Some PS4 games load faster or run more smoothly on a PS5, but playing on PS5 does not automatically turn a PS4 game into a higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate version. The result depends on whether you are running the PS4 version through backward compatibility, installing a distinct PS5 upgrade, or playing a game enhanced for PS5 Pro. The game and your display also have to support the features you want to use.
What “playing on PS5” can mean
There are three different software paths, and their benefits are not interchangeable:

- PS4 game through backward compatibility: The game remains its PS4 version. Select titles may load faster or benefit from automatic Game Boost, which can improve or stabilize frame rates. A game with an unlocked frame rate or dynamic resolution may also reach higher performance or image quality, but results vary by title. Sony’s PlayStation ecosystem guidance describes these as benefits for select games, not a guarantee for every PS4 title.
- Distinct PS5 version: An eligible PS4 game may offer a separate PS5 version. Its developer can add changes such as a higher frame rate, 4K visuals, faster loading, or other PS5 features. The upgrade and its specific improvements are game-dependent.
- PS5 Pro enhancement: Game Boost may improve performance in some PS4 and PS5 games. Separately, games designated as PS5 Pro compatible can take advantage of features such as ray tracing and PSSR-assisted image quality. Compatibility and implementation vary by game.
In short, a faster console can help a compatible game, but the label “PS5 upgrade” alone does not tell you exactly what will change. Check the game’s version details and supported modes.
What can change: loading, resolution, and frame rate
Loading
Some PS4 games load faster on PS5, according to Sony. A native PS5 version may also include developer-made loading improvements. Neither is a stated loading-time guarantee for every game.

Frame rate
Game Boost is automatic for PS4 games on PS5; there is no Boost Mode switch to enable. Sony says it may improve or stabilize frame rates in select titles. A PS5 version may have a developer-set higher frame-rate option, but the game’s implementation determines the result.
Resolution and image quality
Some PS4 games with dynamic resolution may deliver higher image quality on PS5, while a native PS5 version may add 4K visuals or other rendering improvements. Those outcomes are title-specific. A console output setting can select a supported signal, but it cannot make a game render at a resolution or quality level that the game does not provide.

Ray tracing and PSSR on PS5 Pro
Sony describes PS5 Pro-compatible games as capable of running at 60 fps, or up to 120 fps, with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K resolution using PSSR. This is a capability statement about compatible games, not a promise that every compatible title reaches those targets or combines every feature in the same way. For an individual game, consult its current feature information and supported modes.

How to compare graphics modes in a game
There is no universal set of graphics modes shared across PS5 games. Where a game offers a choice, compare the options it actually lists rather than relying on labels such as “Performance” or “Fidelity” alone. Look for:
Rank #3
- 🚀 CPU: 3.5GHz, 8-core AMD Zen 2
- 🚀 Storage: Custom 825GB SSD
- 🚀 RAM: 16GB GDDR6
- 🚀 GPU: 10.3 teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
- The stated resolution or image-quality target.
- The frame-rate target, and whether it is fixed or variable if the game specifies that.
- Whether ray tracing or other visual effects are included.
- Any trade-off the game identifies between visual detail and performance.
Sony’s examples include games that separate performance-focused and graphics-focused choices, as well as games that combine visual features with high frame-rate targets. Those examples are not a standard mode template. If you are comparing PS5 with PS5 Pro, compare the same game’s available modes and enhancements; platform-level capability claims alone do not establish a measured gain for that title.
What you need from your TV or monitor
The display has to support the output you want, and the game must support it too. Sony says 120 Hz output applies to supported games and displays. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) also depends on compatible equipment and game support. Changing the PS5’s output settings cannot raise a game’s own rendering frame rate.
Rank #4
- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
For resolution settings, use Sony’s PS5 resolution guide. For PS5 Pro’s PS4 image-quality enhancement feature, see Sony’s support instructions. A compatible 4K, 120 Hz display with VRR can expose features when the console and game support them; it does not independently improve a game’s rendering.
How to check and install an eligible PS5 upgrade
- Find the offer: Open the game’s hub or look up the game in PlayStation Store, then check whether an eligible PS5 upgrade offer appears. Offers and prices vary by title and can change, so verify the current listing in your region.
- Check your copy and console: For an eligible disc-based upgrade, you need a PS5 with a disc drive. A digital PS4 game can be upgraded when an eligible offer is available. PlayStation Plus games are not eligible unless Sony indicates otherwise.
- Download the PS5 version: Select the upgrade offer and download the distinct PS5 version. The upgrade may be free or paid; do not assume either without checking the offer.
- Keep the disc available if required: If you upgraded from a PS4 disc, insert that disc whenever you play the downloaded PS5 digital version.
- Select the version you want: If both versions are available, use the game library’s version selector to choose which version to download or play.
Sony’s Games Support page provides support links for game and upgrade questions. The linked pages are US English; offers, prices, and catalog availability may differ in other regions.

What to expect from PS5 Pro—and what not to assume
PS5 Pro features are not a blanket upgrade applied equally to every game. Some PS4 and PS5 games may benefit from Game Boost; PS5 Pro-compatible games can have additional developer-supported enhancements. Sony’s stated targets describe what compatible games can do, not a universal frame-rate, resolution, or percentage increase.
Official feature descriptions establish platform capabilities and compatibility conditions, but they are not independent, title-by-title benchmark results. To judge a specific game, check its current official details or reliable testing of that title rather than extrapolating from a console-wide maximum.
