Before entering PvP, check the exact death rules for your game and mode. Separate persistent account progress from what your character is carrying, move valuables to the game’s documented safe storage if available, and take only gear you can afford to lose. Storage, recovery, and logout rules differ between games—and sometimes between modes in the same game.
Start with the death rule for your game and mode
Find out what happens specifically when you die to another player. The rule may affect carried equipment, inventory, stored items, experience, account progression, or several of these. Do not assume that a rule from another game—or even another mode in the same game—applies to your character.

Check the game’s current official rules or support pages for the mode you are about to play. Confirm whether the rule covers PvP death, other types of death, failed extraction, and recovery. Event and hardcore modes deserve particular attention because their consequences can be substantially different.
Sort progress from loot at risk
Before a run, classify what matters into three groups: persistent progress, items the game says can be stored safely, and items exposed while carried. Some games preserve account-linked progression while leaving ordinary gear on your body. For example, the Escape from DayZ guide to death, logout, and combat logging distinguishes account-linked reputation, trader access, tasks, stash, base, and skills from carried gear. That is an example for that game, not a general rule.

Write down what you would lose on death and what, if anything, you could recover. If the rules do not clearly say an item is protected in the situation you expect, treat it as exposed until you verify otherwise.
Use only storage the game documents as safe
Protection systems are game-specific. Decimated Support says looted or scavenged inventory items are at risk until protected through its vault system. Star Citizen Support says items safely stored in a landing zone are retained after death; its rule states, “Items lost will be only what you were carrying at the time of death and anything safely stored in a landing zone will be retained.” Neither example establishes how storage works in another game.

Check the storage system’s limits before relying on it: which item categories it covers, whether the protection applies to PvP death, any capacity or access restrictions, and whether it is active in your selected mode and current version. Do not assume that a bank, vault, container, insurance feature, or stash protects everything.
Prepare a PvP loadout around acceptable loss
- Move protected valuables out of your carried inventory. Use only a storage location the game documents as safe for your mode.
- Verify your kit. Check the equipment and consumables you are actually taking, including valuable items that may have been left in inventory by mistake.
- Set a loss limit. Decide what you are willing to lose before the encounter, then reduce the kit if its value exceeds that limit.
- Confirm how to leave or recover. Learn the actual extraction, safe-exit, and recovery mechanics before entering the risky area.
Do not assume logging out makes you safe
Logout behavior also depends on the game. The Escape from DayZ guide says a character’s body remains in the world after logout, with a longer period after combat. In a game with that rule, logging out during danger can leave carried gear exposed. Check the applicable game guidance and use its intended safe exit or extraction process instead.

Account security is a separate layer
Account-protection tools can prevent other people from accessing stored wealth, but they do not necessarily protect items from in-game death. Jagex describes its Bank PIN as protection for stored wealth against account hijackers; that is account security, not evidence that carried items survive PvP death.

Jagex’s 2021 Old School RuneScape Deadman: Reborn announcement described event rules in which PvP death cost a life and carried items, with further bank losses under specified conditions. Those are historical rules for that event, not a guide to current rules in other RuneScape modes.

Jagex’s Ironman Mode page also describes Hardcore Ironman as a mode where death in a non-safe activity can make an account unplayable. That consequence belongs to the mode described, not to PvP games generally. Before risking a valuable character or account, confirm the current mode rules directly rather than relying on advice for a different version or event.
