Aave V3 does not use one universal oracle address or identical price-feed setup everywhere. Configuration is tied to a particular market and reserve: the market’s AaveOracle maps each asset to a price source, may use a fallback oracle, and returns prices in that market’s base currency. To compare deployments, identify the exact market and reserve first, then inspect their live contract settings.
What “the Aave oracle” means in V3
Aave’s Oracle documentation says each reserve is associated with an oracle contract. In practice, the market-facing AaveOracle keeps a mapping from reserve asset addresses to source addresses and also exposes a fallback oracle. That makes the relevant configuration specific to the market instance and reserve—not just the network name.

Aave’s production documentation identifies Chainlink price feeds and CAPO as primary oracle contract types. Chainlink feeds provide price observations; CAPO is intended for correlated assets, such as wrapped assets whose value tracks an underlying asset. A reserve’s selected oracle is determined through Aave governance, so settings can change over time.
Which configuration details can differ?

Aave’s market-data schema also includes a reserve-level usdOracleAddress. Treat it as a useful market-data field, not as proof that it represents every source and fallback relationship in the AaveOracle contract.

How prices and fallback behavior fit together
The AaveOracle is the market-facing registry and lookup point. Its interface documents asset-source and fallback settings, while the contract reference describes the returned value as the asset price in the market’s BASE_CURRENCY. The core implementation describes Chainlink aggregators as the first source and forwarding to the fallback when an aggregator answer is nonpositive. That is implementation-specific behavior: verify the version deployed for the market rather than applying it automatically to every V3 deployment.
What changes on Layer 2?
Some L2 markets add a PriceOracleSentinel to account for sequencer health. Aave documents that borrowing can be disabled under specified conditions and that a grace period after sequencer recovery can allow positions to be made healthy. This is an operational safeguard layered around the market’s price-oracle setup; it does not mean every L2 market has an identical sentinel or sequencer-oracle address.

The sentinel’s sequencer oracle is configured through a Pool Admin-only method. For a particular market, inspect whether a sentinel is deployed and how its sequencer oracle is set before drawing conclusions about borrowing or recovery behavior.

Aave identifies governance as the process that selects reserve oracles. At the contract level, the documented setAssetSources and setFallbackOracle methods are restricted to POOL_ADMIN or ASSET_LISTING_ADMIN. Aave’s access-control documentation says deployers have resigned their POOL_ADMIN roles and describes POOL_ADMIN instances across V3 networks as governed by Guardians multisigs or Governance Bridge executors.

These are different parts of the authority picture: governance determines protocol decisions, while the contract enforces which role can call a configuration method. Do not infer current control from a role name alone; check the role holder and governance history for the market and network being examined.

- Pin down both market instances. Record network, chain ID, market name, and the exact reserve asset address. Confirm whether a deployment is, for example, Ethereum Core or Ethereum Prime rather than treating both as one Ethereum configuration.
- Read each reserve’s source. Query that market’s AaveOracle with
getSourceOfAsset(asset), then identify what the returned contract does and whether it is the source relevant to the reserve. - Inspect the fallback separately. Query
getFallbackOracle()on each market’s AaveOracle and establish the fallback behavior for that deployment. - Normalize the denomination. Check
BASE_CURRENCYand its unit before comparing price values returned by the two markets. - Check L2 controls when applicable. Inspect the PriceOracleSentinel and sequencer-oracle configuration, including the documented post-recovery grace-period behavior.
- Verify permissions and history. Identify current role holders and relevant governance actions; neither the role setup nor its history should be presumed identical across networks.
These checks establish the configuration of the specific deployments examined. A complete live matrix of all network and market oracle addresses, feed versions, heartbeat and deviation parameters, fallback settings, and sentinel settings is not established here; those mutable details require current, market-by-market contract inspection.
