Are ZTE Phones Safe to Use? Security, Updates, and Privacy Explained

ZTE phones do not have a single brand-wide safety verdict. Check the exact model’s patch date, update support, Play Protect certification, and service-specific privacy notices.

Some ZTE phones may be safe to use; the brand name alone cannot establish whether a particular phone is secure. Check the exact model and regional or carrier version, its latest Android security patch, whether updates are still available, and its Google Play Protect certification. Privacy is a separate question: ZTE’s published policies describe particular services, not everything every phone or app may collect.

Are ZTE phones safe to use?

There is no reliable brand-wide yes-or-no verdict. A ZTE phone’s practical security depends on the individual handset: its model and region or carrier variant, how recently it received a security patch, and whether ZTE or the carrier still supports it. Google Play Protect certification is another useful check, but it does not tell you whether the phone is fully patched or how long support will continue.

Historical U.S. regulatory concern should be kept in perspective. The FCC’s 2019 document discusses a designation process involving ZTE and Huawei and cites an Android carrier-device firmware evaluation published in 2018. It is not a current security audit of every ZTE consumer phone. It does not establish that all current ZTE phones are compromised or contain spyware.

How to check your ZTE phone’s security

  1. Identify the exact variant. Record the full model number, country or region, carrier, Android version, and Android security update date. Similar-looking phones may have different support arrangements.
  2. Check for system updates. On many models, open Settings → System → System update and check for available updates. Menu wording can differ by model. ZTE recommends backing up your data before upgrading. See ZTE’s update guidance and update instructions.
  3. Look up model-specific support. Use ZTE’s support portal for the relevant regional product page, guides, and available updates. If you have a carrier version, ask the carrier about its update support as well. A portal listing some older models does not prove the support status of every phone.
  4. Check Play Protect certification. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, then go to Settings → About and look for Play Protect certification. Google explains how to check and fix certification status.

These checks answer different questions. A recent patch is evidence about the phone’s update state; certification is evidence that the device passed Google’s Android compatibility testing and is eligible to include licensed Google apps such as the Play Store. Google warns that uncertified devices may not be secure and may not receive Android system or app updates. Certification itself does not prove that a handset has a current patch or will receive future support. Play Protect certification is also separate from the Play Protect feature that checks for harmful apps.

Does ZTE still update its phones, and how long do updates last?

ZTE’s support materials direct owners to model-specific pages and tell users how to check for updates, but the available official sources do not establish one current number of Android-version upgrades or years of security updates that applies to every ZTE phone. Update commitments can differ by model, region, and carrier. Do not infer one model’s support period from another’s.

For a specific handset, look for an explicit update commitment on its current ZTE product or support page and check the carrier’s information if it is a carrier variant. Distinguish a published promise from the timing of updates that have already arrived. If no commitment is stated, treat the remaining support period as unconfirmed rather than assuming a standard term.

The FTC’s 2018 report, Mobile Security Updates: Understanding the Issues, explains why update availability matters to mobile security, but it is general background—not a current ZTE update schedule. Google’s guidance about Android and Google services updates on certified devices likewise does not establish a manufacturer’s full operating-system support commitment.

What data does ZTE collect?

It depends on the service and its privacy notice. ZTE’s System Update Privacy Policy, identified as updated June 17, 2025, describes information used by the system-update service. It says that service uses a device ID (including IMEI, MEID, or serial number), product model, language, internal and external software versions, activation time, upgrade time and result, and IP address to establish an update connection. The policy says the IP address is not stored after the upgrade; describes regional storage and cross-border access from China for remote operations, fault repair, and other stated processing; and says last-upgrade information is retained for five years. These are disclosures for that service, not an independent audit or a complete account of every app’s data collection.

ZTE Care has separate disclosures. Its policies describe information used for support FAQs and after-sales queries, such as model and software-version details. An older ZTE Care policy says hardware checks may generate test videos and recordings stored locally on the handset, which can be deleted through file management; a different ZTE Care policy version may cover different services. ZTE also publishes a User Experience Improvement Program privacy policy listing device and network usage categories. Its scope should not be assumed to cover every phone: check whether the relevant program is enabled or joined, and review the current notice and permissions on your device.

What to do if your phone is uncertified or no longer updated

  • If the phone is uncertified, consult Google’s certification guidance and the seller or manufacturer before relying on Google apps or system updates. Certification status alone cannot explain every cause or remedy.
  • If no update is available, confirm the exact model and carrier variant with ZTE or the carrier. An empty update check does not, by itself, establish that support has ended.
  • If the manufacturer and carrier no longer provide security patches, weigh that against how you use the phone. Avoid treating an old patch level as current protection, and consider moving sensitive or essential tasks to a device with confirmed ongoing support.
  • Before installing an update, back up important data and use the official update route for your model. Do not assume an update will fix every security or privacy concern.
