Start with the backpack’s sewn-in care label or model-specific manufacturer instructions; they take precedence because cleaning rules differ. For a small stain, the cautious first step is to remove loose dirt, dab with a damp cloth and mild soap, rinse away residue, and let the bag air dry completely. Do not machine-wash or tumble-dry it unless its manufacturer explicitly permits those methods.
Why the care label matters
“Water-resistant” does not describe one universal finish. Eastpak says its water-resistant bags have a delicate internal polyurethane (PU) coating and an external durable water repellent (DWR) treatment. An unsuitable wash or dryer could affect protective layers as well as padding and structure. Follow the label or instructions for your exact model rather than assuming advice for another brand applies. Eastpak’s backpack-cleaning guidance and Deuter’s cleaning instructions illustrate that recommendations are product-specific.

Choose the cleaning method

How to spot-clean a fabric laptop backpack
- Check the care label. Look for restrictions on water, soap, scrubbing and washing. If the label gives a different method, use that instead.
- Empty the backpack. Remove the laptop, accessories and loose items. Open compartments so you can reach dirt without putting electronics at risk.
- Remove loose soil. Gently brush or wipe away dust and grit before adding water, using a soft-bristled brush if needed.
- Test and clean gently. Dampen a cloth with water and a small amount of mild soap. Dab the stain; for a stubborn mark, gently work the cloth over the affected area. Avoid aggressive scrubbing that could abrade the fabric or its finish. Eastpak recommends this approach for its bags. Eastpak
- Remove soap residue. Wipe or rinse the treated area thoroughly with clean water, following the label’s limits on wetting the bag. Eastpak recommends thorough rinsing.
- Air dry fully. Leave the bag in a ventilated place until dry inside and out. Follow any model-specific direction about whether to lay it flat or hang it.
If the whole backpack needs cleaning
Hand wash only when the manufacturer permits it. Published advice varies: Eastpak specifies cold water and gentle detergent for its bags, while Deuter describes pH-neutral soap or shower gel and brushing stains. Those are brand-specific directions, not a general instruction to immerse any fabric laptop backpack. If the label is missing and the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance cannot be found, stick to cautious spot cleaning rather than soaking the pack.

A washing machine or tumble dryer is not a safe default. Deuter warns that machine washing and tumble drying can damage a backpack’s PU coating. Rab says not to machine wash, tumble dry, dry clean or use solvents on its backpacks. Deuter; Rab

Drying and restoring water repellency
Dry the backpack completely in a ventilated place, using the position and precautions specified by its manufacturer. Eastpak says to lay its bags flat away from direct sunlight; Rab says to hang its backpacks away from direct sunlight, radiators and other heat sources. Do not substitute high heat for air drying. Reproofing is optional and depends on the product. Rab says DWR wears down over time and recommends applying a spray-on reproofer to damp fabric after washing, following the product directions. Eastpak also recommends a water-repellent product for its water-resistant bags. Before using a fabric water-repellent spray on another brand’s backpack, confirm that both the bag maker and treatment maker say it is compatible. Rab; Eastpak

Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not assume that a water-resistant backpack is machine washable or safe to tumble dry.
- Do not use solvents or dry cleaning where the manufacturer prohibits them; Rab specifically advises against both for its backpacks. Rab
- Do not apply an arbitrary cleaner or reproofer without checking compatibility with the pack’s materials and finish.
- Do not put the bag away while damp; allow it to dry completely.
