Use an automotive glass cleaner and a clean microfiber cloth to keep the windshield clear, but follow your vehicle’s manual for the area in front of an ADAS camera. Do not scrape the glass, assume a coating is safe there, or clean an exposed camera lens as if it were ordinary glass. Windshield replacement or camera movement may also require a vehicle-specific calibration procedure.
Clean the windshield without scratching it
For the glass, use an automotive glass cleaner and avoid abrasive fluids and scraping. Tesla’s owner-manual material hosted by NHTSA says: “Clean windows and mirrors using an automotive glass cleaner. Do not scrape or use any abrasive cleaning fluid on glass or mirrored surfaces.” That instruction is Tesla-specific, not a universal specification for every automaker.

Keep the glass in the camera’s field of view free of dirt and residue. Before cleaning that area, check the owner’s manual for your vehicle’s instructions, including whether the interior glass requires a particular method.
Clean the camera viewing area according to your vehicle’s instructions
Automakers’ procedures differ. BMW of North America’s February 14, 2025 service bulletin directs technicians to spray cleaner onto a clean, dry microfiber cloth rather than directly onto the windshield. Tesla’s Model 3 service manual describes cleaning the inner windshield camera viewing area with a clean microfiber cloth and glass cleaner, letting it dry, then checking for stains or residue. These are examples for their respective procedures, not interchangeable directions for every vehicle.

Follow your exact make, model, year, and equipment instructions. In particular, do not spray cleaner directly onto the windshield near the camera unless your vehicle’s documentation permits it.
Do not treat an exposed camera lens like windshield glass
A lens that is exposed or accessible is not necessarily meant to be wiped. Tesla owner-manual material warns against wiping debris from an exposed lens. Mahindra’s manual says dirt on the inside of the windshield in front of the camera should be handled by an authorized service center. Check your own manual before touching the lens or the camera assembly.
If contamination is inside the camera area and the manual does not authorize driver cleaning—or if the camera area is damaged—contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.

Check before applying a windshield coating
Do not assume that a water-repellent or hydrophobic treatment is appropriate across the front windshield. Tesla’s owner-manual material says to apply hydrophobic coating only to side and rear windows, not the front windshield, because it may affect Autopilot camera visibility. That is Tesla guidance; check your own automaker’s instructions before applying any treatment to the windshield, especially in the camera’s field of view.
After windshield replacement, verify whether calibration is required
Replacement glass or a camera moved from its original position can trigger a manufacturer-specific calibration procedure. Tesla’s service procedure calls for clearing calibration data when a camera has been moved, including during windshield replacement. Subaru Bulletin 12-192-15, dated October 26, 2015, requires camera inspection and adjustment as well as automatic adjustment after replacement; it says not to return the vehicle until the specified procedures succeed. These requirements apply to their respective systems and procedures, not automatically to every make.
Before authorizing glass work, ask the provider to follow the service procedure for your exact vehicle and confirm whether camera calibration is required. If it is, ask how completion will be documented. Calibration methods and requirements vary by vehicle, so do not infer what your car needs from another brand’s instructions.
