Open the DLC’s live Steam Store page before the displayed deadline, confirm that the price is genuinely £0/$0 rather than a discount, demo or Free Weekend, and select the page’s claim or add-to-account control while signed in to the correct Steam account. Then open the base game in your Library, use its DLC management screen to install the item, and verify that Steam shows it as owned and installed. The important cutoff is claiming the license; downloading the files is a separate step.
What “free limited-time DLC” means on Steam
A limited-time free-DLC promotion gives you downloadable content at no charge only during the window shown on the item’s Steam Store page. If you successfully add the DLC to your Steam account while that offer is active, it becomes part of your game license rather than a temporary trial. You may then install it from Steam’s Library controls and use it whenever the base game and the DLC remain supported on your account.

Steam also uses similar wording for promotions that are not permanent ownership. Check these four facts before claiming:

Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Steam as supporting both free and paid DLC that can be registered with a CD key or purchased through the Steam store. Once DLC is owned, Steam treats it as part of the game, updates it automatically and installs it when the game itself is installed. You still need to check the Library’s DLC controls when an item is listed but not downloaded.

Check the offer before the clock runs out
Open the current Store page
Use the promotion’s direct link or search Steam for the exact DLC title, then open the live Store listing. Do not rely on an old article, a cached search result or a social-media post: limited-time prices and end times can change. The Store page is the authoritative place to see whether the promotion is still active.
Confirm that the price is actually zero
Read the purchase panel and the surrounding wording. A genuine free-to-keep offer normally shows a zero price and a control such as Add to Account, Claim or Install. A percentage discount still requires a purchase. A demo provides limited gameplay rather than a DLC license. A Free Weekend provides temporary access and should not be described as free-to-keep DLC.
Record the exact deadline
Note the date and time displayed on the Store page, including its time-zone context if Steam supplies one. “Ends today” is not precise enough when you are close to the cutoff. Promotions are specific to their published window, and the displayed end time can be changed by the publisher or Valve. Claim early rather than waiting for the final minutes.
Check account and base-game requirements
- Sign in to the Steam account that should permanently own the DLC. Claiming while signed into another account will not transfer the license later.
- Read the listing for a required base game, edition, region or other eligibility condition. The DLC may be free while still requiring ownership of the parent game.
- Make sure Steam is online enough to complete the account transaction. A page that displays a zero price is not proof that the claim finished; you need a successful confirmation in Steam.
How to claim the DLC step by step
- Open the live listing while the promotion is active. Navigate to the DLC’s Steam Store page and remain signed in to the intended account.
- Inspect the price and wording. Confirm that the item is free, not merely discounted, and that it is identified as DLC rather than a demo or a temporary Free Weekend package.
- Read and save the deadline. Use the exact date and time shown on that page. If the page has already changed to a paid price or no longer displays the promotional control, treat the offer as ended or changed.
- Select the available claim control. Steam may label it Claim, Add to Account, Play or Install, depending on how the publisher configured the item. Follow the on-screen confirmation until Steam reports that the content was added or begins installation.
- Wait for the transaction to finish. Do not close Steam at the first click if a confirmation, queue entry or download prompt is still pending. A completed claim should be reflected in the account’s Library or the game’s DLC list.
- Open the base game in Library. Select the game associated with the DLC. If the listing required ownership of a particular edition, use that exact game entry rather than a similarly named title.
- Open DLC management. Steam Support documents the path as Library, right-click the game, Properties, then DLC. On the game’s Library page, the gear icon or a dedicated DLC section may provide the same controls.
- Enable or install the item. If the DLC appears in the list but is unchecked or marked as not installed, enable it and allow Steam to download the files. Keep Steam running until the download queue reports completion.
- Launch the game and check its content. Some DLC adds a menu, map, quest, character, cosmetic item or other in-game feature that appears only after the game restarts. Follow any publisher-specific activation instructions shown on the Store page.
Claimed, installed and available are different states
Many apparent failures come from treating ownership and installation as the same event. Use the following sequence when checking your result:

Steam’s documentation says that owned DLC is normally installed with the game and receives automatic updates. The DLC tab remains useful when the game was already installed before you claimed the offer, when an automatic download was paused, or when you want to verify exactly which packages are enabled.
How to find Steam DLC after claiming it
Use the Library DLC tab
In Library, select the base game, open the gear menu or right-click the title, choose Properties, and select DLC. The list should identify the claimed item and show whether it is installed. If a checkbox is available, select it and close the Properties window so Steam can queue the download.
Check the game’s own menus
Not every DLC announces itself with a separate desktop shortcut. An expansion may add a campaign selector; a character pack may appear in a roster; a cosmetic pack may be available in an inventory or customization screen. Restart the game after installation if the new content does not appear immediately.
Locate soundtracks, artbooks and other extras
Bonus content can be delivered as files rather than an in-game feature. Open the game’s Properties, choose Local Files, then Browse. Look for the folder or file type associated with the bonus, such as audio files, a PDF artbook or image files. The exact folder name varies by game, so use the DLC title and file extensions as clues.

Do you have to install the DLC before the deadline?
The promotion’s deadline determines whether you can add the free license to your account. Claiming the item before that deadline is the essential step. Installation is a separate local download. If Steam has recorded the DLC as owned, you can normally install it later from the game’s DLC controls, even after the Store promotion has ended. That does not rescue an uncompleted claim: if the transaction never finished before the offer changed, Steam has no reason to grant the promotional license retroactively.
For safety, claim first and start the download immediately. This gives Steam time to complete an account confirmation, exposes any base-game requirement while the offer is still visible, and avoids losing the item because of a paused queue or an offline client.
Free Weekend access is not free-to-keep DLC
Valve defines a Free Weekend as a time-limited promotion that lets players temporarily access and play an eligible game for free. It is a temporary game package, not a permanent DLC license. When the event ends, Steam removes the free package from the Store page. Participants may retain the game’s Library listing, but they can generally only uninstall it unless they buy the full version.

- If the page identifies a DLC item, shows a zero price and lets you add it to your account, follow the DLC claiming procedure.
- If the page invites you to play the complete game during a named weekend or event, treat it as temporary access.
- If the page shows a sale percentage or a purchase price, it is a paid transaction, even if the amount is heavily reduced.
- If the page offers a demo, expect a limited sample rather than ownership of the full game or its DLC.
Troubleshooting when the DLC is missing
The Store page is no longer free
Refresh the page and check the displayed date and time. If the zero price or claim control has disappeared, the promotion may have ended or been changed. Do not assume that an old announcement guarantees eligibility, and do not expect Steam to apply the offer retroactively.

The claim succeeded, but the DLC is absent from Library
First verify that the Store and Library are using the same Steam account. Then refresh Library, restart the Steam client if necessary, reopen the game’s Properties and select DLC. Confirm that you are viewing the base game named by the DLC listing, not a separate edition or similarly titled entry.
The DLC is listed but will not install
In the DLC tab, enable the item and watch the download queue. A paused, offline or interrupted queue can leave the license present while the files are missing. Resume the download, wait for Steam to report completion, and reopen the DLC tab to confirm the installed state.
The base game requirement is not met
Some DLC cannot be used without ownership of the associated game or edition. Re-read the Store page’s requirements and check that the required title is in the same account’s Library. Claiming a free add-on does not bypass a separate base-game requirement.
The files are installed, but no new content appears
Close and relaunch the game after installation. Look in the menu or mode named by the DLC listing; new content may not be added to an existing save automatically. For soundtracks, artbooks and other bonus files, use Properties > Local Files > Browse rather than searching only inside the game.
You claimed the item on the wrong account
Steam licenses are tied to the account that completed the transaction. Sign into that account to confirm ownership. There is no general mechanism for moving a claimed DLC license to a different account, so check the account name before pressing the claim button.
What to do after the promotion ends
If the DLC was successfully claimed, leave it in your account and install it later through Library when convenient. Steam normally treats owned DLC as part of the game, updates it automatically and makes it available whenever the game is installed. If you only saw a Free Weekend listing or never completed the zero-price claim, the end of the event removes the temporary entitlement; purchasing the game or DLC is then the remaining route to access.
Keep a record of the game and DLC names if you claim several promotions at once. When you reinstall the base game in the future, open its DLC tab to confirm that the claimed package is selected. This is also the quickest way to distinguish a missing download from a missing license.
