How to Clean Sweat and Earwax from Workout Earbuds Safely

The safest way to clean workout earbuds is model-specific: identify the exact earbuds, remove visible sweat with a dry or barely damp cloth, clean the speaker mesh only with the method the maker permits, keep liquid away from charging ports and contacts, and let every part dry completely before use or storage. Apple, Samsung, Sony and JBL give different instructions, especially about water and alcohol, so a method that is safe for one product can damage another.

Power the earbuds off or remove them from charging before cleaning. Take off removable ear tips only when the design allows it, and never push wax or dirt farther into the mesh.

Why workout-earbud cleaning instructions differ

Earbuds combine a delicate sound-output mesh, microphones, charging contacts, seals and—on some models—water-resistance features. Manufacturers therefore specify different liquids, tools and drying procedures. The same substance can be acceptable for one model and expressly prohibited for another.

Start with the support page for your exact make and model. The guidance below links the official pages used for the four examples; product families can contain exceptions, and a model’s own instructions take priority.

Manufacturer and covered guidance Speaker-mesh or ear-tip method Liquid and tool restrictions Charging and drying direction
Apple AirPods (specified models and parts) Use the model-specific mesh procedure; Apple names a Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit for certain mesh procedures. Do not place AirPods under running water. Avoid sharp objects and abrasive materials. Keep liquid out of charging ports. For the procedures on the page, dry completely for at least two hours before use or placing the AirPods in the case.
Samsung Galaxy Buds The support page covers the removable ear tip and speaker mesh. Do not hold the earbuds upright while cleaning. Do not use alcohol or soapy water on the earbuds; these can allow debris or liquid to fall inside. Dry charging contacts thoroughly whenever sweat or liquid is present. The page does not give a universal timed drying period.
Sony WF- and WI-series headphones Use a cloth dampened with water and wrung tightly on the sound-output mesh, taking care not to push debris inward. Sony’s general care guidance says not to use solvents such as alcohol on the covered products. Wipe sweat or moisture from charging ports and let the headphones dry at room temperature; no fixed duration is stated.
JBL Reflect Flow cleaning guide (the product covered by that guide) A clean cotton swab slightly moistened with alcohol is described for ear tips. Apply that alcohol instruction only if your exact JBL model is the one covered by the guide. The cited guide does not state a universal drying time; protect charging areas from moisture.

These differences are why a generic “wipe every earbud with alcohol” rule is unsafe. Check the current manufacturer page whenever you change models.

A safe cleaning routine after a sweaty workout

  1. Identify the model. Read the label in the companion app, Bluetooth settings, case, packaging or device documentation. Open the manufacturer’s care page for that exact model and note whether its tips are removable, what it permits on the mesh, and what it says about charging contacts.
  2. Disconnect and inspect. Stop playback, disconnect Bluetooth if practical, remove the earbuds from the charger and examine the mesh, ear tips, microphone openings and charging contacts under good light. Do not begin while either earbud is connected to a charging cable.
  3. Remove surface sweat first. Use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth on the housing. Blot rather than scrub so moisture is not driven toward a seam or opening. Apple specifically includes cleaning and drying after workouts for specified AirPods; Samsung likewise directs users to dry contacts when sweat or liquid is present.
  4. Separate removable tips only as designed. Pull silicone or foam tips off by the base, not by stretching the sound nozzle. If the maker does not describe washing or wetting a tip, do not improvise; wipe it with the approved method and keep the earbud itself dry.
  5. Clean the speaker mesh with the approved tool. Follow the model page exactly. A soft-bristled electronics brush may be suitable where the maker permits brushing. Sony’s covered guidance allows a tightly wrung, water-dampened cloth on the mesh. Samsung warns against alcohol and soapy water and says not to hold the earbud upright. Apple’s instructions vary by AirPods model and mesh, with a specialized kit mentioned for certain procedures.
  6. Lift away earwax; do not excavate it. Work from the outside of the mesh with light strokes or dabbing. Never insert a pin, needle, paperclip, knife, toothpick or other sharp object. Apple explicitly warns against sharp and abrasive cleaning materials, and forcing a tool inward can deform the mesh or push wax into the driver.
  7. Keep liquid out of electrical areas. Do not pour or spray cleaner onto an earbud. Shield charging ports, speaker openings, microphone holes and metal contacts from drops. Samsung requires thorough contact drying after sweat or liquid; Apple says not to get liquid in charging ports.
  8. Dry before reassembly. Place the separated parts on a clean, dry surface at room temperature with airflow. Do not put damp earbuds in the charging case, connect a charger, or wear them. Apple specifies at least two hours of complete drying for the procedures described on its support page; do not transfer that two-hour rule to another brand unless its own instructions say so.
  9. Reassemble and test gently. Once the parts are fully dry, reinstall tips evenly, check that no cloth fibers remain on the mesh, and play audio at low volume. Confirm that each earbud charges and that the case contacts are clean and dry before normal use.

Handling sweat and moisture safely

Wipe immediately, then allow hidden moisture to leave

Sweat can remain around a nozzle, seam or contact even when the outside looks dry. Wipe the housing and contacts as soon as practical after exercise, then leave the earbuds out of the case until dry. A case is a storage and charging enclosure, not a drying chamber: closing wet earbuds inside can keep moisture against contacts and openings.

Do not rely on a water-resistance rating as permission to rinse

A rating or workout-oriented design does not replace the care instructions for the exact product. Apple’s published instruction is explicit: “Don’t place your AirPods under running water – and don’t use sharp objects or abrasive materials to clean your AirPods.” Even when a product tolerates incidental sweat, running water can enter ports or seams with greater force than perspiration.

Dry contacts and ports separately

Use the maker-approved dry method on metal contacts and around the charging port. Samsung says to dry charging contacts thoroughly if sweat or liquid is present. Sony advises wiping sweat or moisture from charging ports and drying at room temperature. Keep the case open while it dries, and do not use a hair dryer, heater or other concentrated heat unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.

Removing earwax without damaging the mesh

Start with the ear tip, not the driver

Earwax commonly collects on the removable tip and the grille beneath it. If your model has a detachable tip, remove it and clean that part according to its support instructions before touching the grille. Hold the earbud so loosened debris falls away from openings, following the model’s orientation guidance; Samsung specifically says not to hold Galaxy Buds upright while cleaning.

Use only an approved wet method

There is no universal earbud solvent. Sony’s covered guidance permits a tightly wrung cloth dampened with water on the sound-output mesh and cautions against solvents such as alcohol. Samsung prohibits alcohol and soapy water on its earbuds. The JBL Reflect Flow guide cited above describes a cotton swab slightly moistened with alcohol for the ear tips of the product covered by that guide. Those instructions conflict, so never carry JBL’s alcohol step over to Samsung, Sony or an unconfirmed JBL model.

  • Slim silicone wiper grabs dirt from small, hard-to-reach places
  • Ideal for keyboards, computer screens, cell phones, camera lenses and more

Brush only when the model allows it

A soft-bristled electronics brush can lift loose particles from some meshes, and Apple and Samsung instructions support brush use in specified contexts. Use a clean, dry brush with almost no pressure and move debris outward. If the model page does not mention brushing, use the specified cloth or other method instead.

Stop when debris is embedded

If wax is packed behind the grille, the mesh is bent, or cleaning would require a sharp tool or force, stop. Repeated probing can push material into the driver and may damage the acoustic seal. Follow the manufacturer’s service route rather than escalating to stronger chemicals or tools.

Model-specific procedures

Apple AirPods

Apple’s How to clean your AirPods page separates procedures by AirPods model and by mesh. Use only the section that names your model. Do not place the earbuds under running water, use sharp or abrasive materials, or allow liquid into charging ports. The page includes cleaning and drying steps for certain AirPods after workouts and directs users to let the AirPods dry completely for at least two hours before use or returning them to the case. A Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit is mentioned only for certain mesh procedures; treat that as a model-specific option, not a universal accessory.

  • Wide variety of brushes, different bristles hardness & sizes for different tasks all the time.
  • The round handle brushes clean those finer detail, made for hard-to-reach places such as CPU fan, controller, camera, sewing machine
  • The flat handle brush is used for cleaning PCB, circuit boards and electronic components. The crank brush is good for some heavy-duty scrubbing such as grout
  • Note: The yellow bristles brush and scraper brush are not anti-static, the scraper brush can clean some extremely difficult stains, shaver head, and car air vent
  • This computer cleaning kit gets rid of the dust bunnies and crumbs on your keyboard, goes well with an air blower or compressed air or power duster

Samsung Galaxy Buds

Samsung’s Galaxy earbuds cleaning guide addresses both the ear tip and speaker mesh. Remove and handle parts as shown for your model, keep the earbud from being held upright during cleaning, and do not use alcohol or soapy water. Samsung’s wording is direct: “When cleaning the earbuds, do not hold the earbuds upright, and do not use liquids like alcohol or soapy water when cleaning them to prevent debris or liquids from falling inside them.” Dry the charging contacts thoroughly whenever sweat or liquid is present, and wait until the earbuds and case are dry before charging.

Sony WF- and WI-series headphones

Sony’s care guidance covers the WF- and WI-series products named in its page. It says: “With a cloth dampened with water and wrung tightly, clean the mesh of the earbuds (the parts where sound comes out) to remove dirt, earwax, or anything that may accumulated, being careful not to accidentally push dirt or debris into the earbuds.” The same guidance says not to use solvents such as alcohol on the covered products, to wipe sweat or moisture from charging ports, and to let the headphones dry at room temperature. Confirm the product-specific page before applying the method to another Sony series.

JBL Reflect Flow

The JBL Reflect Flow cleaning guide describes a clean cotton swab slightly moistened with alcohol for ear tips. Because the cited page is product-specific, verify that your earbuds are the covered Reflect Flow model before using alcohol. Keep the swab damp—not dripping—and prevent liquid from reaching the driver, contacts or port. If your JBL model has a different guide, follow that guide instead.

Tools: what to use and what to avoid

  • Usually useful: a clean lint-free cloth; a dry, soft-bristled electronics brush when the manufacturer permits brushing; and cotton swabs only where the exact model’s instructions allow them.
  • Use conditionally: a tightly wrung water-dampened cloth for Sony products covered by its guidance, or a slightly alcohol-moistened cotton swab for the JBL Reflect Flow guide. These are not interchangeable recommendations.
  • Avoid: sharp objects, abrasive materials, sprays, soaking, running water, and any solvent or soap that the model page does not expressly approve. Samsung prohibits alcohol and soapy water; Sony cautions against solvents such as alcohol; Apple prohibits running water and sharp or abrasive tools.

What to do when something goes wrong

The earbuds got wet

Remove them from the case or charger, wipe the exterior and contacts with the approved dry method, leave them open at room temperature, and do not test or charge them while damp. Use the manufacturer’s stated drying period where one exists. If charging, sound or controls remain abnormal after complete drying, stop using the affected earbud and consult the maker’s support or service instructions.

Sound is still muffled after cleaning

Check that the tip is seated correctly and that the mesh is not covered by a fiber or displaced wax. Do not increase pressure or insert a tool to reach deeper debris. Repeat only the approved external method once the earbud is dry; persistent blockage or a damaged grille needs manufacturer service.

The earbud will not charge

Inspect the case and earbud contacts for moisture or visible residue, then let both dry fully. Do not scrape contacts with a sharp object or apply liquid into the charging port. If the charging fault continues after drying and a careful approved wipe, use the model’s support channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot identify the model

Do not choose a cleaning liquid by appearance or by the brand name alone. Find the model number in Bluetooth settings, the companion app, the case or its documentation. Until confirmed, use only a dry exterior wipe and keep liquid away from every opening and contact.

A final pre-storage checklist

  • The exact model’s care instructions were checked.
  • Ear tips were removed only if designed to come off.
  • Sweat and loose wax were lifted outward without forcing debris inward.
  • No unapproved alcohol, soap, solvent, spray or running water was used.
  • Charging ports and contacts are visibly dry.
  • The earbuds, tips and case have dried completely for the period the maker specifies.
  • The earbuds charge and play normally at low volume before a workout.
