Rinse polarized sunglasses with lukewarm water before touching or wiping the lenses. If smudges remain, gently wash them with a little mild, lotion-free soap, rinse thoroughly, then dry with a clean, soft microfiber or eyewear cloth. Removing grit before wiping is the key step: dry-wiping dust or sand can drag particles across the lens and scratch it.
Clean polarized sunglasses safely, step by step
- Wash your hands and inspect the lenses. If you see dust, sand, or other loose grit, do not wipe it away while the lens is dry. Rinse the particles off first; Costa warns that dry-wiping residue can grind it into the surface. Costa’s care instructions
- Rinse with lukewarm, clean water. Let the water carry off loose debris before you touch the lenses. Avoid hot water, and do not leave polarized lenses soaking.
- Use mild soap only if needed. For fingerprints, sunscreen, or oily grime that water does not remove, gently wash the lenses and frame with a small amount of mild, lotion-free soap. Nike suggests a dab of mild dish soap. Nike’s sunglasses-cleaning guidance
- Rinse thoroughly. Wash away all soap so no residue remains on the lens or frame. Costa and SWANS both include thorough rinsing in their care guidance.
- Dry with a clean, soft eyewear cloth. Use microfiber or another cloth made for glasses. POC warns that paper, towels, and clothing can scratch lenses. POC’s eyewear and lens care instructions
- Store the glasses in their case. A protective case helps keep the lenses away from grit between uses. Follow the instructions for your particular model if they differ from these general steps.
What can scratch or damage the lenses
- Dry-wiping dusty or sandy lenses: grit can be dragged over the lens surface. Rinse first. Costa
- Paper towels, tissues, and clothing: these are not substitutes for a clean lens cloth; POC cautions that paper, towels, or clothing can scratch lenses. POC
- Dirty or linty cloths: particles or lint on a cloth can transfer to the lens. Nike advises replacing a cloth when it becomes linty or dirty; Maui Jim recommends laundering its cleaning cloth frequently and avoiding fabric softener. Nike · Maui Jim’s care guidance
- Harsh cleaners and solvents: Costa warns that acetone, glass cleaner, rubbing alcohol, and vinegar may damage or degrade lenses, coatings, or frames. POC also advises against strong cleaning fluids, solvents, and alcohol. Costa · POC
- Long soaking and ultrasonic cleaning: SWANS cautions that polarized film is delicate and advises against leaving polarized lenses in water for a long time or cleaning them in an ultrasonic washer. Rinse and dry promptly instead. SWANS maintenance guidance
Keep the cleaning cloth clean
A microfiber cloth is useful only when it is free of grit and oil. Wash or replace it when it looks dirty, feels greasy, or starts leaving lint. If you wash a Maui Jim cleaning cloth, its care guidance says not to use fabric softener. Store the cloth where it will not collect dust, rather than loose in a bag or pocket with debris.

When the general method is not enough
Lens materials, coatings, and frame finishes vary, so the sunglasses maker’s instructions for your model take priority if they conflict with general advice. In particular, use a separate lens cleaner only if its label or the manufacturer confirms it is suitable for your lenses and coatings. A simple rinse and gentle soap wash is supported in the cited manufacturer guidance; special cleaners are optional, not required.
