Waves exploit fractures and other weak zones to carve caves through a headland; the resulting arch gradually weakens until its roof or supports fail, sometimes leaving a sea stack. The process is ongoing, but the precise timing and immediate trigger of a particular collapse can be difficult to establish.
How a sea arch forms—and what happens next
1. Waves enlarge weaknesses in a headland
Sea caves commonly begin where waves reach faults, fractures, bedding planes, or other zones of weakness. Water and sediment carried by waves widen joints, cracks, and softer layers in the rock. The National Park Service describes these weaknesses as the routes along which caves are formed (NPS: Coastal Processes).

2. A cave opens through the rock
As erosion continues, a cave may cut through a headland and open at both ends. The remaining rock above the opening forms a natural bridge: a sea arch. The arch is not a finished feature, but a stage in a changing coastline (NPS: Coastal Processes).

Waves continue striking the arch and its supports. Over time, erosion weakens the roof, the sides, or both until the bridge collapses. A surviving pillar or detached offshore remnant may be left as a sea stack; erosion then continues to reshape the coast.

How waves wear away an arch
Wave erosion involves more than water simply washing over rock. The National Park Service identifies wave energy and the material being attacked as important factors in how much erosion occurs (NPS: Coastal Processes).
- Impact and compressed air: Breaking waves can trap and compress air against rock. The pressure and impact of water can dislodge fractured rock and loose particles, a process called quarrying.
- Abrasion: Waves move sand and other particles against the shoreline, scraping and wearing the rock.
- Repeated attack on weak points: Fractures and less-resistant layers give waves places to widen, so the strength and arrangement of the rock help shape how an arch erodes.
Large swell or a storm can increase wave energy, but the timing of a collapse during rough weather does not, by itself, prove that the weather caused it. Rock composition and structure, climate, and local wave patterns all help determine how a rocky coast changes (NPS: Coastal Processes; NPS: Coastal Landforms).

What Hōlei Sea Arch’s collapse shows about cause and timing
Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park reported on October 1, 2026, that Hōlei Sea Arch—described as 90 feet (27.4 meters) high before its collapse—was standing on Wednesday, September 23, and had collapsed by Sunday night, September 27. The exact time is unknown. The park said the collapse may have occurred while the area was temporarily closed during Tropical Storm Nolo; it did not identify the storm as the definitive cause (NPS: Hōlei Sea Arch Collapse).

The site had documented signs of instability before the collapse. Earthquakes during the 2018 Kīlauea eruption and summit collapse damaged nearby cliffs. New cracks and instability prompted the park to close the original viewing area in January 2020, and a safer viewing area opened in March 2020. Massive surf during Tropical Storm Darby later broke a piece from the arch’s lower part. Those events establish prior damage and instability, but they do not establish one immediate cause for the 2026 failure (NPS: Hōlei Sea Arch Collapse).

How to judge claims about why an arch collapsed
A careful explanation separates what was observed from what is inferred. For a particular site, consider:
- Rock structure and material: What fractures, bedding, or less-resistant layers could waves exploit?
- Wave exposure and energy: Is there evidence of ordinary wave attack, high-energy swell, or storm conditions? A storm occurring near the time of collapse is not proof of causation.
- Documented damage: Were cracks, earlier rock loss, or cliff instability recorded before the failure?
- Certainty of attribution: Which facts are confirmed, which mechanisms are suspected, and what remains unknown?
The distinction matters beyond ocean coasts, too. Glen Canyon’s Double Arch at Lake Powell was a sandstone feature, not a coastal sea arch. The National Park Service confirmed that it collapsed on August 8, 2024, and said weathering, wind, and rain had affected it; changing water levels and wave erosion were suspected contributors, but the agency said it did not know the cause (NPS: Double Arch Collapse). It is an example of why a plausible mechanism should not be presented as a proven trigger.

Safety around sea arches and unstable cliffs
After Hōlei’s collapse, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park instructed visitors to stay out of closed areas and away from cliff edges, which can collapse without warning. The park describes the rough, wave-swept coast as a falling and drowning risk (NPS: Hōlei Sea Arch Collapse). Follow local closures and warnings rather than approaching an arch or cliff edge to inspect damage.
