To schedule a period when a teen cannot use ChatGPT, link their account and set Quiet hours in Settings > Parental controls. Study hours is different: it starts eligible new chats in Study mode but does not block access. Pair either setting with a household agreement that protects sleep, schoolwork, meals and time together; OpenAI has not published a universal daily-minute limit for teen ChatGPT use.
Set a ChatGPT cutoff with Quiet hours
- Link the accounts. In ChatGPT, a parent or guardian—or the teen—can start an invitation from Settings > Parental controls. The teen must accept it. The parent can then select the linked teen under Family members.
- Choose the cutoff. Select the teen, turn on Quiet hours, and set the start and end times. You can add more than one time block.
- Check the result. OpenAI says Quiet hours prevent ChatGPT use during the scheduled period, including ChatGPT Work. Some setting changes may not take effect immediately, and some controls apply only to new conversations, so confirm how the account behaves after making a change.
ChatGPT for Teens is rolling out to eligible teen accounts, and features can vary by region. Check the options visible in your family’s accounts rather than assuming every account has the same controls. OpenAI’s parental-controls help page has the current setup details.

Quiet hours and Study hours are not interchangeable

OpenAI describes these controls in its parental-controls guide and its Study mode announcement. If the goal is to make ChatGPT unavailable at certain times, use Quiet hours rather than relying on Study hours.
Agree on what a healthy limit means for your family
There is no established, official ChatGPT-specific daily allowance in the cited OpenAI guidance. Avoid presenting a fixed number of minutes as medical advice or expert consensus. Instead, set a routine around the teen’s age, why they use ChatGPT, sleep, school commitments and wellbeing. Any duration you choose is a family rule, not an official OpenAI limit.

A practical agreement can cover:
- Purpose: Decide when ChatGPT is useful—for example, homework support, creative projects or everyday questions—and what responsible use looks like.
- Protected times: Identify periods when it is put away, such as bedtime, meals, classwork that needs attention, or time set aside for offline activities.
- Review: Try the routine together, then adjust it if it is not working for sleep, responsibilities or the teen’s wellbeing.
OpenAI’s teen-focused safeguards include learning-oriented features and break reminders, and the company says it aims to support healthy habits and real-world relationships. Those features can complement a family routine; they do not prescribe one schedule for every teen. OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teens announcement describes its teen-focused approach, while its parental-controls announcement encourages families to discuss AI and boundaries.

Linking accounts does not give a parent access to the teen’s conversations, chat history or real-time activity. OpenAI says limited safety notifications may share that a concern exists and provide supporting information, but they do not provide chat transcripts. Make that privacy boundary part of the conversation when agreeing on rules. See OpenAI’s explanation of parental controls and privacy.
