A plush should be cleaned according to its sewn label, with the least moisture and agitation that will remove the soil. A PVC figure should normally be kept dry, dusted with a soft brush or cloth, and displayed away from sunlight, heat, humidity, and fabric that can transfer dye. Never machine-wash, soak, heat, or bend a collectible unless its own instructions explicitly allow it.
Identify what your Miku collectible is made of
Care starts with construction, not the character design. Official Hatsune Miku products include stuffed toys with different textile blends and painted plastic figures with delicate, detachable parts. Good Smile Company lists representative Miku plush products made from polyester and from cotton/polyester. Its cited Max Factory Miku is a completely painted PVC figure, 1/7 scale and approximately 220 mm tall. A cleaning method that is reasonable for one material can permanently damage the other.

Also check for electronics, glued accessories, printed markings, sequins, ribbons, or dark cloth touching painted plastic. Those features increase the chance that moisture, friction, or heat will cause damage. Keep the product manual with the item; its instructions override general advice.
Prepare before cleaning
- Read the sewn care label and any product-specific instructions. Schylling’s plush-care guidance notes that some toys are surface-clean only and should not be machine-washed or dry-cleaned unless the instructions expressly permit it.
- Photograph the figure or plush before disassembly so every detachable part and accessory returns to its original position.
- Remove detachable figure parts only as the manual shows. If a part resists, stop rather than twisting it.
- Work on a clean, dry surface away from food, drinks, pets, and open windows that could blow grit onto wet fabric or freshly dusted paint.
- Have a soft brush, a clean soft or microfiber cloth, clean water, absorbent towels, and a ventilated drying area ready. Use separate cloths for dusty plastic and spot-cleaning fabric.
- Test any damp treatment on a hidden fabric area first. A concealed seam or underside can reveal dye bleeding or finish changes before the visible surface is affected.
Safest way to clean a Hatsune Miku plush
1. Follow the label’s washing permission
The label is the deciding factor. “Surface clean only” means do not immerse the plush. Machine washing and tumble drying add heat, water movement, and mechanical force that can damage stitching, alter the shape of the filling, loosen labels, and break attached parts. Do not infer washability from size or from another Miku plush made by the same company; textile composition and construction can differ.

2. Remove loose dust without disturbing the pile
Use a soft clothing or plush brush, or gentle low-pressure air, to lift surface dust. Brush in the direction of the pile with short, light passes. Keep strong air blasts away from seams, embroidery, hair-like fibers, and small decorations. High pressure can drive grit into the fabric or pull an attachment loose.
3. Spot-clean a small mark
- Test a hidden area with a clean, soft cloth that is barely damp, not wet.
- Dab the mark with lifting motions. Do not scrub, twist the fabric, or pull the pile.
- Use a second cloth lightly dampened with clean water to lift cleaning residue.
- Blot with a dry towel and leave the plush in moving air away from direct sunlight and heat.
Do not use bleach, solvents, steamers, irons, hot hair dryers, or harsh stain removers unless the specific product instructions explicitly authorize them. Heat can set a stain, flatten the pile, distort synthetic fibers, and stress glue or stitching. Solvents and bleach can remove printed color as well as the mark.
4. Hand-wash only when the label allows it
If hand washing is permitted, use cool water and gentle pressing or lifting motions. Avoid rubbing the face, embroidered features, hair details, and clothing. Kao’s plush-care guidance recommends short, low-force extraction followed by reshaping rather than prolonged soaking or vigorous agitation. Keep any electronics, sound modules, or parts identified as non-washable completely dry.

5. Remove water without wringing
Press the plush between clean towels to draw out water. Never wring or twist it: torsion can stretch the shell, shift the filling, and stress seams. Reshape the head, limbs, clothing, and ears while the fabric is still damp, then place the toy in a ventilated area. Turn it periodically so the interior dries as well as the surface. Do not put it in a sealed box or container until it is completely dry.
6. Restore the pile after full drying
When no cool or damp areas remain, use a soft plush or clothing brush to lift flattened fibers. Brush gently around embroidery and attached decorations. If a patch remains after the fabric is dry, repeat only the label-approved spot treatment; escalating to stronger chemicals or heat risks making the damage permanent.
Protect plush hair, colors, and attached details
Hatsune Miku plush often combine a fabric body with contrasting hair, clothing, embroidery, ribbons, or printed details. Treat each color boundary as a potential dye-transfer area. Use very little water, keep the cloth moving rather than pressing a saturated spot into adjacent colors, and stop if color appears on the cloth. Do not assume that a “color-safe” household product is safe for a particular plush; the sewn label and a hidden-area test are more reliable.

Store a cleaned plush only after it is fully dry inside and out. A dry, ventilated shelf is safer than a damp, airtight container. If a box is necessary, avoid compressing the toy under heavy items and inspect it periodically for odor, moisture, pests, or renewed staining. Keep it away from direct sun, radiators, heat-producing appliances, and areas where cooking vapor or cigarette smoke can settle on the fibers.

Dry dusting is the normal method
For routine care, use a soft dry brush or soft microfiber cloth. Work from upper surfaces downward so loosened dust does not settle on areas already cleaned. Support thin appendages, hair spikes, weapons, ribbons, and other projecting parts with your free hand. Do not force a cloth into a gap if the pressure bends a part or catches an edge.
For a figure with multiple components, remove only the detachable parts identified by the manual. Clean each piece separately on a padded surface, then reinstall it by aligning the intended joint. Bending a part against resistance can whiten or fracture PVC and can damage paint at the joint.

When a damp cloth is justified
A barely damp cloth can lift a small, localized deposit from an area with no exposed decal, seam, or electrical feature, but dry dusting is safer. Use clean water only, keep moisture away from joints and cavities, and dry the part immediately with a second soft cloth. Do not immerse a painted figure, use abrasive pads, or apply alcohol, solvent, bleach, polish, or an unapproved clear coat. Household cleaners may soften paint, leave a film, or react with plasticizer.
Handle for inspection, not force
Pick up a figure by its strongest central body or base, not by hair, fingers, antennae, ribbons, or weapons. If a part is loose, set the figure down and consult its manual rather than improvising glue. Keep spare hands, faces, stands, and other accessories in labeled bags so they do not rub against painted surfaces or disappear during cleaning.
Prevent fading, tackiness, and paint transfer
Control light and heat
Good Smile Company advises a well-ventilated location away from direct sunlight and warns that strong fluorescent light can fade colors. Its figure checklist also warns that figures can deteriorate rapidly in hot and humid environments. Keep display shelves away from radiators, heat vents, cooking appliances, sunny windows, and equipment that exhausts warm air. Do not leave a boxed figure in a hot car, attic, or damp basement.

Airflow is preferable to an airtight, humid enclosure. A ventilated, UV-filtering acrylic display case can reduce dust and light exposure, but it still needs a reasonably dry room and occasional opening or inspection. A sealed case does not correct heat or humidity trapped inside.
Stop dark fabric from staining PVC
Good Smile Company says dark fabric outfits can transfer color to PVC during long contact, especially when friction, high temperature, or humidity is present. This can affect sleeves, skirts, ribbons, capes, and other cloth parts touching painted plastic.
- Inspect every fabric-to-PVC contact point when you dust the figure.
- Reduce heat and humidity around a dressed figure.
- Insert a piece of vinyl between the cloth and painted plastic, following Good Smile Company’s recommendation, or store the cloth parts separately.
- Do not rely on a clear coat unless the figure maker specifically documents that treatment as compatible with the product.
Keep detachable PVC parts from pressing against one another for long periods. Prolonged contact can cause color transfer, particularly when the parts are warm or under pressure.

Plush storage
- Clean and dry the plush completely before packing it.
- Use a clean, dry box or breathable protective covering; do not trap residual moisture in a sealed plastic bag.
- Do not compress the toy under books or other collectibles. Compression can permanently flatten the pile and deform the filling.
- Keep labels, original accessories, and product paperwork with the plush without allowing paper or ink to rub against damp fabric.
- Inspect periodically for odor, tackiness, discoloration, insects, or moisture. If any appears, isolate the item and allow it to air in a clean, dry area before deciding on further cleaning.
Figure storage
- Keep the original box, molded tray, spare parts, stand, and manual together. The tray is shaped to support the figure and reduces movement during relocation.
- Store the packed figure in a dry, moderate environment away from heat sources and strong light.
- Do not leave a figure permanently sealed and forgotten. Good Smile Company recommends taking boxed or container-stored figures out regularly for inspection.
- Store dark fabric accessories separately or with a vinyl separator where they would otherwise touch painted PVC.
- Place detachable parts in labeled bags, cushioned so they cannot rub against painted surfaces. Avoid stacking heavy boxes on top of a figure’s box.
Storage is not a substitute for inspection. Look for tackiness, color transfer, warped parts, loose joints, odor, moisture, and signs that foam, paper, or fabric packaging is degrading. Address a problem while it is localized rather than returning the item to long-term storage.

How often should you inspect and clean?
No authoritative controlled statistic establishes a universal cleaning interval, lifespan, or failure rate for Miku plush or figures. Use condition rather than a calendar as the trigger: dust when visible, spot-clean a mark promptly with the label-approved method, and inspect stored or boxed items periodically. Increase inspection after moving a collection, changing its display location, or exposing it to unusual heat or humidity. A short, gentle maintenance session is safer than waiting until grime requires aggressive treatment.
