Identify every material—resin, plastic, foam, paint, metal, rubber, leather, fabric, electronics and adhesives—before introducing moisture or chemicals. Start with dry dust removal, test any method in a hidden area, and stop at the first sign of softening, color transfer or loosening. For storage, use weight-rated supports, inert contact materials, protection from light and dust, and a stable indoor environment.
Identify the replica’s materials and condition first
A prop can combine rigid shells, cast resin, flexible foam, painted details, metal hardware, rubber hoses, leather straps, fabric, decals and electronic assemblies. Each reacts differently to water, solvents, pressure and heat. Treat an unfamiliar coating as vulnerable until a conservator identifies it.

Make a condition record
- Photograph the entire replica from several sides before moving or cleaning it. Include close-ups of joints, decals, wiring, seams, handles and support points.
- Write down loose parts, existing cracks, flaking or lifting paint, corrosion, sticky areas, cloudy coatings, dents and missing fasteners. Mark where each detachable component belongs.
- Note electronic openings, switches, battery compartments, speakers, vents and cable connections. These areas must remain dry and free of sprayed products.
This record distinguishes old damage from damage that occurs during handling and gives a conservator useful evidence if a coating or adhesive later fails.

Wear powder-free nitrile gloves whenever you touch exposed metal or metal-plated parts. Royal Armouries explains that “The chemicals in the sweat on our hands can leave etched fingerprints on metal that are hard to remove.” Change gloves if they become dirty, and support the prop with both hands rather than gripping a fragile fitting.

Dry-clean the surface before considering water
Dry cleaning removes ordinary dust while imposing the least chemical and mechanical stress. Work from the highest surfaces downward and keep detachable pieces supported so vibration does not load a weak joint.
Tools that are appropriate for first-pass dusting
- A clean, very soft brush for recesses, vents and textured surfaces.
- A clean lint-free cloth for broad, smooth areas.
- A low-suction vacuum held near—but never against—the replica. Keep the nozzle far enough away that it cannot strike, drag or snag the surface; a soft brush attachment can direct dust toward the airflow.
The Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) recommends careful brushing, vacuum cleaning or dry wiping for plastics. Use one tool at a time and inspect the cloth or brush frequently so accumulated grit does not become an abrasive.
Order of operations
- Remove detachable accessories that can be safely lifted without force. Place each on a padded, inert surface and label its location.
- Brush loose dust from upper surfaces into the path of the vacuum. Do not scrub marks that do not release immediately.
- Use the lint-free cloth with almost no pressure on flat areas. Fold to a clean face as dust accumulates.
- Clean seams, grilles and cavities with the soft brush. If a bristle catches, stop rather than pulling.
- Recheck photographs and condition notes. A newly visible crack or loose fitting is a reason to stop and seek advice, not to increase suction or pressure.
When—and how—to use a barely moist cloth
Water is justified only for a non-porous, stable surface that remains dirty after dry cleaning. CCI advises moist wiping only when water is required. “Moist” means barely damp: the cloth should not drip, leave a wet trail or release liquid when squeezed.
- Choose an inconspicuous area with the same finish as the visible surface.
- Dampen a clean lint-free cloth with plain water and wring it nearly dry.
- Make one light pass, then inspect the test area as it dries.
- Proceed only if there is no color transfer, tackiness, clouding, swelling or gloss change.
- Work in small areas, immediately drying each with a second clean cloth.
Keep moisture away from seams, foam, electronics, decals, unsealed paint, fabric, leather, wood, open cracks and adhesive joints. Never spray water or cleaner onto the replica; spray can drive liquid into gaps that cannot be dried.

Products to keep off the prop
Do not use solvents, bleach, detergents, wax, vinyl erasers, rubber erasers, metal polish or household cleaning products unless a conservator has approved a treatment for the specific material and coating. CCI’s plastics guidance states: “Never use solvents, bleaches, detergents, wax or vinyl and rubber erasers.” A product that is safe for one polymer can dissolve another, extract plasticizers from rubber or leave a film that later attracts dust.
Stop immediately when a surface reacts
- Paint transfers to the cloth or brush.
- The surface becomes tacky, oily or unusually soft.
- Color changes, a finish turns cloudy or a decal lifts.
- A seam, fastener or glued joint loosens.
- Cracks widen, flakes detach or a coating begins to wrinkle.
Stop, photograph the change, isolate the affected piece and do not attempt amateur cleaning, repair or gluing. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) warns against such interventions on collection artifacts; unknown coatings and failed adhesives should be assessed by a qualified conservator.
Control the display environment
Keep the replica indoors in a stable environment. Avoid direct sunlight, bright window exposure, exterior walls, radiators, fireplaces and other strong heat sources. Light can fade paint, leather and textiles; heat can soften plastics, accelerate adhesive failure and increase warping. Royal Armouries recommends stable conditions, inert packaging and no direct sunlight, with low light especially beneficial for leather and textile components.
Allow air around vulnerable materials
Some aging plastics and rubbers emit acidic or other pollutants as they degrade. CCI notes that good ventilation is essential. Leave circulation space around the replica and its supports, particularly inside a case. Do not seal a damp prop, and do not close it in an airtight bag after cleaning until every surface and crevice is fully dry.

Keep the floor and traffic in mind
A large object can be damaged by a single tip or collision. Place it where doors, chairs, pets and routine foot traffic cannot strike it. The lowest shelf should be at least 6 inches above the floor, reducing exposure to minor floods, cleaning water and accidental kicks.
Build a stable support system
Storage hardware must carry the replica’s full weight without flexing. Select powder-coated steel or another weight-rated shelving system, anchor it where needed, and fit liners cut to the exact shelf dimensions. The U.S. National Park Service (NPS) advises choosing shelves for the collection’s weight, anchoring where necessary and adding restraints where objects could fall.
Shape supports around the prop
- Support broad, strong structural areas rather than thin fins, handles, antennas or decorative projections.
- Use a cradle or shaped blocks so the replica cannot roll, rock or rest on one fragile point.
- Line contact areas with inert polyethylene closed-cell foam, such as Ethafoam- or Volara-type material, covered so foam cannot abrade the finish.
- Use barriers or straps that restrain movement without pressing into painted surfaces.
- Check that cables, hoses and flexible parts are not bearing the object’s weight.
Never let the prop touch bare wood or particle board. NPS identifies these materials as acidic and capable of off-gassing. Keep unknown polyurethane foam and adhesive-backed foam away from the surface; their chemistry and pressure-sensitive adhesives can stain, soften or bond to finishes.
Choose among an open shelf, display case and crate
The right housing depends on how often you need access, how much dust and light protection is required, and whether the replica will remain in one place or travel.

| Housing | Advantages | Requirements and risks |
|---|---|---|
| Open anchored shelf | Fast access and the best natural ventilation. | Needs a dust cover, exact-fit liner, fall restraints and a shelf rated for the full load. It provides the least protection from dust and ultraviolet light. |
| Display case | Reduces dust, accidental contact and light exposure when fitted with suitable glazing or panels. | Must have enough internal clearance, ventilation, shelf strength and tipping resistance. A tight case can press on protrusions or trap pollutants. |
| Custom crate or archival box | Best for transport or long periods in darkness. | Requires inert lining, separate wrapping, movement blocking and enough room for the lid to close without pressure. Access is slower and ventilation must be planned. |
Compare each option by load capacity, support geometry, dust and UV protection, ventilation, access frequency, floor clearance, tipping safety and chemical stability of every contact material.
Pack a large replica without warping or cracking
NARA states that an artifact must not be folded, creased, bent, torn, crushed or otherwise deformed to make it fit a space. Apply the same rule to a prop: choose a larger container rather than forcing the replica into a small one.
Prepare the container
- Select a rigid box or crate whose interior exceeds the replica’s footprint and height, including protruding parts and padding.
- Install a rigid, level base that can carry the complete weight. Cover it with inert polyethylene foam or another stable liner.
- Build a cradle that supports strong structural zones. Test the empty cradle for rocking before placing the replica inside.
- Add side blocks or covered restraints to prevent sliding and tipping. They should touch supports or padded barriers, not delicate finishes.
Wrap and immobilize components
- Remove detachable parts only when they can be separated without force. Photograph and label each part.
- Wrap loose components separately and loosely in unbuffered acid-free tissue. Do not wind tissue tightly around soft, cracked or flaking pieces.
- Use tissue rolls or inert covered inserts to stop movement. Leave clearance around antennas, handles, fins, decals and other projections.
- Place electronics so switches, ports and wiring are not pressed by padding. Keep batteries out if the manufacturer’s instructions permit and the compartment can be safely accessed; never force a stuck compartment.
- Close the lid only after confirming that no part touches it and that padding is not compressing the replica. If the lid needs force, enlarge the container or redesign the supports.
Do not use loose packing that can migrate into vents or rub against paint. Do not seal a damp object, and leave ventilation around materials that may off-gas.

Materials checklist: preferred and prohibited choices
| Use for supports, barriers or wrapping | Avoid against the replica |
|---|---|
| Unbuffered acid-free tissue for separated parts and interleaving. | Bare wood or particle board. |
| Polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, acrylic and polyethylene closed-cell foam. | Unknown polyurethane foam or adhesive-backed foam. |
| Clean soft brushes and lint-free cloths. | Solvents, bleach, detergents, wax and household cleaners. |
| Powder-free nitrile gloves for metal handling. | Vinyl or rubber erasers and metal polish. |
| Powder-coated, anchored, weight-rated shelving with exact-fit liners. | Unrated shelves, unstable stacks or restraints that press directly on finishes. |
The Canadian Conservation Association (CCAHA) identifies polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, acrylic and polyethylene foam as stable housing materials, while warning against PVC, cellulose nitrate, cellulose acetate and polyurethane. Verify that a product’s composition is known before placing it in contact with the prop.

Inspect the replica and supports on a schedule
Inspect at least quarterly or semi-annually; choose the shorter interval for a heavily handled display, a changing environment or materials already showing degradation. Record the date and compare new photographs with the original condition record.
- Dust buildup, mould or insect activity.
- Corrosion on metal and sticky exudates from plastics or rubber.
- Fading or color shifts caused by light.
- New cracks, lifted paint, warped panels or loose fasteners.
- Compression, tearing or movement in foam liners and cradles.
- Changes in wiring, connectors, switches or other electronics.
- Loose restraints, shifted supports, shelf deflection or signs of tipping.
- Condition of coverings, environmental monitors and ventilation equipment.
CCI recommends documenting condition changes and checking mounts, padding, coverings, environmental monitors and equipment. Replace a support only after the replica is safely stabilized; never pull a compressed liner out from underneath a heavy object.
Troubleshoot common problems safely
Dust returns quickly
Check whether the object is near a window, heater, open vent or high-traffic route. Improve the room location, add a properly supported dust cover or use a ventilated case. Do not compensate with stronger suction or more frequent wet cleaning.

A surface feels sticky
Isolate the affected area from tissue, foam and neighboring parts, because exuded plasticizer can transfer. Do not apply alcohol, solvent, powder or polish. Photograph the change and consult a conservator; sticky degradation may continue even when the surface looks clean.
Foam or padding has flattened
Do not add layers until the load path is understood. A compressed liner may be allowing a hard edge to bear weight. Support the replica temporarily at sound structural points, then replace the liner with a correctly shaped, inert closed-cell polyethylene support.
Paint or a decal lifts during dusting
Stop brushing and vacuuming that area. Keep loose flakes in place rather than taping or gluing them, photograph the damage and obtain conservation advice. Further dry cleaning can remove material that is no longer bonded.
The crate will not close
Never force the lid, compress padding or bend a projection. Re-measure the packed height and width, enlarge the container or redesign the cradle so the lid closes freely with clearance on every side.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen professional conservation is the right choice
Seek a conservator before treating unknown coatings, extensive corrosion, flaking paint, cracked resin, degraded rubber, failed adhesives, mould, water exposure or any electronic fault that requires disassembly. Provide the condition photographs, material observations, cleaning steps already attempted and storage history. Professional advice is especially important when a replica has irreplaceable custom work or when a repair would permanently alter its finish.
