Unplug the waffle maker and let it cool completely. Brush crumbs from the grooves with a soft-bristled brush, then wipe the plates with a soft damp cloth and dry them. Keep water away from the housing, plug and cord, and do not immerse the appliance. For baked-on batter, use only a residue-removal method allowed by the manual for your exact model.
Clean the plates with a gentle routine
- Unplug the waffle maker and let it cool fully. Waring, Oster and Oster’s flip-maker manual all advise unplugging and cooling the appliance before cleaning.
- Brush out loose crumbs. Use a soft-bristled brush to reach into the plate grooves. Waring’s Waffle Program — Cleaning & Maintenance Guide, dated April 11, 2023, says: “Only use brushes with soft bristles to avoid scratching the nonstick coating.”
- Wipe the plates. Use a soft cloth dampened with water, then dry the plates. Oster’s product advice recommends a damp-cloth wipe.
- Keep the electrical parts dry. Do not immerse the waffle maker. Avoid getting water on the housing, plug or cord; Oster and Dash instructions warn against immersing their appliances.
A soft-bristled pastry brush is an optional way to clear crumbs from the grooves. It is not a requirement: a suitable soft brush you already have will do.

Remove baked-on batter only as your model allows
Do not scrape stuck batter with a knife, metal utensil or other hard implement, and do not scrub the coating with an abrasive pad or powder. The residue methods in manufacturer guidance differ, so treat them as model-specific rather than universal.

If your manual does not give a residue-softening method, stick with gentle brushing and wiping rather than trying a cleaner or paste on the coating.

Check the manual before removing or washing plates
Plate construction and washing instructions vary. Fixed plates should not be treated like removable plates, and a removable plate is not automatically dishwasher-safe.

What to avoid on nonstick plates
- Abrasive pads, scouring powders and harsh scrubbing.
- Metal brushes, knives and other implements that can scratch the coating.
- Immersing the waffle maker or wetting the plug, cord or housing.
- Removing plates, applying detergent or using a dishwasher unless the exact model’s instructions allow it.
