Descaling recipes and soak times differ by model, so do not assume one vinegar or citric-acid mixture is right for every kettle. Rinse the interior thoroughly before making drinks again.
Clean the kettle safely
- Unplug and cool it. Remove a cordless kettle from its powered base and wait until it is fully cool before cleaning.
- Wipe the exterior. Use a clean, damp cloth. Do not immerse the kettle, base, plug, or cord in water; KRUPS explicitly warns against immersion in its user guidance, and T-fal recommends wiping the exterior with a clean cloth for its compact model.
- Clean a removable scale filter separately. Follow the manual for removing and cleaning it. KRUPS says its filter can be brushed or soaked in diluted vinegar or citric acid; T-fal also gives filter-cleaning guidance for the Aprecia Mini Kettle. Use a soft brush and avoid forcing or damaging the mesh.
Descale mineral buildup
Scale is mineral residue left as water heats; Fellow says it is primarily calcium carbonate, and the amount and appearance depend on the water source. Pale deposits are one visible sign. Fellow also lists slow temperature response, over-boiling, inaccurate readings, and poor heating efficiency as possible symptoms in its kettle-care guidance.

Check your kettle’s manual before choosing a descaler or recipe. Vinegar and citric acid are both manufacturer-listed options, but their proportions and wait times are not interchangeable across models.

Vinegar
Fellow’s method is to mix equal parts vinegar and water, bring the mixture to a boil, then leave it for at least 30 minutes. KRUPS gives different instructions for its cited model: use commercial 8-degree white vinegar without heating it and leave it for one hour. Vinegar can leave an odor, so use the method and dilution specified for your own kettle.

Citric acid
Fellow specifies 500 mL water with two spoonfuls of citric acid, brought to a boil and left for at least 30 minutes. KRUPS instead specifies 25 g citric acid in 0.5 L of boiled water, left for 15 minutes. These are examples from different manufacturer instructions, not a universal recipe. Fellow notes that citric acid is somewhat stronger and avoids the lingering scent vinegar may leave.
Kettle-specific descaler
Use a commercial kettle descaler only if the kettle manufacturer permits it, and follow both the kettle manual and descaler label. KRUPS directs users of its plastic-kettle product to follow the descaler maker’s instructions.

Rinse, dry, and return to use
- Empty the descaling solution carefully.
- Rinse the kettle thoroughly with fresh water. KRUPS specifies five or six rinses for its cited model instructions.
- If vinegar odor or an unusual taste remains, continue rinsing. Boil fresh water and discard it before using the kettle for drinks.
- Dry the exterior and let the kettle cool and dry before placing it back on its base.
Do not scrub the interior with steel wool or an abrasive brush: Fellow warns these can damage the inner surface. For the outside and removable parts, use a clean cloth or other gentle cleaning tool, consistent with the manual.

Descale when you see deposits or notice possible scale-related symptoms, and use the interval in your kettle’s manual. Water mineral content affects how quickly buildup forms. KRUPS recommends descaling at least monthly and more often in very hard-water areas for the instructions on its cited model; that interval should not be treated as a rule for every compact kettle. T-fal advises regular descaling for its 0.8 L Aprecia Mini FAQ but does not specify a universal interval.

T-fal also recommends emptying excess water after use to reduce water staining and prevent leakage if the kettle tips. This is model-specific guidance, not a requirement established for every kettle.
