Clean small wireless earbuds and their charging case with gentle, model-approved tools: remove loose debris with a soft, dry brush or cloth where the manufacturer allows, keep liquid out of openings and charging ports, and let everything dry fully before use or charging. Cleaning instructions differ by model, so identify the exact earbuds before using any liquid or specialized method.
Before you start: identify the exact model
Use the care page for your specific earbuds, not just the brand. Apple’s mesh-cleaning method applies only to specified AirPods meshes; Samsung’s micellar-water instructions are limited to Galaxy Buds4; and Sony’s directions below are for WF-1000XM4. A method permitted for one model may damage another.

- Check the model name in the device’s settings, its companion app, or the product packaging.
- Look up that model’s manufacturer cleaning instructions before using liquid, removing an ear tip, or cleaning a mesh or port.
- Work gently. Avoid sharp objects, excessive force, and metal or wire brushes, which can damage mesh and openings.
Clean the earbuds and case safely
1. Remove loose debris using an approved dry tool
Where the manufacturer permits it, use a soft, dry cloth, soft-bristled brush, or cotton swab. Keep the tool clean and avoid pushing debris farther into a mesh, microphone opening, sound outlet, or charging port. Do not use compressed air unless the model’s instructions specifically allow it; Sony warns it can drive debris into openings on the WF-1000XM4.
2. Use liquid only when the model’s instructions say to
Do not assume earbuds are waterproof because they are wireless or because another model tolerates a damp cloth. Keep liquid away from openings and charging ports, and never apply it directly to the earbuds. Apple permits a slightly water-dampened cloth on the AirPods body in specified circumstances and provides a separate micellar-water procedure for designated meshes. Samsung’s Galaxy Buds4 article has a model-specific micellar-water method, while its general Galaxy Buds guidance warns against liquids such as alcohol or soapy water.

3. Clean the charging case and contacts with care
Use only the dry brush, cloth, or cotton swab specified for your model. Do not insert anything into a charging port unless the manufacturer explicitly instructs you to: Apple specifically warns that doing so can damage the metal contacts. Keep moisture out of case openings and contact areas.
4. Let the parts dry completely
Do not put damp earbuds in the case or charge them. Follow the drying time in your model’s instructions. Apple specifies at least two hours after its designated AirPods mesh or body-cleaning procedures; Samsung says to let Galaxy Buds4 dry completely; Sony says to dry WF-1000XM4 earbuds at room temperature before returning them to the case.

Apple AirPods
Apple says, “Regular cleaning can help maintain your AirPods.” Its detailed mesh procedure is limited to designated AirPods 3, 4, and 5 meshes; do not extend it to other areas or models without checking the matching instructions. Apple names the Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit or a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush, micellar water containing PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, distilled water, two small cups, and a paper towel for that procedure.

For the AirPods body, Apple says to wipe with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water after exposure to the listed staining substances, then dry with a soft, lint-free cloth and wait at least two hours. Do not hold AirPods under running water or use sharp or abrasive materials. For the case, remove port debris with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush; do not put anything into the charging ports. Wipe the case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If necessary, Apple permits slightly dampening that cloth with isopropyl alcohol, while keeping liquid out of the ports. Apple’s AirPods cleaning instructions give the full model-specific procedure.
Samsung Galaxy Buds
Samsung’s micellar-water procedure is specifically for Galaxy Buds4. Its article says to put only a small amount on a brush or cloth so it is slightly damp, not dripping; do not apply liquid directly. Samsung cautions against alcohol, organic solvents such as acetone, other chemicals, sharp objects, and excessive force. Remove moisture and let the earbuds dry completely. Do not transfer this method to other Galaxy Buds or electronics.

Samsung’s broader guidance for several Galaxy Buds models instead describes dry cleaning: remove tips carefully where applicable, use a cotton swab and dry brush, wipe mesh with a soft, dry cloth, and clean contacts and sensors with a cotton swab. It warns against liquids such as alcohol or soapy water and against metal or wire brushes. If contacts get wet, dry them thoroughly to help prevent corrosion. Sony WF-1000XM4
Sony says dust or earwax buildup can make volume seem lower or affect charging. For the WF-1000XM4, it recommends a soft, dry cloth or cotton swab and warns against compressed air. Do not wash the tips in water or clean them with a wet wipe. Sony’s instructions describe slightly dampening a cloth for the sound outlet holes, then holding the openings downward to drain and drying the earbuds at room temperature before placing them in the case.

The WF-1000XM4 charging case is not water resistant. Moisture left on the earbuds can enter the case and cause malfunction or corrosion. Clean its contacts with a dry, soft cloth or cotton swab.
