Insert the card into the dedicated storage expansion slot on the back of your Xbox Series X|S. The console should format and configure it automatically; the installation instructions do not call for a separate manual formatting step.

What you need

Use a storage expansion card designed for Xbox Series X|S, such as the Seagate Storage Expansion Card. It is made for the console’s dedicated expansion slot. A generic external USB drive is a different kind of storage and is not interchangeable for every game.

Seagate lists its Xbox Series X|S expansion card in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. Choose based on how much additional space you need; those capacities are listed options, not a tested recommendation. Check the exact model and current regional listing before buying: Seagate Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S.

Install the card

  1. Find the slot. Locate the storage expansion slot on the back of the console.
  2. Insert the card. Connect the Xbox Series X|S expansion card to that dedicated slot.
  3. Let the console configure it. The card should format and configure automatically. No separate manual formatting operation is included in the installation instructions.

Expansion card versus external USB storage

An external USB drive is not a substitute for the expansion card in every use case. SanDisk’s Xbox Series X|S external-drive guidance says Series X|S-optimized games cannot be played from external USB storage. The available guidance does not establish all transfer, storage, or backward-compatibility rules, so check Xbox’s current support information for the specific game or storage-management choice.
