Clean a magnetic vehicle sign and the paint panel beneath it with water and mild detergent, then dry both completely before reinstalling. Remove the sign before washing the vehicle and check it regularly for trapped dirt or moisture. For storage, keep it clean, dry, flat and away from heat and direct sunlight; follow the sign maker’s instructions if they differ.
How to clean a magnetic vehicle sign safely
- Lift it off the vehicle. Remove the sign by its edges rather than dragging it across the paint, which can stretch the sign or damage its corners. Signs.com’s maintenance guide recommends lifting it carefully.
- Clean both surfaces. Wipe the sign’s front and magnetic side, as well as the vehicle panel it covered, with a soft cloth or sponge. Use water and mild detergent if needed; a microfiber cloth is optional. Signs.com says specialty cleaning products are unnecessary. Its care instructions and product FAQ recommend gentle cleaning.
- Rinse residue and dry completely. Do not immerse the sign. Let it air-dry or gently dry it with a soft towel before putting it back. Dust, grit or moisture caught between the sign and paint can cause problems, so make sure both surfaces are clean and dry before reinstalling. FASTSIGNS’ care guidance also advises gentle cleaning and drying.
Take the sign off before an automated or manual car wash and before using a power washer. Do not steam-clean it. These cleaning restrictions are recommended by Signs.com and FASTSIGNS.

How often to remove and inspect the sign
Care instructions vary by provider: Signs.com’s maintenance article recommends frequent removal and says daily removal supports maximum longevity; its installation and maintenance guide advises wiping the sign several times a week; Signs & More recommends weekly removal. Follow the instructions supplied with your sign. As a cautious routine, check and clean it more often after rain, snow or dirty-road driving, when moisture or grit may be trapped underneath.
Whenever you remove it, inspect the sign and the covered paint for dirt, moisture or visible changes. FASTSIGNS UK advises weekly checks for discoloration or clear-coat clouding. Finish condition and use vary, so do not assume every vehicle’s paint will respond the same way.

How to store a magnetic sign between uses
- Store it clean and fully dry on a flat, level surface, preferably in a cool or room-temperature place away from direct sun and heat. Do not leave it in a hot vehicle.
- Never fold or crease the sign. Flat storage is the clearest shared recommendation, but instructions about rolling differ: Signs & More permits gentle rolling, while Signs.com’s guidance favors flat storage. Check your sign maker’s directions rather than treating rolling as universally safe.
- Keep it from being crushed or abraded. If it rests against another surface, Signs.com suggests nonabrasive fabric between surfaces; do not place heavy objects on top.
Choose a compatible panel and protect the paint
Attach the sign only to a flat, smooth, magnetic metal area. Avoid curved panels, protrusions, moldings, trim and nonmagnetic materials such as aluminum or fiberglass. A refrigerator magnet can help check whether a panel is magnetic, but use the sign maker’s installation directions to confirm placement.
Do not apply a magnetic sign to fresh paint until the paint has cured. Cure timing depends on the paint and vehicle: Signs.com’s 2024 guide estimates 30–90 days for a new vehicle paint job to harden and cure, while Signs & More recommends waiting at least 90 days. These are vendor recommendations, not a universal rule. Verify the appropriate wait with your vehicle or sign maker.
