What you need—and what to leave aside
A safe cleaning setup is deliberately simple. Gather a soft, dry microfiber cloth and a low-powered handheld vacuum with a soft brush or narrow nozzle. The vacuum should work dry, provide controllable suction, and let you reach vent areas without pushing hard against the console.

Keep the console on a stable, dry surface while you work. Have enough room to set the covers aside without dropping or bending them. You do not need to open the power supply or perform deep internal disassembly for the cleaning Sony describes.
Why the shutdown and cooling steps matter
Dusting is not a reason to leave the PS5 in Rest Mode. Sony’s PlayStation Support instruction says: “For safety reasons, always disconnect the PS5 consoles’ AC power cable from the rear of the system before cleaning.” A complete shutdown and physical disconnection remove power before a cloth, brush or vacuum is brought near openings.

The console can remain hot immediately after use. Sony’s safety guidance says to turn it off, unplug the AC cord and other cables, and wait for it to cool before removing covers. Cooling is therefore a prerequisite for any under-cover cleaning, not an optional comfort step.
Safe cleaning procedure
1. Shut the PS5 down completely
- Save or close anything running.
- Use the PS5’s normal power-off command rather than beginning while a game or app is active.
- Wait until the console has fully stopped operating.
- Disconnect the AC power cable from the rear of the PS5. Disconnect other cables if they will get in your way while you clean.
Do not clean a powered or sleeping console. Keep the AC cable disconnected for the entire cleaning session.
2. Let the console cool
Leave the unplugged PS5 undisturbed until its exterior is cool to the touch. If it was running a demanding game, streaming for a long period or sitting in a warm room, allow more time rather than removing a cover while it is still hot. Sony specifically pairs shutdown, unplugging and cooling with cover removal in its safety guidance.

- Use a clean, soft, dry cloth.
- Wipe the visible plastic panels and other accessible exterior surfaces with light passes.
- Keep the cloth dry; do not spray the console or put liquid on the panels.
Sony warns against insecticides, volatile substances, paint thinner, benzene, alcohol and chemically treated cloths. Those products can damage the finish or leave residue. If a mark does not come away with a dry cloth, do not escalate to a household solvent as part of this dust-cleaning routine.
4. Vacuum the vents with low power
Sony’s PlayStation Support guidance is explicit: “Use a low-powered vacuum cleaner to remove any dust that has accumulated in and around the air vents.” Fit a soft brush or a narrow, smooth nozzle, select the lowest setting that lifts the dust, and work around the vent openings.

- Keep the movement slow enough to see where dust is being removed.
- Use an attachment that you can control without pressing hard against the plastic.
- Keep the operation dry; do not combine suction with a damp cloth or cleaning spray.
- If a nozzle cannot be positioned gently, change the attachment rather than forcing it into a vent.
This is the point at which a low-powered handheld vacuum is the appropriate tool. A full-size vacuum can be harder to control around a compact console, so its use is only sensible if it can be operated at low power with a gentle attachment.
5. Clean beneath the covers only when necessary
If dust remains around the air path or is visible beneath the removable covers, you can remove the covers after the PS5 is cool and unplugged. Sony’s safety information says not to use the console without its cover, so treat cover removal as a temporary cleaning step.
- Confirm again that the PS5 is off, unplugged and cool.
- Remove the covers according to the instructions for your PS5 model. Do not pry, twist or force a panel; if it does not release as described in the model’s documentation, stop.
- Set each cover on a clean, dry surface.
- Use the handheld vacuum to lift dust trapped underneath and around the accessible vent areas. Keep suction low and the attachment gentle.
- Inspect the covers and the exposed, accessible surfaces for remaining loose dust.
- Refit every cover securely before reconnecting power or using the console.
The recessed areas underneath the covers are what many owners mean when they ask about cleaning the PS5’s “dust catchers.” They are reachable during this limited cover-off procedure; deep internal disassembly is not part of Sony’s cited cleaning method.
6. Reassemble and reconnect
Check that the covers are fully seated and that no cloth, brush or vacuum attachment has been left near the console. Reconnect the AC cable only after the covers are back in place. Reconnect the remaining cables, restore the console to its normal position and confirm that its vents are not blocked.
Can you vacuum PS5 vents?
Yes. Low-powered vacuuming is the method Sony names for dust in and around the air vents. The important qualification is power and control: use low suction, a soft or smooth attachment, and a position that does not require hard contact with the console.

Vacuuming is not a license to push a large nozzle into an opening or to dismantle the console. If dust is not reachable with a gentle, controlled pass, stop at the accessible area and use the cover-off procedure only when the console is cool and unplugged.
Should you use compressed air?
Sony’s cited cleaning instructions do not call for compressed air. They specify a dry cloth for exterior surfaces and a low-powered vacuum for vents and dust beneath covers. Because the official procedure does not establish compressed air as necessary, it should not replace the recommended suction method in this guide.
Do not improvise by spraying any product into the vents. The same caution applies to canned cleaners, liquids and chemical treatments: the exterior guidance is dry wiping, and the vent guidance is low-powered suction.
How to choose a suitable vacuum attachment
When selecting or borrowing a vacuum, evaluate the tool rather than its marketing name. The useful characteristics are:
- Low, controllable suction: You should be able to use the lowest effective setting instead of applying maximum power.
- A soft brush or gentle nozzle: The attachment should not scratch the plastic or require force to stay in position.
- Reach into narrow vent areas: A slim attachment can access dust around openings without pushing the hose against the console.
- Dry operation: Keep moisture and cleaning fluid away from the vents and panels.
- Easy handling: Choose a size and shape you can guide with one hand while seeing the area being cleaned.
A soft, dry microfiber cloth is the companion tool for the exterior. It is not a substitute for suction where dust is sitting inside a vent path, and a vacuum is not a reason to scrub the panels with a rough brush.

Airflow setup that reduces dust problems
Cleaning removes accumulated dust, but placement determines how quickly the air path becomes obstructed again. Sony’s PlayStation Blog FAQ gives an operational clearance of at least 10 cm (4 inches) from a wall. Measure from the console to the nearest wall or other large obstruction rather than assuming a narrow gap is sufficient.
- Keep the side and rear vents unobstructed.
- Do not push the PS5 into a cramped shelf or tightly enclosed compartment.
- Avoid long-fiber carpets that can block or surround the airflow path.
- Do not cover the console with cloth while it is operating or cooling.
- Leave the specified 10 cm (4 inches) of wall clearance.
The 10 cm figure is ventilation guidance from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2020 FAQ, not a laboratory measurement promising a particular temperature or performance improvement. Treat it as the minimum placement clearance stated in that guidance.

If dust is still visible after cleaning
Dust remains around an exterior vent
Power the PS5 down again if it has been turned on, disconnect the AC cable and use the low-powered vacuum with a better-controlled attachment. A dry cloth can remove dust on the surrounding plastic, but do not push the cloth into the vent.
Dust is visible beneath a cover
Repeat the cool, unplugged cover-off procedure. Vacuum the accessible area with low suction, then refit the cover completely. If a panel will not release or reseat without force, stop rather than escalating to prying or deeper disassembly.

The console is in a tight or carpeted location
Move it to a placement with clear side and rear vents, no long-fiber carpet around the airflow path and at least 10 cm (4 inches) from a wall. Correcting the placement is part of cleaning because it limits new dust buildup and preserves the intended airflow path.

You used an unsuitable product
If you have sprayed liquid, solvent or a chemically treated cloth on the console, do not add more product to “neutralize” it. Disconnect power if it is connected, allow the exterior to dry completely and avoid powering the PS5 until you are confident no moisture is present. Sony’s published guidance is to avoid those substances; persistent damage or a console that will not operate requires qualified service rather than more home cleaning.
How often should you clean a PS5?
Sony’s cited material establishes how to clean the console and how to place it for airflow, but it does not prescribe a universal calendar interval. Inspect the vents and surrounding surfaces periodically, especially when the console is in a dusty room, near a carpet or in a cramped area. Clean when you can see accumulation or when the airflow path is becoming obstructed, using the shutdown, unplugging and cooling sequence every time.
A short exterior wipe can be done whenever dust is visible. Cover removal should remain an occasional, targeted step for dust that is actually trapped underneath, not a routine reason to open the console more often than needed.

When to stop cleaning yourself
Stop if a cover, attachment or fastener will not move with the normal, model-appropriate motion; if you would need to remove internal components; or if the console has liquid contamination, physical damage or an operating fault after cleaning. Sony’s guidance supports accessible dry wiping and low-powered suction, not deep internal repair. In those situations, use the manufacturer’s service route or a qualified technician rather than extending the cleaning session with force or chemicals.
