For most Android users, start with Valve’s Steam Link app: Valve documents connecting it to the Steam Frame device named “frame” to view the headset remotely. If you also need recordings, the independent Stream Frame app offers that feature, but its live video and selected audio travel over unencrypted UDP on your local network. Its developer advises using a trusted network. The available documentation does not establish Steam Link’s encryption details, so it does not support a claim that one route is more secure than the other.
Which Android option should you use?
| Option | Best fit | Setup and security evidence | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Link | Viewing the Steam Frame headset view remotely through Valve’s documented Android workflow. | Connect to the headset named “frame.” Valve’s general Android guidance says the phone and host PC should be on the same network. The cited pages do not specify encryption details for this viewing path. | Valve’s support page describes the Android app as free; check the current app store listing for availability and terms. |
| Stream Frame by Boxtree, Inc. | Live viewing plus recording and retrieving captures from the headset. | Requires additional headset configuration. SSH encrypts login, control, and recording downloads; live video and selected audio use unencrypted UDP on the local network. | The Google Play listing showed $2.99 when checked for this article; the price may change. |
Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences, according to Valve’s Steam Frame documentation. For the phone-viewing workflow specifically, Valve’s device instructions make Steam Link the clearest starting point. Choose Stream Frame only if its recording functions matter to you and its setup and network-security trade-offs suit your situation.

Connect to Steam Frame with Steam Link
Valve’s Steam Frame Debugging documentation says: “You can use Steam Link to view the headset’s view remotely. Using the iOS or Android app just connect to frame.” The name to look for in the app is therefore frame.

- Install Steam Link on your Android device. Valve’s Android Steam Link support page points to Google Play and says Android users without Google Play can download the app from Steam.
- Put the phone and host PC on the same network, following Valve’s general Android setup guidance.
- Open Steam Link and connect to the Steam Frame entry named frame, as directed by Valve’s device-specific instructions.
Valve’s Steam Frame page also documents a desktop route: open Steam settings, select Remote Play, then choose Connect next to the Frame. That is a desktop instruction, not a substitute for the Android app’s device-name guidance.

What Stream Frame adds—and what it requires
Stream Frame is an independent Android app, not Valve’s Steam Link app. Its Google Play listing describes live viewing, recording, and downloading recordings from Steam Frame. The listing says live preview is silent; selected headset audio is included in recordings. Its stated default recording mix is 35% game audio and 65% microphone audio, and the developer says the mix can be changed before connecting.
Prepare the headset and network
According to the app listing, live streaming requires Developer Mode, SSH with a configured password, ffmpeg/ffprobe with specified codecs, access to /dev/video99, and the phone and headset on the same local network. The app can connect using frame.local, a DNS hostname, or the headset’s local IPv4 address. These are the developer’s setup claims; no independent compatibility or performance testing is established here.

Know where recordings go
The listing says recording mode saves the original MP4 on the headset before transfer and that downloads are verified after capture. It also says headset recording is on by default, with recordings remaining in /home/steamos/Videos/StreamFrame until deleted. The live stream stops if you switch apps or lock the Android device. If storage use or privacy matters, account for the retained originals and delete them deliberately when no longer needed.
Compare the security claims carefully
Stream Frame’s listing distinguishes its encrypted SSH functions from its live media transport: SSH encrypts login, control, and recording downloads, while live video and selected audio travel over unencrypted UDP on the local network. Do not treat the live preview as encrypted in transit; the developer recommends using a trusted network.

The listing’s data-safety answers say “No data shared with third parties” and “No data collected.” Those are developer-provided declarations and may change; they do not alter the separate statement that live video and selected audio use unencrypted UDP.
Valve’s cited Steam Link pages establish the official viewing route and general Android network guidance, but do not state protocol-level encryption details for this particular use. That omission is not evidence that Steam Link is encrypted or unencrypted, and it does not justify ranking it as more secure than Stream Frame.
