Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCleaning cannot make an original PlayStation 2 game disc playable on a standard PlayStation 5. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide states that PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 format software “cannot be played from a disc.” Cleaning is still useful for removing fingerprints and dust, and careful inspection can prevent damage to a compatible console. It cannot add PS2 compatibility, bypass the PS5’s supported-format list or turn a badly damaged disc into a safe PS5 disc.
If your goal is to play the game, use the cleaned disc in hardware that officially supports PS2 discs, or use an official re-release where one exists. If your goal is to test a PS5 drive, use a known-good PS5 or PS4 game disc, Blu-ray or DVD instead of the PS2 disc.

What happens when you put a PS2 disc in a PS5?
A disc-drive PS5 can read supported PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray game discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD formats. The PS5 Digital Edition has no optical-disc drive at all. Neither model provides disc-based playback for original PS2 software.

The limitation is platform compatibility, not merely the condition of your particular disc. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide explicitly says: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” A perfectly clean, professionally resurfaced PS2 disc therefore remains a PS2 disc that the PS5 does not support.

The guide’s supported optical-media list includes Ultra HD Blu-ray, compatible PS4 Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE, DVD-ROM, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW and AVCHD. That list describes disc and video formats, not a promise that every PlayStation generation runs from a disc. PS2 game software is specifically excluded.
Sony’s often-quoted claim that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were playable on PS5, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2020, concerns PS4 backward compatibility. It does not imply PS2 disc support. A PS4 title that has been tested and supported is a different case from an original PS2 game, even when both are sold on similar-looking optical media.
Cleaning versus repairing: two different jobs
Cleaning removes contamination
Cleaning removes fingerprints, dust and other material sitting on the disc surface. Those contaminants can interfere with a compatible optical drive’s ability to read the disc. Cleaning is low risk when done with the correct cloth and motion, but it does not replace missing data or remove deep plastic damage.
A disc that looks cloudy because of fingerprints may improve after a careful wipe. A disc with a scratch that remains visible after cleaning has a physical defect, not merely dirt. Do not keep rubbing in the hope that a deeper mark will disappear; repeated polishing can create more surface damage.
Resurfacing removes material
Resurfacing uses equipment to remove a very thin layer of the disc’s plastic and polish the surface. It may recover a scratched disc for use in compatible PS2 hardware, depending on the scratch depth and the service’s process. It changes the disc, however, and is not a way to obtain PS2 support on PS5.
Sony warns against using discs “that are cracked or deformed, or discs that have been repaired” because the console may be damaged. Treat a resurfaced disc as repaired media: do not insert it into a PS5. If preservation is important, ask a reputable professional service whether the disc is suitable for a compatible PS2 console and what guarantee, if any, applies to that particular condition.
How to clean a scratched PS2 disc safely
The following method follows Sony’s support guidance for scratched or dirty optical discs. It is intended to remove surface contamination, not to refinish the disc.
- Wash and dry your hands. Oils from your fingers can leave a new film on the reading surface. Dry hands also make it easier to hold the disc securely without dropping it.
- Work over a clean, stable surface. A case or soft, clean cloth under the disc prevents the label side from being dragged over grit. Keep liquids, food and loose debris away from the work area.
- Hold the disc by its outer edge or center hole. Avoid touching the data surface, which is the shiny side opposite the printed label. Do not pinch the playable area while turning the disc.
- Use a clean, lint-free optical-disc cloth. Choose a cloth made specifically for Blu-ray Discs or DVDs. Do not use a paper towel, tissue, rough household rag or cloth that may contain grit. A low-cost optical cloth is the appropriate cleaning purchase; expensive repair equipment is not needed for ordinary fingerprints.
- Wipe in straight strokes from the center hole toward the outer edge. Sony’s instruction is to wipe from the center toward the edge. Use light pressure and a fresh part of the cloth for each stroke. Do not scrub in a circular path around the disc; a circular scratch follows the same track the laser is trying to read and can affect a longer run of data.
- Inspect the disc under a bright light. Look for cracks, warping, separation around the hub, deep gouges and damage to the label. Surface marks that remain after cleaning may be scratches rather than dirt. Check both sides and look especially closely at the center hole, where a crack can spread as the disc spins.
- Let the disc remain dry and free of loose fibers. Do not apply liquid, heat or a household polish. Sony’s published method is the dry lint-free cloth and center-to-edge motion. If a cloth leaves fibers, remove them gently with a clean section rather than using adhesive tape or a sharp object.
- Test it only in hardware that supports the format. A cleaned PS2 disc can be tested in a compatible PlayStation 2 or other officially compatible hardware. Do not use a PS5 as a test for PS2 compatibility.
What not to use on a PS2 disc
Toothpaste, baking soda, metal polish, abrasive compounds, solvents, window cleaner, alcohol mixtures, heat guns and aggressive buffing are household suggestions rather than Sony-endorsed procedures in the available guidance. Abrasives can create additional scratches or an uneven surface; solvents can attack coatings, and heat can warp the disc. Once the surface is made worse, a professional service may no longer be able to recover it.

Toothpaste is especially unreliable because different formulas contain different abrasives and additives. It cannot restore data that has been damaged through the disc’s protective layers, and rubbing it in circles can create the wrong kind of scratches. If a lint-free cloth does not resolve a read problem on compatible hardware, stop experimenting with household substances.
Do not use a knife, razor, sanding material or a powered buffer. Those methods remove material unevenly and make it impossible to know whether the disc remains within safe manufacturing tolerances. The fact that a disc looks shinier afterward is not evidence that it is readable or safe.
When a PS2 disc should not be inserted
Do not put the disc in a PS5—or any expensive optical drive—if inspection finds any of the following:
- A crack running from the center hole or across the disc.
- Visible warping, bubbling, delamination or a deformed hub.
- A deep gouge that catches a fingernail or exposes a damaged layer.
- Loose or lifting label material that could separate while spinning.
- Evidence that the disc has already been repaired, glued or resurfaced and is now unstable.
A disc spins at high speed. A cracked, deformed or repaired disc can break apart or place unusual forces on the drive. Sony’s safety guidance says such media may damage the console. Cleaning a dangerous disc does not make it safe.
If the label is peeling, do not try to secure it with household glue or tape. That creates repaired media and can change the disc’s balance. Set it aside for professional assessment or replacement instead of risking a drive.
Can resurfacing make a PS2 game work on PS5?
No. Resurfacing can sometimes improve readability in a compatible PS2 drive, but it cannot change the software format encoded on the disc. The PS5’s unsupported-format message is expected when the console encounters original PS2 software, even if the surface is flawless.
Resurfacing also creates a separate safety question. Sony specifically cautions against repaired discs. That warning means there is no manufacturer-backed assurance that a resurfaced PS2 disc is safe to spin in a PS5. If you choose professional resurfacing to preserve the game, use the result only with hardware designed to read PS2 discs unless the console manufacturer explicitly states otherwise.

How to tell a dirty disc from an unsupported disc
The on-screen symptom can be confusing because both a damaged disc and an unsupported format may produce a failure message. Use the platform and the test medium to separate the causes:
| Observation | Most likely explanation | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| The console is a PS5 Digital Edition. | There is no optical-disc drive. | Use a digital release or a console with a drive and appropriate format support. |
| The console is a disc-drive PS5 and the disc is an original PS2 game. | Unsupported PS2 disc software, regardless of cleanliness. | Stop trying to make that disc work on PS5; use compatible PS2 hardware or an official re-release. |
| A supported PS5/PS4 disc, Blu-ray or DVD also fails. | Possible drive, software or console issue. | Follow Sony’s troubleshooting flow and contact PlayStation Repairs if the problem persists. |
| Only one supported disc fails, while other known-good media works. | Likely contamination or damage on that disc. | Clean it with the center-to-edge method and inspect it for defects. |
Do not interpret an unsupported message as proof that the PS2 disc needs more polishing. If the same disc fails on every PS5 but works on compatible PS2 hardware, that is consistent with the platform limitation. Conversely, if several supported PS5 discs fail, the console deserves attention rather than the PS2 disc.
Testing a PS5 disc drive without risking the PS2 disc
- Confirm the model. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot accept any disc. A disc-drive model is required for optical-media testing.
- Choose known-good supported media. Use a PS5 game disc, a PS4 Blu-ray game disc, a standard Blu-ray or a DVD that is known to work in another player. Do not use a cracked, deformed or repaired disc.
- Insert the test disc normally. Give the console time to identify it and display its content. Avoid forcing a disc or repeatedly ejecting and reinserting it.
- Repeat with a second supported disc if necessary. One failed disc can be defective; several known-good supported discs failing points more strongly to the drive or console.
- Use Sony’s support troubleshooting path. If multiple supported discs fail after the basic checks, contact PlayStation Repairs rather than repeatedly inserting an unsupported PS2 disc.
This test separates a hardware question from a compatibility question. A functioning drive can correctly reject PS2 software, while a faulty drive may also reject supported Blu-ray or DVD media. Use only media that the PS5 is designed to read when making that diagnosis.

Choosing the right next step
| Goal | Best option | Compatibility | Hardware risk | Cost and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remove fingerprints or dust | Lint-free Blu-ray/DVD cloth; wipe center to edge | Does not change format compatibility | Low when performed gently | Low cost; may not help deep scratches |
| Recover a scratched game for PS2 play | Professional resurfacing, after checking the disc’s condition | May help only in compatible PS2 hardware | Do not use repaired media in a PS5 | Paid service; result depends on damage and service guarantee |
| Play the game on a PS5 | Check for an official PS5/PS4 release or supported digital version | Depends on the specific title and release | No physical-disc risk from the PS2 disc | May require buying a different edition |
| Diagnose a PS5 drive | Test known-good supported Blu-ray or DVD media | Uses formats the PS5 supports | Low if media is undamaged | No special repair product required |
| Preserve the original disc | Clean gently, store it safely and avoid unnecessary testing | Preserves the PS2 format; does not add PS5 support | Lowest risk when not inserted into unsupported hardware | Retains the original, but playback still needs compatible hardware |
Compatibility should be the first filter, followed by safety, then cost. Buying a cloth makes sense for a dirty disc. Paying for resurfacing makes sense only when you intend to use compatible hardware and accept that the result is not guaranteed. Buying a different edition or official re-release may be the most practical route when the objective is simply to play on PS5.
Preserving the original without unnecessary testing
If the disc is rare or personally important, photograph its condition before cleaning and keep the case, artwork and disc together. Do not keep inserting it into unsupported hardware to see whether a different cleaning attempt worked. Every spin is unnecessary wear when the platform cannot run the software.
For a disc that is merely dirty, one careful cleaning is preferable to repeated experiments. For a disc with a crack, deformation or prior repair, preservation means keeping it out of optical drives and obtaining professional advice or replacement media. Cleaning is not a substitute for a backup or an official re-release.
Storage after cleaning
Once the disc is clean and completely dry, return it to a rigid case rather than leaving it loose on a desk. Keep it away from direct heat, strong sunlight, moisture and objects that can scratch the reading surface. Store it vertically if the case is designed for that position, and handle it by the edge or hub each time.

A protective case reduces new contamination, but it cannot reverse a crack or deep gouge that already exists. If the original case is missing, use a clean optical-disc case that holds the disc by its center hub rather than an envelope with a rough inner surface.

Common questions answered directly
Will a clean PS2 disc work in a PS5?
No. Cleaning can remove dirt, but the PS5 does not play PS2 software from discs.
Why does my PS5 say the disc is unsupported?
An original PS2 game is outside the PS5’s supported disc-software formats. The message does not prove that your disc is dirty or that resurfacing would solve the problem.
Can toothpaste fix a scratched PS2 disc?
There is no manufacturer-backed reason to use toothpaste. Its abrasives and circular rubbing can add damage. Use a lint-free optical-disc cloth and straight center-to-edge strokes instead.
Can a resurfaced PS2 game be tested on PS5?
It should not be. Resurfacing is a repair, and Sony warns against repaired discs because they may damage the console. Test a recovered disc only in compatible PS2 hardware.
What if my cleaned disc fails in a PS2?
Inspect it again for cracks, warping and deep gouges, then consider a professional resurfacing service for compatible hardware. A service cannot guarantee recovery when the damage reaches data layers, and its result does not alter PS5 compatibility.
How do I know whether the PS5 drive itself is faulty?
Try more than one known-good supported PS5/PS4 game disc, Blu-ray or DVD. If multiple supported discs fail, use Sony’s troubleshooting guidance and PlayStation Repairs. Do not use the PS2 disc as the diagnostic test.
Does the PS5 Digital Edition support any PS2 disc after cleaning?
No. The Digital Edition has no optical-disc drive, so it cannot accept a PS2 disc or any other physical disc. You would need a digital release, an official re-release or compatible physical hardware.
Is a professional resurfacing service worth paying for?
It can be considered when the goal is to preserve a scratched game for compatible PS2 hardware, but it is a paid service with an outcome that depends on the disc and the provider. Ask about inspection and guarantees, and never treat the resurfaced disc as safe for a PS5.
