Why Do Pundits Predict the Premier League Champion—and How Reliable Are They?

Pundit title picks are a recurring preview format, not guarantees. Recent BBC reviews show why champion, top-four and match predictions need separate scorecards.

Pundits make Premier League title predictions as part of a recurring season-preview format: their picks give audiences something to debate before the first match and something to compare with the final table. The evidence does not establish any particular pundit’s private motive. As forecasts, their calls are uncertain: recent BBC Sport reviews show that pundits can miss the champion and the top four, while performance varies from season to season and depends on what counts as a correct prediction.

Why do pundits make title predictions?

Broadcasters and sports outlets ask pundits to forecast the season, publish their picks and sometimes return afterward to compare them with the results. BBC Sport’s format asks for a predicted top four as well as a likely champion, and its reviews revisit those choices. That creates a forward-looking angle for a preview and a clear point of comparison once the season ends.

That is what the published format demonstrates; it does not establish why any individual pundit agrees to take part. The reviewed coverage contains no direct explanation from the pundits of their motives, nor a statement from BBC Sport that the exercise is designed to drive audience numbers or serve a commercial goal. It would therefore be speculation to say pundits choose surprising teams for attention, to promote betting, or because they value controversy over accuracy.

How accurate have pundit predictions been?

Recent BBC Sport reviews illustrate how difficult a champion prediction can be. In its 2024–25 review, published on 26 May 2025, none of 30 pundits had picked Liverpool to win; Stephen Warnock and Fara Williams came closest by placing Liverpool second. In the BBC’s 2025–26 review, published on 25 May 2026, 21 of 33 pundits selected Liverpool, but Arsenal won. These are examples from one publisher’s prediction exercises, not a comprehensive record of pundits across outlets or a multi-year scorecard for each individual.

What different seasons show

Season reviewed Pundit results reported by BBC Sport What the result does—and does not—show
2020–21 and 2021–22, in the BBC’s 2022 review None of 20 pundits had picked Liverpool, the 2020–21 champion. For 2021–22, 13 picked Manchester City, the champion; two predicted the top three in the correct order, and none named all four top-four clubs. A widely selected eventual champion can be easier to call in one season, while getting the order or full top four right is a separate task. BBC Sport, 2022.
2024–25, in the BBC’s 2025 review None of 30 pundits picked Liverpool as champion; two placed Liverpool second. Opta’s pre-season forecast selected Manchester City to win and put Liverpool third. The pundits and model both missed the champion in this example. Opta’s forecast also selected all four eventual top-four clubs, with two in the correct positions. BBC Sport, 2025.
2025–26, in the BBC’s 2026 review Six of 33 pundits selected Arsenal, the champion; none picked more than two clubs in the actual top four. Twenty-one selected Liverpool. Even when some pundits identify the champion, that does not mean they have identified the other leading teams. BBC says these predictions reflected squads as they stood on 14 August, before the transfer window closed. BBC Sport, 2026.

The BBC’s 2025 review also reported that Opta’s pre-season model put Manchester City’s chance of winning 2024–25 at 82.2%, yet Liverpool took the title. Opta simulated all 380 fixtures 10,000 times; BBC described its model as drawing on betting-market odds and Opta’s Power Rankings, which use past results. An 82.2% chance is a probability for that forecast, not a promise that the outcome will happen or a general measure of the model’s accuracy.

In the 2026 review, BBC reported an Opta title probability of 28.5% for Liverpool before 2025–26; Liverpool did not win. The same review said a poll of thousands of BBC readers also selected Liverpool, while the BBC’s AI table forecast selected Manchester City. Those comparisons describe one pre-season snapshot, not a sustained contest showing that pundits, readers or models systematically outperform one another. BBC Sport, 2026.

What does “reliable” mean for a football prediction?

A forecast can be judged in several ways, and those tests are not interchangeable. Getting the champion right is a single-outcome hit; naming all four top-four clubs tests membership; placing them in exact order is harder still. A forecast of individual match results has a different target again. A claim that pundits are reliable is only meaningful when it says which target was graded, when the prediction was made and how success was measured.

  • Champion selection: Did the forecast name the eventual winner?

  • Exact order or ranking: Were clubs placed in the positions they ultimately finished in?
  • Probability quality: When a forecaster assigns chances, do outcomes over many comparable forecasts occur at roughly those rates? A single season cannot establish calibration.
  • Match forecasting or betting return: Did predictions correctly anticipate match outcomes, or produce a return under a specified betting strategy? Neither is the same as selecting a season champion.

A fair comparison also needs a stated sample size, a consistent forecast date and an appropriate baseline—such as a market or crowd forecast only when it uses the same target and evaluation rule. The BBC retrospectives cited here do not provide a multi-year accuracy score for each named pundit or a probability-calibration series.

What academic evidence says about match forecasts

David Butler, Robert Butler and John Eakins studied expert and lay forecasts of Premier League match outcomes across three seasons. Their peer-reviewed article, published in the European Journal of Operational Research in 2021, reports that former professional players forecast better than laypeople. The results partially supported the possibility of greater precision from crowds, and pundits generated positive returns in the study’s betting framework while crowd and lay forecasts generated losses. University College Cork research record.

This is evidence about match-level predictions under the researchers’ methods, not pre-season champion picks. A positive return in a particular betting framework does not mean every prediction was right, and it cannot be treated as a general hit rate. The study’s accessible university record does not state the exact sample size, odds, return magnitude or full scoring method.

Do early league standings make title forecasts dependable?

In-season table position provides useful evidence, but it does not settle the title race. A Premier League historical analysis by Alex Keble, published on 5 November 2025, examined the 26 full seasons from 1999–2000 through 2024–25. It found that 12 of the 26 leaders after ten matchweeks—46%—went on to win the title, while 21 eventual champions—81%—were already in the top three at that stage. The other champions came from fourth through sixth place. These are historical base rates, not an audit of pundit forecasts or a guarantee about any current season. How to assess a pundit’s track record

  1. Identify the target. Separate champion picks from top-four membership, exact finishing order and match outcomes.
  2. Check when the forecast was made. A pre-season prediction made before the transfer window closes uses different information from a forecast made later in the season.
  3. Find the scoring rule. An exact hit, partial credit for near misses, ranking error, probability calibration and betting return answer different questions.
  4. Look at the sample. One memorable miss or success says little about long-run performance. Check how many forecasts and seasons were assessed.
  5. Compare like with like. A market, crowd or model is a useful benchmark only if its forecasts were made at a comparable time and graded on the same target and rule.

On the available evidence, the cautious conclusion is that pundit predictions are useful as informed, debatable opinions—not dependable guarantees. The retrospective examples show that pundits and forecasting models can miss the eventual champion, while the match-prediction study finds differences between expert groups under a separate task. A stronger claim about who forecasts titles best would require a consistent, multi-season comparison using the same target and scoring method.
