On Xbox Series X|S, sign in with an eligible Microsoft account, open the Xbox Store, choose Subscriptions, and select the Free Play Days collection. Open the game’s listing and start the install or play flow before the end time shown for that event.
Free Play Days is a time-limited trial, not a permanent license. Downloading a game does not let you keep playing after the event closes. To continue, purchase the game before the trial or catalog entitlement ends, unless your account already has another valid license.

What Free Play Days actually gives you
Free Play Days is Xbox’s limited-time game-trial program. The official Xbox description says that Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members can try selected games free for a limited period. The offer applies to the specific titles and dates shown in the current Free Play Days listing; it is not a permanent benefit for every game in the Xbox catalog.

There are two separate limits to understand:
- Event limit: the selected game is playable only until the Free Play Days end time displayed for that event.
- License limit: installing the game grants temporary access. It does not grant ownership or create a perpetual digital license.
The listing for your account and market is the authority for the game, required membership, supported platform, region and closing time. A title that appears for one account, country or plan may not appear for another.

Check eligibility before you start
Xbox’s 2026 Game Pass page identifies three relevant tiers. The game counts below are publisher figures, not fixed guarantees: Xbox says titles, features and availability change by time, region, plan and platform.

Do not infer a particular game, discount, price or end time from the tier name alone. Open the live listing while signed in and confirm that your membership is accepted for that title. If the page shows a different requirement, the title-specific requirement controls.
What you need on the console
- An Xbox Series X or Series S connected to the internet.
- The Microsoft account that holds the eligible Game Pass membership.
- Enough console storage for the game if you choose to install it.
- A current Free Play Days event that includes the title and supports Xbox Series X|S.
Storage capacity and download time are not the same as eligibility. A large game may still be available to try, while a small game may be unavailable in your region or plan.

How to claim the game on Xbox Series X|S
- Sign in to the correct account. Use the Microsoft account with the eligible Essential, Premium or Ultimate membership. If several people use the console, check the profile shown before opening the store; claiming with a different profile can make the offer appear unavailable.
- Open the Xbox Store. Go to the store on the Series X|S and open its Subscriptions tab. Xbox Wire’s console instructions place Free Play Days under this tab on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
- Open the Free Play Days collection. Navigate down to the Free Play Days collection. The collection is event-based, so its contents can change when one weekend or promotional window ends and another begins.
- Select the game. Read the title page rather than relying only on the collection tile. Confirm the displayed end time, required Game Pass tier, Xbox Series X|S support and any regional or platform qualification shown there.
- Begin the install or play flow before the deadline. Choose the available install or play action while the event is still open. Starting the flow before the displayed closing time is the practical point at which you claim the temporary trial access.
- Let the install finish if you want offline convenience later in the event. The deadline does not move while the game downloads. A slow connection can consume much of the trial window, so start early enough to leave time to play.
- Launch the game while the offer is active. If the title is already installed, open it from the console and verify that the trial starts under the same account that claimed it. If the game instead asks you to buy it, recheck the account, membership and event end time.
The exact button text can vary with the game and the current store layout. The stable navigation is Subscriptions → Free Play Days; the title page then determines whether you install or start playing.

How to read the end time correctly
Every event has a closing time shown in its live listing. Treat that timestamp as a hard cutoff for the temporary entitlement. Do not assume that beginning a session shortly before the deadline gives you a full additional play period, and do not assume a download that is still in progress will extend access after the event closes.
Record the date and time displayed on the title page when you start. If the store identifies a time zone, use that context rather than converting the number yourself. Listings can be different across markets, and Xbox states that availability varies by region.
If the game is important to you, finish the session or complete the purchase before the displayed deadline. The safest approach is to start the download well before the final day instead of treating the closing hour as extra play time.

A Free Play Days download is an access entitlement tied to the event. The game files may remain on the console after the event, but the license check can still prevent the game from launching when the trial closes. Keeping the files installed does not keep the right to play.

Deleting and reinstalling the title cannot reset the event clock. Signing out and back in cannot create a new trial, and moving the installation to another console does not turn it into a purchase. Access remains governed by the account, plan, platform and dates in the live offer.
Ownership is different: a purchase attaches a lasting license to the purchasing account, subject to the normal Xbox license terms. If the account already owns the game through another valid license, that existing entitlement can allow continued play after Free Play Days ends.
How to keep playing after Free Play Days ends
Buy before the trial closes
Open the game’s store page while the Free Play Days event is still active and complete the purchase before the displayed end time. Buying before the cutoff is the straightforward way to convert a temporary trial into an owned game. Check that the purchase is made on the account you intend to use for future play.

Some games are also available through a Game Pass catalog. A Free Play Days event and a catalog listing are separate entitlements, so verify the title’s current status rather than assuming one continues when the other ends. If the game remains in a catalog available to your plan, that active catalog entitlement may provide continued access; if it leaves, access can stop even though the game is still installed.

Watch for a catalog departure notice
Xbox’s guidance for games leaving the Game Pass catalog says that such titles exit within the next two weeks and advises members to buy now, with savings of up to 20% through the member discount. That statement applies to the specific departure notice and its current terms; it is not a guaranteed discount for every Free Play Days game. Confirm the price, discount and expiration date on the live store page.
Use an existing valid license
If you purchased the game previously or your account received it through another valid license, you do not need to buy it again merely because a Free Play Days trial ended. Sign in to the account that owns that license. A different family member’s purchase or a different Microsoft account is not automatically your account’s license.
Compare an offer before deciding whether to buy
When several games appear in Free Play Days, compare the details that determine whether a trial is useful and whether a purchase is worthwhile. Exact prices and dates are not stated until you open the current listing for your market.

Three common situations
The title is trial-only for your account
You see the game in Free Play Days, but the title page does not show an ongoing catalog entitlement for your plan. Install and play before the event deadline. If you want to continue, purchase it before the trial closes. Once the event ends, the installed files alone are not enough.

The title is also leaving Game Pass
You can play during Free Play Days, but the catalog page warns that the game is leaving within the next two weeks. Treat the earlier of the relevant deadlines as your decision point. Review the member discount shown by Xbox, then buy before the applicable entitlement ends if you want uninterrupted access.
You already own the game
The Free Play Days listing may still appear even though your account has another license. Launch using the owning account. The trial window does not replace or shorten a valid purchase license, but switching to an account that does not own the game can produce a purchase prompt.
What to do when the collection or install option is missing
The Free Play Days collection is not visible
- Confirm that the console is online and that you are signed in to the account with the eligible membership.
- Return to the Xbox Store’s Subscriptions tab and look specifically for the Free Play Days collection.
- Check the live event dates. The previous event may have ended, or the next collection may not yet be available.
- Verify your store region. Xbox lists regional variation as a normal condition of Game Pass titles and features.
- Check the title on the store directly if you have its name; a game can be absent because it is not offered for your plan or Series X|S.
The game page asks you to purchase
A purchase prompt can mean that the event has ended, your account is not eligible, the title is not included for your tier, or you are signed in with an account that lacks the entitlement. Compare the account and membership shown on the console with the details on the live listing before paying.
The download completed but the game is locked
This is consistent with a trial ending. The files can remain installed while the temporary license is no longer valid. Check the event deadline first, then look for a purchase option or launch the title from an account that already owns it.
The game works on another device but not the Series X|S
Do not assume that a listing for another platform carries over automatically. Confirm that the title page explicitly supports Xbox Series X|S and that the offer is available in your market and membership tier.
A deadline-safe checklist
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that holds Essential, Premium or Ultimate.
- Open Xbox Store → Subscriptions → Free Play Days.
- Open the individual title page and read its eligibility, platform, region and end time.
- Start the install or play flow before the displayed deadline.
- Allow enough time for the download if you intend to play during the event.
- Before the event closes, decide whether you will purchase the game, rely on another active catalog entitlement or stop playing.
- If the title is leaving Game Pass, check the departure notice and any member discount before that entitlement ends.
The practical answer
To claim a free Series X|S game, use the eligible account’s Xbox Store, open Subscriptions, enter Free Play Days, choose the title and begin the install or play flow before the listing’s closing time. The trial is temporary: downloading it is not ownership. Continued play requires a purchase, another valid license or an active catalog entitlement that still includes the game. Because Xbox changes titles, prices, tiers, regions and dates, always make the final decision from the live listing for your account.
