Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a WordPress featured image looks blurry or shows the wrong part of the picture, first check the image file the page actually serves and how the theme or block displays it. WordPress may use a generated image size instead of the original; a small variant stretched too large can look soft, while a crop may be applied during image generation or by the page layout. Identify which is happening before changing settings.
Start by checking the image the page actually displays
- Open the affected page and inspect its image. Open the image in a new tab, or inspect the page’s HTML, and note the file URL and pixel dimensions. WordPress and themes can choose among several generated image sizes, so the featured image on the page may not be the original upload. The URL and dimensions of the delivered file are more useful than assuming which size the theme uses.
- Compare pixels with the displayed size. If the delivered image is smaller than the space it fills, the layout is enlarging a low-resolution variant; that can make it look soft. Check the original upload’s dimensions and quality, then determine whether a larger suitable image size is available. WordPress’s image guidance explains that resolution affects clarity: WordPress image resizing guidance.
- Find where any crop is introduced. It could be built into a generated thumbnail, requested by the theme, or applied by an Image block’s display settings. The sections below explain how to distinguish these cases.
Fix a blurry featured image
Check whether a small variant is being enlarged
WordPress documents several default image-size examples: thumbnail up to 150 × 150 pixels, medium up to 300 × 300, medium-large at 768 pixels wide with no height limit, and large up to 1024 × 1024. These are defaults in the theme handbook, not a guarantee of what a particular theme displays; a site or theme can change the available sizes and the size selected for a featured image. See WordPress’s featured images and post thumbnails handbook.

If the page is using a small variant, use an appropriately sized source or configure the theme to request a suitable registered size. Do not expect sharpening to recreate detail missing from a low-resolution original; WordPress’s guidance discusses resizing and sharpening but cannot restore source detail that was never present.
Check the original and any custom image size
Compare the Media Library original with the file the page delivers. If the original itself is small or low quality, a larger generated version will not add real detail. If the original is adequate but the theme needs a larger intermediate size, make sure that size is registered and generated. WordPress’s set_post_thumbnail_size() reference explains how a post-thumbnail size and its crop behavior are registered.

Regenerate variants after changing image sizes
Registering a new size does not automatically create it for images already uploaded. The WordPress developer reference explicitly notes: “This function will not resize your existing featured images.” After changing size definitions or switching themes, regenerate image variants for existing uploads, then inspect the page again to confirm it requests the intended size. WordPress Learn covers this theme-change workflow: Regenerate thumbnails after changing themes.

Standard Media thumbnail crop
In the WordPress dashboard, go to Settings → Media. Review the thumbnail width and height, and whether Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions is enabled. WordPress documentation describes the standard thumbnail default as 150 × 150 pixels and square-cropped; those settings can be changed. That documented default is not a universal featured-image size, because a theme may request a different size. See WordPress Media settings documentation.

Theme-registered crop
A theme can register a custom image size and specify whether it should be cropped. The developer reference documents proportional resizing when cropping is false, and cropping to the requested dimensions when it is true or crop positions are supplied. Check the active theme’s registration and the named size it outputs; changing the standard Media thumbnail settings alone may not affect a custom theme size. The relevant behavior is documented in the post thumbnail size reference and the featured images handbook.
Image block aspect ratio and Scale
If the image is displayed in an Image block, select the block and inspect its aspect ratio and Scale settings. Cover fills the selected area and may crop the image; adjust the focal point to keep the important subject visible. Contain preserves the full image but can leave empty space in the area. These presentation settings do not edit the original file. Details are in WordPress’s Image block documentation.

Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Where to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Soft or pixelated image, especially when displayed large | The delivered file’s pixel dimensions compared with the rendered area | Use a sufficiently large source or a suitable generated size; make sure the theme requests that size. |
| Square or fixed-ratio crop across the site | Settings → Media and the theme’s registered image sizes | Check which setting actually controls the size, then regenerate variants if the size definition changed. |
| Image subject is cut off in one block or layout | Image block aspect ratio, Scale, and focal point | Use Contain to show the full image, or adjust the focal point when Cover is needed. |
| Problem appeared after a theme change | The new theme’s requested size and crop behavior; whether old uploads have that variant | Regenerate variants for existing uploads, then confirm the page requests the new size. |
Retest after making a change
- Open the affected page at desktop and mobile widths and inspect the delivered image URL and dimensions again.
- If you changed a size definition or theme, confirm that existing uploads have been regenerated and that the page requests the intended variant.
- Refresh the page and clear relevant caches if the old result remains. If an optimization plugin or service is active, compare its delivered image with the Media Library version as a site-specific check; that possibility is not established as a universal WordPress cause.
