To keep a paid Steam game permanently, claim it while the store page shows a Free to Keep promotion (a 100% discount). Completing that free acquisition gives your account a permanent license. You do not have to download the game during the promotion.
A Free Weekend is only temporary access, and installing a game does not change that. A Free to Play title is a different category that remains free to download and play, although it may offer optional purchases.

What “free” means on Steam
Steam uses several kinds of free offers that look similar on a store page but create different rights for your account. The important question is not whether the download costs zero today; it is whether Steam grants a permanent license or merely enables access for a limited time.

Valve’s Steamworks Documentation defines a Free to Keep promotion as a time-limited promotion that lets a player permanently acquire a game license for free. The same documentation defines a Free Weekend as temporary access. Steam Support describes free-to-play games as downloadable and playable without a subscription or credit card, while noting that optional in-game purchases may use Steam Wallet funds.

How to claim a Free to Keep game
Use the game’s official Steam store page and verify the offer before you click anything. The following process separates the permanent license step from the optional download.
- Open the official store page while the promotion is active. Use the page for the exact game, not a third-party listing or an old deal post. Promotions can close while a page is still being shared elsewhere.
- Read the offer label and deadline. Look for “Free to Keep,” a 100% discount, or equivalent wording that says the game can be acquired permanently. Note the countdown or end time shown on the page. Do not assume that a zero-price button means permanent ownership.
- Rule out a Free Weekend or timed trial. If the page says “Free Weekend,” “play for free this weekend,” or otherwise describes temporary access, it is not a permanent claim. Stop and confirm the wording before proceeding.
- Complete the free acquisition action. Follow the store page’s button flow to add the game or license to your account. The decisive event is Steam granting the license package, not the start of a download.
- Confirm the result in your Library. Open the Steam Library and search for the title. A library entry alone is not enough if the page identified a Free Weekend, so retain the offer wording or a note of the claim date when you are tracking several promotions.
- Install now or later. Downloading during the promotion is optional. Once the permanent license is attached to your account, you can install it later whenever Steam makes that license available to the account.
Why the deadline matters
A Free to Keep promotion is time-limited. When it closes, Steam automatically removes the free promotional package from the store page. A claim completed before the deadline remains associated with the account; a visit after the deadline cannot retroactively create that license.
Why downloading is not the claim
Large games can take hours to download, and a limited-time event may end while the files are still transferring. Start the acquisition first and wait for confirmation that the title was added to your account. The files can be downloaded later, provided the license is present.

- Return to the title’s Library entry after completing the free acquisition.
- Check that the store page’s offer was identified as Free to Keep or a 100% discount, not Free Weekend.
- Record the title and date you claimed it if you maintain a promotion log.
- Do not use installation status as proof. A game can be installed during a temporary event and still lose play access when the event ends.
If the promotional banner disappears later, that is expected for a completed Free to Keep claim. The store package was time-limited; the account license you acquired is the lasting part.
Finding permanently free games
Use Steam’s Free To Play catalog
For games that are normally free, Steam Support directs users to the Steam Store’s Free to Play list. The catalog is the appropriate starting point when you want an ongoing free title rather than a short promotion. These games can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card, although individual games may sell cosmetic items, expansions, currency, or other optional content.
Free-to-play status does not mean every feature is free or that the game has no separate account requirements. Read the individual store page for its own online-service and purchase rules.
Watch for limited-time Free to Keep events
Free to Keep promotions are less consistently discoverable because Steam’s documentation says they are not promoted in a dedicated store location by default. Deal reporting, community alerts, and official announcements can help you notice an event, but the Steam store page is the authority for the actual offer. Always verify the label and deadline there before claiming.
A shared headline that says “free on Steam” may refer to a Free Weekend, a free-to-play release, a demo, or a 100% discount. Treat the headline as a lead, then classify the offer on Steam itself.

What happens after each type of offer ends
After a Free to Keep promotion
If you completed the acquisition before the deadline, the permanent license remains attached to your account even though the free package is no longer shown on the store page. You can find the title in your Library and install it later when Steam offers the license to your account.
After a Free Weekend
Steam describes a Free Weekend as temporary access. When the event ends, the title may still appear in your Library, but that listing does not grant ongoing play. You can uninstall it, or buy the full version if you want to continue. Installing during the weekend never converts the trial into a permanent license.
After choosing a Free to Play title
A free-to-play game is not a limited promotion. It remains downloadable and playable under the game’s current rules. Optional purchases are separate transactions and are not required merely to download the game.
Common situations and the correct response
“The game says Play, so I must own it.”
Not necessarily. A Play or Install button can appear because you have temporary access, a previously installed trial, or a free-to-play entitlement. Check the offer description and your acquisition history rather than inferring license duration from the button.

“I installed it before the countdown ended. Is that enough?”
No. Installation only copies files to your device. For permanent ownership, you must complete the free acquisition that grants the license before the promotion closes.
“The game is still in my Library after the weekend.”
A lingering Library entry is compatible with a Free Weekend. Steam says the title may remain listed while play access is restricted to owners who buy the full version. The original event label determines whether you received a permanent license.

If you claimed a documented Free to Keep offer before it ended, the disappearance is normal: Steam removes the promotional package from the store page. If you never completed the acquisition, the ended promotion cannot be claimed afterward.
“A deal post calls it free, but Steam shows a different label.”
Follow the Steam page. A third-party description may be outdated, region-specific, or referring to a Free Weekend. Do not treat a zero-price download as permanent until Steam identifies the offer as Free to Keep or a 100% discount.

- Open the store page directly. Do not rely on a search snippet, social post, or notification that may outlive the promotion.
- Read the complete banner. Look for the words Free to Keep or an explicit 100% discount and inspect the end time.
- Claim before downloading. The license transaction is the priority; the download can wait.
- Check the Library immediately. Confirm the title appears under the account you intended to use.
- Keep a simple log. A title, claim date, and the offer type make it easier to distinguish permanent claims from trials months later.
- Separate optional spending from ownership. A free-to-play game may advertise paid items, but those purchases do not define whether the base game is free.
A practical decision framework
When you encounter any “free Steam game” promotion, answer these questions in order:
- Is this a normal free-to-play product? If yes, it is an ongoing free download and play option, subject to the game’s own rules.
- Does Steam explicitly say Free to Keep or show a 100% discount? If yes, complete the acquisition before the deadline to receive the permanent license.
- Does Steam say Free Weekend or temporary access? If yes, you are evaluating a trial. Install it to test the game, but do not expect permanent play rights without a purchase.
- Have you completed the account action? If you only downloaded or launched the game, return to the store page and finish the acquisition while the offer remains active.
This sequence resolves the most common ambiguity: “free” describes the current price, while the offer label describes how long your right to play lasts.

Limits of what can be promised
Steam’s definitions establish the difference between a permanent Free to Keep license, temporary Free Weekend access, and ongoing free-to-play availability. They do not provide a universal count of how many Free to Keep promotions exist, how often a particular game will be offered, or a guarantee that every historical promotion will return. Avoid lists that imply a fixed number of giveaways or a recurring schedule unless Steam states one for that specific event.
