Converse says not to machine wash or dry its shoes.
- Remove the laces and loose dirt. Brush dry dirt off the canvas before adding water so you do not work grit into the fabric.
- Mix a mild cleaning solution and spot-test it. Use a small amount of mild dish soap in lukewarm water, or mild laundry detergent in warm water, consistent with the shoe’s instructions. Test the solution on a hidden area first, as Converse recommends.
- Gently clean the canvas. Dampen a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush with the solution and work over the fabric without soaking it. Avoid vigorous scrubbing: adidas cautions that hard brushing can fray or fade material.
- Remove the soap. Wipe the canvas with a clean damp cloth or fresh clean water to take off the remaining solution. Blot excess moisture with a towel. Removing residue is sensible care, but it is not a guarantee against yellowing.
- Air-dry slowly. Let the shoes dry fully at room temperature, away from direct heat and sunlight. You can loosely stuff them with paper towels to help maintain their shape; replace the paper if it becomes damp. Clean the laces separately and let them dry before relacing.
Why white canvas can turn yellow
There is no single confirmed cause for every yellowing shoe. DSW identifies harsh chemicals such as chlorine bleach reacting with a shoe’s material or glue as possible causes, and also warns that excess heat or direct sunlight during drying may contribute to discoloration. Treat these as potential risks, not a universal explanation or a guaranteed way to reverse existing yellowing. DSW’s canvas-shoe guidance is retailer advice, not a controlled comparison of causes.

Should you use bleach or a washing machine?
Bleach
Do not make chlorine bleach your first choice. Guidance varies: Clorox allows diluted bleach on bleach-safe white canvas when the shoe maker permits it, and Nike’s white-shoe guide describes a diluted bleach method for canvas. By contrast, DSW warns that bleach may damage material or sole glue, while Converse’s instructions favor mild soap. Check the instructions for your exact shoes, spot-test any permitted cleaner, and avoid bleach if the manufacturer’s guidance is unclear.

Machine washing
Use a washing machine only if the shoe maker explicitly approves it for your model. Converse prohibits machine washing and drying its shoes; Nike warns that machine washing canvas shoes can cause unnecessary wear or construction damage. Clorox also advises following the manufacturer because only a few shoe makers recommend machine washing. Hand-cleaning is the safer general approach when the instructions do not authorize a machine.
