Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf someone claiming to represent Social Security or Medicare pressures you to pay, reveal personal information, or move money, stop the conversation. Hang up or stop replying, do not click links or send anything, and verify the issue using contact details you find independently on SSA.gov or Medicare.gov. Caller ID, an employee name, a badge image, or an official-looking letter does not prove the contact is genuine.
Not every agency call is fake: Social Security employees may call in certain business situations, and Medicare or a plan may call in limited circumstances. If you were expecting a callback, check through an official number you locate yourself. A surprising demand for immediate payment is not made safe by a convincing story.

Warning signs of a Social Security or Medicare scam
Many government-impersonation scams follow the same pattern: the caller claims to represent a trusted organization, invents a problem or benefit, creates urgency, and tells you how to pay. Social Security’s scam guidance identifies threats and unusual payment instructions as major warning signs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Threats or deadlines: The caller says your Social Security number (SSN) or benefits will be suspended, you will be arrested, or legal action will follow unless you act immediately. Social Security says it will not suspend your SSN or threaten arrest to force immediate payment.
- Unusual payment methods: You are told to pay with gift cards, cryptocurrency, cash, a prepaid debit card, or a wire transfer—or to move money to a supposedly protected account. Social Security says it does not demand these forms of payment.
- Requests for secrecy or an in-person handoff: The caller tells you not to speak to family or asks you to hand cash or precious metals to someone.
- Unexpected requests for sensitive details: A message asks for your SSN, bank details, password, or Medicare number to prevent a supposed account problem, release a benefit, or send a replacement card.
- Offers in exchange for your Medicare number: Someone offers money, gifts, free care, or medical equipment if you provide the number. Medicare warns against these offers.
- Claims that sound official: A caller may use a real employee’s name, a fake badge or document, a spoofed phone number, or a convincing agency social-media account. None authenticates the contact.
Social Security warns that it will not ask for sensitive or personal information through social media, email, or text message. An unexpected message asking for information or payment deserves skepticism, even if it uses agency branding.

A new warning about call transfers
On July 29, 2026, the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General (SSA OIG) warned that a company or another agency cannot transfer a phone call directly to SSA or OIG. If someone says they are transferring you to either office, end the call and contact the agency yourself through its official site.
When an agency call may be legitimate
Social Security says employees may call after a recent benefit application, when an existing recipient’s record needs an update, or when the person requested a phone call. For issues with an SSN or record, SSA typically mails a letter. Medicare also describes limited legitimate calls: a plan may contact an existing member, an agent who helped someone enroll may follow up, 1-800-MEDICARE may return a call you requested, and Medicare may follow up after a suspected-fraud report.

Your Medicare card has a unique Medicare number, not your SSN. Medicare advises protecting it as carefully as a credit card. Share it with appropriate health care providers, plans, or trusted people who need it for Medicare-related work—not with an unsolicited caller, emailer, or visitor. Medicare’s fraud guidance says you should not share your number with someone who contacts you unless you gave permission in advance.

Review your Medicare notices and claims against your own records. Look for unfamiliar services, supplies, dates, or providers; contact the provider or Medicare to question a claim you do not recognize. For a claim-specific report, gather the service or item, date, amount Medicare approved and paid, the Medicare Summary Notice or claim date, and why the payment seems wrong. For a broader fraud allegation, note what happened, where and when it happened, and any supporting evidence. Do not delay urgent account protection while collecting details.
What to do during a suspicious contact
- Pause. Fear and urgency are tactics. Take time to think or consult someone you trust.
- End the contact. Hang up, stop replying, and do not follow instructions to transfer money, disclose personal or banking information, or keep the matter secret.
- Avoid links and attachments. Do not click a message link or open an unexpected attachment. Navigate to the agency site yourself.
- Verify independently. Visit SSA.gov or Medicare.gov, or use a number printed on an official card or agency material. Ask whether any action is actually needed.
- Report the attempt. Choose the route below that matches the program or type of suspected fraud.

How widespread are government-impersonation scams?
The Federal Trade Commission reported on September 25, 2026, that consumers who lost money to government-impersonation scams filed more than 375,000 reports and reported more than $900 million in losses in 2025. Those figures cover government impersonation overall—not just Social Security or Medicare scams. The FTC’s consumer education author Ari Lazarus put the rule plainly: “Never ever will someone from the government threaten to suspend your government benefits if you don’t pay immediately.”
