Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Switch the tool off and disconnect it from power before cleaning. Then follow the instructions for its exact model: some shavers and removable heads can be rinsed, while others must stay dry, and clipper blades may need oil. Do not assume rinsing, soap, disinfectant or lubrication is safe just because it works on another device.
Find out what your model allows
Check the model number and user manual before removing a head, using water or applying oil. Water resistance is model-specific. Philips says waterproof shavers may be rinsed, but a shaver marked with the crossed-out tap symbol should not be cleaned with water. Its instructions for dry shavers describe removing loose debris without rinsing. See Philips’ shaver-cleaning instructions.

Look for guidance on which parts can be washed, whether soap is permitted, how to detach and refit heads or guards, and whether the blades need lubrication. Keep water and cleaning liquid away from the motor and body unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.
A safe cleaning routine
- Turn it off and disconnect power. Unplug it or disconnect charging power before cleaning. Philips specifically instructs users to disconnect a shaver from the outlet first.
- Remove only the parts the manual identifies. Detach guards, heads or cutters as directed; forcing parts apart can damage them.
- Clear loose hair. Use the supplied brush where the maker allows it. Wahl recommends brushing clipper blade sets after every use. Avoid pushing debris deeper into the mechanism.
- Rinse only washable parts. If the manual identifies the head or parts as washable, rinse those parts as directed. Philips says to let rinsed parts air-dry before reassembly or use. Do not rinse a dry-only device.
- Lubricate only when the instructions call for it. For a clipper blade set that requires oil, apply the specified blade oil sparingly, briefly run the appliance to distribute it if directed, and wipe away excess. Keep oil off the body and away from the motor.
- Reassemble when dry. Follow the model’s instructions for drying and refitting components. Do not switch it on until parts are dry and correctly seated.
How the instructions differ by brand and tool
Philips shavers
Philips distinguishes waterproof shavers, which may be rinsed, from dry models that should not be cleaned with water. Check the symbol and instructions for your particular shaver, and let washable parts air-dry.

Braun shavers
Braun says almost every Braun shaver can be rinsed under hot running water. It also says a little standard liquid soap can improve cleaning and suggests occasional cutter-block oiling. Treat this as Braun-specific guidance: check your model’s manual before using soap or oil. Some Braun shavers include a compatible SmartCare Cleaning Center that cleans, dries and recharges; it is not a universal accessory. Details are on Braun’s shaver-care page.
Wahl clippers and trimmers
Wahl recommends brushing clipper blade sets after each use, then cleaning and oiling the blades as instructed. Briefly run the appliance to spread oil and wipe off the excess. Do not immerse the appliance or store it in a wet or moist environment. Read Wahl UK’s clipper-maintenance instructions for the manufacturer’s steps.

How often to oil clipper blades
Oil frequency depends on the product and how it is used; avoid applying more than needed. Wahl’s FAQ gives approximate examples of once a month for consumer clippers and once a day for professional products, while warning against over-oiling. Those are Wahl’s brand-specific examples, not a schedule for every clipper. Check your product’s instructions; Wahl’s guidance is at its FAQ.

If cutting performance declines after long use despite regular cleaning and oiling, Wahl says the blade set may need replacement. Match the replacement to the appliance’s exact model; blades are not universally compatible. If performance drops suddenly, check for hair buildup, correct assembly and the maker’s troubleshooting guidance before ordering a part.

What to compare when choosing a grooming tool
Maintenance can be part of the decision when comparing shavers, trimmers or clippers. Check these model-specific details before buying:
- Whether the whole appliance or only its removable head is washable.
- How easily hair can be brushed or removed from the cutting parts.
- Whether the blades need oil and which oil the maker specifies.
- Whether a compatible cleaning station is included or available.
- Whether model-matched replacement heads or blades are available, and what they cost.
Manufacturer care pages describe these differences, but the cited sources do not provide comparative performance testing.
