A line in GSTR-2B is useful evidence of supplier reporting, not proof by itself that the credit is legally available. Likewise, a missing line may reflect timing or a reporting error rather than permanent ineligibility.
How do I claim input tax credit under GST?
Assess each invoice or debit note individually before including its tax in a claim. Section 16 of the CGST Act sets out the core conditions, while section 17 and other applicable provisions restrict or apportion credit in some cases. A practical sequence is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Check the document. Confirm that you hold a valid tax invoice, debit note, or other prescribed document and that the recipient details and tax amounts are accurate.
- Confirm recipient and business use. The recipient must be registered, and the purchase must be for or intended for business. Where a purchase is partly for non-business use or relates to exempt supplies, credit may need to be apportioned.
- Confirm receipt. Verify that the goods or services were received. If goods arrive in lots or instalments, section 16 provides that credit is taken when the last lot or instalment is received.
- Check supplier reporting and return filing. Confirm that the supplier furnished the document details and that those details were communicated to the recipient, and check the recipient’s return-filing position. Use GSTR-2B as part of this check, not as a substitute for the other conditions.
- Test restrictions and payment conditions. Review blocked-credit provisions and any applicable reversal or apportionment rules. For ordinary supplier payments, also monitor the 180-day condition described below.
- Record the decision at document level. Keep the evidence and reasoning for claiming, deferring, reversing, or excluding the credit with the invoice record.
These checks are not a guarantee of eligibility: the transaction facts, the applicable CGST, IGST, or state provisions, and current rules can affect the result.

Compare the purchase register to the GSTR-2B for the relevant tax period, document by document. GSTR-2B is a static, read-only auto-drafted statement intended to help prepare GSTR-3B. The GST Portal advises taxpayers to reconcile its data with their own records and books of accounts. Its monthly statement is generated on the 14th day of the succeeding month, according to the Portal’s GSTR-2B FAQ.

| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Supplier | GSTIN and supplier name |
| Document | Invoice or debit-note number, date, and tax period |
| Amounts | Taxable value, tax split, and total tax |
| Place of supply | Record where relevant to the transaction |
| Reconciliation | Purchase-register status, GSTR-2B status, and difference amount |
| Resolution | Eligibility or reversal status, action owner, follow-up, and resolution date |
Use a controlled review: identify the type of difference, locate its source, determine whether it affects eligibility or only reporting visibility, and document the resolution. Do not change a return simply to force the figures to match.

Why is an invoice missing from GSTR-2B?
A supplier may have furnished details after the applicable statement cut-off, so the document may appear in a later open GSTR-2B. Check the relevant period and supplier filing status before treating an omission as permanent. Do not claim the same document in two periods. If details are missing or inaccurate, ask the supplier to furnish or correct them where appropriate and retain the correspondence and any correction details.

What should I do if the ITC amount does not match?
Compare the source documents and books with the statement, then decide whether the issue is a timing difference, a data error, an adjustment, or a substantive eligibility concern. The table gives a practical way to distinguish common cases.
| What you find | What to investigate | Appropriate next step |
|---|---|---|
| Invoice absent from GSTR-2B | Supplier filing status and the statement cut-off | Follow up with the supplier where needed, monitor a later open statement, and retain evidence. Avoid a duplicate claim if the document subsequently appears. |
| Invoice details differ | GSTIN, invoice number and date, taxable value, tax amount, and amendments | Compare the original document with the purchase entry and supplier filing. Correct the recipient’s books if they are wrong; request supplier-side correction if the reporting is wrong. |
| Credit note or amendment changes the amount | The original invoice and every related adjustment document | Reconcile the documents together and calculate the net position; do not treat the original and amended amounts as separate credit. |
| Statement says credit is not available or is restricted | The stated reason and the underlying legal facts | Review the status, then independently assess eligibility. The Portal’s not-available status covers specified cases, including the section 16(4) time bar and certain place-of-supply mismatches; it does not identify every possible legal restriction. |
| Reverse-charge entry appears | Whether the inward supply is liable to reverse charge and how it is reported | Keep reverse-charge tax distinct from ordinary supplier-tax ITC. The Portal advises that reverse-charge tax must be paid and maps certain values into GSTR-3B; follow the applicable return treatment. |
| Figures match, but the purchase may not qualify | Receipt, business use, exempt or non-business use, blocked-credit rules, duplicate claims, and payment conditions | Exclude, apportion, or reverse credit as required by the applicable provisions, even if GSTR-2B shows the document. |
Invoice-number capture and other manual recording differences can cause matching problems; GST Portal e-invoicing guidance identifies such differences as an issue to investigate. The source documents and supplier filing determine whether the fix belongs in the recipient’s books or in the supplier’s reporting.

How should I report eligible ITC and required reversals?
Use the relevant GSTR-2B to inform the appropriate GSTR-3B fields, then self-assess the amount to report. GSTR-2B is read-only, while system-populated GSTR-3B fields are editable. An auto-populated amount is therefore not a legal conclusion and should not be accepted without the document-level checks above.

Retain an auditable record containing the source invoice or debit note, evidence of receipt, books entry, GSTR-2B comparison, supplier correspondence and correction details, working for any apportionment or reversal and re-availment, and the filed return. This trail helps explain both the amount reported and the decision behind it.
What is the last date to claim ITC?
Under the general rule in section 16(4) of the CGST Act, ITC for an invoice or debit note cannot be taken after 30 November following the end of the relevant financial year, or after furnishing the relevant annual return, whichever is earlier. This is a general rule, not a universal deadline for every circumstance; check the current law and any applicable special provisions for the transaction and financial year.
Do not leave the review until the end of November. Schedule a year-end check early enough to identify missing supplier reporting, obtain corrections, verify receipt and eligibility, and resolve book-to-statement differences before the applicable deadline.
When can unpaid invoices require an ITC reversal?
Section 16(2) contains a 180-day condition for payment to the supplier, other than for reverse-charge supplies. Where the value of the supply plus tax remains unpaid beyond that period, the Act provides for payment of an amount equal to the ITC availed, with applicable interest, in the prescribed manner. The credit can be availed again when payment is made to the supplier.
Track payment status alongside the reconciliation rather than treating a matched invoice as settled for ITC purposes. Confirm the applicable rule and facts before calculating a reversal or later re-availment.
