The safest routine is simple: remove your aligners for every food or drink except water, rinse them when you take them out, store them in their case, and gently clean both surfaces with a soft-bristle toothbrush, water and a small amount of toothpaste before putting them back. Brush and floss your teeth first whenever possible. Use only cleaning products approved for your specific aligner system and follow your dentist or orthodontist’s instructions. Never use hot water, denture cleaner or a mouthwash soak.

Why clear-aligner hygiene matters

Aligners sit tightly against the teeth for most of the day. Food residue, plaque and colored drinks can remain trapped between the plastic and enamel if the trays or teeth are not cleaned before reinsertion. A dirty tray can develop an odor, look cloudy or become more noticeable when worn. Cleaning also gives you a chance to notice cracks, warping or a change in fit before a damaged tray interferes with treatment.

Cleaning does not replace normal oral hygiene. The aligners and your teeth need separate attention: clean the trays, then brush and floss your teeth after meals or snacks before putting the trays back in whenever you can.

The daily cleaning routine

1. Remove the trays carefully

  1. Wash or sanitize your hands before touching the aligners.
  2. Remove the trays using the technique your clinician showed you. Do not force a tray that is stuck or painful; contact the treating dental professional for advice.
  3. Rinse the trays with cool or lukewarm water as soon as they are out. This loosens saliva and residue before it dries.
  4. Put the trays straight into their applicable case. Do not wrap them in tissue or a napkin, where they can be thrown away accidentally.

2. Clean the aligners before reinsertion

  1. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush reserved for the aligners if possible.
  2. Apply water and a small amount of toothpaste.
  3. Gently brush the outside and inside surfaces. Pay attention to the edges, grooves and areas that contact the chewing surfaces.
  4. Rinse thoroughly under running water so no toothpaste remains.
  5. Inspect the trays, then reinsert them only when they are clean and undamaged.

Use a light touch. Scrubbing aggressively or using an unsuitable chemical can scratch or dull the plastic, making the tray look more visible. If your aligner manufacturer supplies a dedicated cleaning product, use it only as directed and only when it is compatible with your system.

3. Clean your teeth before putting trays back

After eating or snacking, brush your teeth and floss whenever possible. Cleaning the tray while leaving food or plaque on the teeth simply seals that residue against the enamel again. If you cannot brush immediately, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and rinse the aligners under warm running water. Clean your teeth and trays properly at the first practical opportunity.

What you can eat and drink while wearing aligners

Water is the safe default

Remove aligners before consuming anything except water. The American Association of Orthodontists identifies tap water as the only beverage safe to drink while aligners are in. Water helps you stay hydrated without leaving sugar, acid, pigment or milk solids on the teeth or plastic.

Remove trays for coffee, tea and other drinks

Take the aligners out for coffee, tea, alcohol, soft drinks, juice, sports drinks and flavored beverages. Hot drinks can expose the plastic to damaging heat, while colored or sugary drinks can stain the trays or remain trapped against the teeth. Alcoholic and acidic drinks also create a reason to rinse and clean your mouth before reinsertion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a case with you so removing the trays does not mean placing them on a napkin, in a pocket or on a restaurant table. After the drink or meal, brush and floss if possible, rinse the trays, and put them back only after cleaning.

Cleaning methods: what is appropriate and what to avoid

Method How to use it Important limitation
Soft-bristle toothbrush, water and a small amount of toothpaste Gently brush inside and outside surfaces, then rinse thoroughly before reinsertion. Do not scrub forcefully; follow any system-specific instructions from your clinician.
Manufacturer cleaning product Use an approved product, such as a system’s cleaning crystals, exactly according to its label and your clinician’s advice. Compatibility differs by aligner system. Do not substitute another soaking product automatically.
Water rinse Rinse trays whenever you remove them and after drinking water away from a sink. A rinse is a temporary step, not a replacement for brushing and a full oral-hygiene routine.
Denture cleaner Do not use it. The Invisalign patient instructions specifically warn not to use denture cleaners because they can dull the aligner surface.
Mouthwash soak Do not soak aligners in mouthwash. Manufacturer instructions warn that mouthwash soaks can dull the plastic and make trays more visible.
Hot water or harsh chemicals Do not use them for cleaning or soaking. Heat and harsh chemicals can deform or damage the plastic and affect fit or appearance.

When choosing any cleaner, check four things: whether the aligner manufacturer approves it, whether your treating clinician agrees, whether the ingredients carry a warning for plastic, and whether the product is specifically intended for aligners rather than dentures or general appliances.

How to deep-clean aligners without damaging them

Most people can maintain clear trays with the daily brush-and-rinse routine. A periodic cleaning product may be useful when your manufacturer provides one or your clinician recommends one. The exact soaking time and water temperature depend on the product, so follow its current instructions rather than copying a timing or temperature from another brand.

  1. Rinse the trays first to remove loose debris.
  2. Prepare the approved product exactly as its instructions state. Do not add bleach, household disinfectant, peroxide mixtures or other chemicals unless your treating professional specifically directs you to do so.
  3. Keep the trays in the solution only for the stated time.
  4. Rinse them thoroughly with clean water afterward.
  5. Brush your teeth and inspect the trays before reinserting them.

If a product leaves a film, unusual taste, discoloration or irritation, stop using it and ask the treating dentist or orthodontist whether it is suitable for your aligner material.

Keeping aligners from smelling or turning cloudy

When odor develops

Smell usually means residue is remaining on the tray, the teeth, the case or all three. Rinse the trays every time you remove them, brush both surfaces before reinsertion, and clean your teeth after meals. Wash the case by hand with soap and water and let it dry completely before storing the aligners.

Avoid trying to mask odor with mouthwash. A mouthwash soak is specifically discouraged by manufacturer instructions and can dull the plastic. If a persistent odor remains despite consistent cleaning, ask your clinician to check the trays, your oral health and the fit.

When trays look cloudy

Cloudiness can result from residue or from a surface that has been dulled by an unsuitable cleaner. Return to the approved brush-and-rinse routine, stop using denture cleaners and mouthwash soaks, and avoid hot water and harsh chemicals. Do not polish or scrape the plastic. If the appearance does not improve, show the tray to your treating professional; a cloudy surface may need a clinician’s assessment rather than more aggressive cleaning.

Clean and store the case too

The case touches the aligners, so a neglected case can re-contaminate clean trays. Hand-wash it with soap and water, rinse away the soap and allow it to dry. Keep the case in a cool, dry place. Store the aligners in the case whenever they are not in your mouth, away from hot water, harsh chemicals, young children and pets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a spare case if you travel or regularly move between work, school and home. A replacement case is useful if the original is lost or damaged, although many patients receive a case from their provider.

Inspect trays every day

Look at the aligners before insertion and again before bed. Check the edges, tooth-shaped areas and any attachment or cutout for:

  • Cracks or splits
  • Sharp edges
  • Clouding that appeared suddenly
  • Warping, deformation or distortion
  • A fit that is looser, tighter or different from the expected movement

Do not continue using a tray with a severe crack. The manufacturer guidance describes cracks about the height of a tooth as a reason to stop and contact the doctor immediately. A sharp, painful or poorly fitting tray also warrants prompt professional advice. Do not trim, heat, glue or reshape it yourself; an alteration can change the planned tooth movement.

A practical routine when you are away from home

At work, school or in public

  • Carry the case, a soft-bristle toothbrush, toothpaste and floss.
  • Remove the aligners before meals and drinks other than water.
  • Rinse your mouth and trays when brushing is temporarily impossible.
  • Keep the trays in the case, never loose in a bag or wrapped in paper.
  • Complete the full brush-and-floss routine as soon as you have access to a sink.

During travel

Pack the cleaning items in a small, leak-resistant pouch. Use the water temperature recommended by your aligner system; do not use very hot water from a hotel kettle or tap. If an approved cleaning product is part of your routine, carry enough for the trip in its original container and follow its label. Keep the case somewhere cool and dry rather than in a hot car or direct sun.

Wear time and cleaning: balancing both requirements

Cleaning should not become a reason to leave trays out for long periods. The Invisalign consumer resource mentions a general wear target of 20–22 hours per day, but that is a treatment-use recommendation, not a cleaning-outcome statistic. Your dentist or orthodontist may prescribe a different schedule for your case, so follow the individualized instruction.

Plan meals and cleaning breaks so the aligners can be removed, your teeth can be cleaned, and the trays can be reinserted promptly. Never compensate for a missed wear period by forcing a tray that no longer fits; contact the treating professional if the schedule has been disrupted or a tray cannot be seated.

When to contact your dentist or orthodontist

Contact the treating professional promptly if you notice:

  • A severe crack, split or missing piece
  • Deformation after exposure to heat or chemicals
  • A sharp edge that cuts or irritates tissue
  • Persistent pain, swelling or unusual sensitivity
  • A tray that will not seat, rocks, or no longer follows the tooth shape
  • Persistent odor or cloudiness despite correct cleaning
  • A lost tray or case, especially if you cannot maintain the prescribed sequence

Keep the damaged tray and bring it to the appointment unless the clinician tells you otherwise. The professional can decide whether you should wear a previous tray, move to the next one or obtain a replacement. Do not make that change on your own.

Use professionally supervised treatment

Clear-aligner treatment should be prescribed and supervised by a licensed dentist or orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists states: “The FDA has not authorized clear aligners that are sold directly to consumers without a prescription and supervision by a dentist or orthodontist.” Supervision matters because cleaning questions can overlap with problems such as decay, gum inflammation, attachment damage, an incorrect fit or a tray that is no longer moving teeth as planned.

Manufacturer instructions and your treating clinician’s directions take priority if they differ from a general maintenance routine. Bring the actual aligner system’s name and product instructions to appointments so advice is based on the plastic and design you are using.

A simple checklist

  • Remove trays for every food or beverage except water.
  • Rinse trays whenever you remove them.
  • Store them in the applicable case, not in tissue.
  • Brush inside and outside surfaces with a soft-bristle brush, water and a small amount of toothpaste.
  • Brush and floss your teeth before reinsertion whenever possible.
  • Use only manufacturer-approved cleaning products and follow their directions.
  • Never use denture cleaners, mouthwash soaks, hot water or harsh chemicals.
  • Wash the case by hand with soap and water and let it dry.
  • Inspect trays before insertion and before bed.
  • Report cracks, deformation, pain, sharp edges, poor fit, persistent odor or cloudiness promptly.
