Claim the monthly PlayStation Plus game before the calendar month ends. On PS5, open Games home screen → PlayStation Plus → Benefits → Monthly Games, select the title and choose Download. On PS4, open Function screen → PlayStation Plus → Monthly Games, select the title, choose Add to Library, then download it. You can start a download later; the important preservation step is redeeming the monthly game to your PlayStation Network account while your membership is active.
This rule applies to monthly games, not every game shown in PlayStation Plus. Extra members receive the rotating Game Catalog, and Premium members also receive the Classics Catalog. Those catalog titles are temporary service access: downloading one does not create a permanent license.

What you must do before a PS Plus game leaves
PlayStation Plus monthly games are offered for a specific calendar month. When Sony replaces that month’s lineup, the claim period for those titles ends. To keep the entitlement associated with your account, open the monthly-games section and redeem each title before the changeover.

You can install the game days or weeks later, provided your membership is active.

- Claim the monthly title while it is listed in the current month’s lineup.
- Confirm that it appears in your Game Library or has begun downloading.
- Install it immediately or return to it later.
- Keep an active PlayStation Plus membership to retain the ability to play redeemed monthly games.
Monthly games and Game Catalog games are different
The most common mistake is treating every PS Plus download as a permanent claim. PlayStation Plus has separate benefits with different license rules.

Sony describes catalog access as temporary: when content is no longer offered on PlayStation Plus, you cannot access that title through the service. A catalog download is therefore an installation convenience, not a purchase.
Claim a monthly game on PS5
Use the PS5’s PlayStation Plus hub to redeem the current monthly lineup.
- From the PS5 Games home screen, scroll right to PlayStation Plus.
- Open the Benefits tab.
- Choose Monthly Games.
- Highlight the game you want before the lineup changes.
- Select Download.
The download command starts installation and records the monthly-game entitlement on the signed-in account. If you do not want to use storage immediately, you can stop after confirming the title has been added to your library, then install it later from Game Library.

Check the account before claiming
Make sure the PS5 is signed in to the PSN account that holds your PlayStation Plus membership. A claim made on a different account will not transfer to the account you normally use. If several people use the console, read the account name shown in the system interface before selecting the game.
Claim a monthly game on PS4
PS4 uses a slightly different path and exposes the library-preservation action explicitly.
- Open the PS4 function screen.
- Scroll right and select PlayStation Plus.
- Choose Monthly Games.
- Highlight the title before the monthly lineup changes.
- Select Add to Library.
- Choose Download if you want to install it immediately.
Add to Library is the critical step. Downloading is optional at that moment; the game can be installed later from your library while your membership remains active.

Claim or download remotely from the web or PlayStation App
PlayStation supports starting monthly-game downloads remotely through a web browser or the PlayStation App. This is useful when a lineup is about to change and you are away from the console.

- Sign in to the web PlayStation Store or the PlayStation App with the PSN account that has the active Plus membership.
- Open the current PlayStation Plus monthly-games offer.
- Select the title you want to preserve and complete the account’s claim or library action.
- Use the available remote-download control to send the installation to your linked PS5 or PS4, or leave the title in your library for a later console download.
The exact screen arrangement can differ between the web store and app versions, but the outcome to verify is the same: the title is associated with your account before the monthly offer expires. If a remote download is not convenient, completing the library claim is enough for a monthly game.
What happens after you claim a monthly game?
You can download it later
A monthly game’s claim and its installation are separate practical steps. The entitlement is recorded when you redeem the offer. You can then find the game in Game Library and download it when you have enough storage, a faster connection or time to play.
You need an active membership to play
Sony’s published wording is that previously redeemed PlayStation Plus games remain part of your library “as long as you are a PlayStation Plus member.” If the membership expires, the game may remain listed, but the Plus license does not provide play access while the account is inactive. Restoring an eligible membership re-establishes the condition Sony specifies for access.
The monthly lineup can change while your download is pending
If you redeemed the game before the deadline, a later lineup change does not erase that monthly entitlement. If you only intended to download it but never completed the claim, the title can disappear when the offer ends and may no longer be available through the monthly-games page.

How Game Catalog removals work
Extra and Premium subscribers often see a Download button for Game Catalog titles and assume the installed copy is theirs permanently. It is not. Catalog games are licensed as part of the service, and the service controls whether each title remains available.
- While a catalog game is offered, select it from PlayStation Plus → Benefits → Game Catalog on PS5, or PlayStation Plus → Game Catalog on PS4.
- Choose Download, or use streaming when that title and your membership support it.
- Watch the title’s service-removal notice. Installation does not change the removal date.
- If Sony removes the game, access through PlayStation Plus stops, even if the game remains installed on the console.
Sony explains that, like the former PlayStation Now model, content that is no longer offered on PlayStation Plus cannot be accessed when it leaves the service. To continue playing after removal, the practical choices are to buy the game separately or wait to see whether Sony brings it back. Sony does not promise a return schedule.
Monthly game versus catalog example
Suppose you redeem a monthly game on the final day it is offered but postpone the download. You can install it from your library later while subscribed. If, instead, you download a Game Catalog game on that same day and Sony removes it the next day, the installed copy can become inaccessible because the catalog license has ended.

Some Game Catalog titles can be streamed rather than installed. Sony’s support guidance gives a minimum broadband requirement of 5 Mbps for Game Catalog streaming. That is a minimum connection figure, not a guarantee of consistent image quality or low latency; household traffic, Wi-Fi conditions and regional service availability can affect the experience.
Streaming does not change the catalog rule. If Sony removes the title or the required membership is no longer active, streaming access ends just as download access does.
A deadline checklist for the monthly lineup
- Open the PlayStation Plus monthly-games page on your console, the web store or the PlayStation App.
- Identify every title you want from the current calendar month’s offer.
- For each title, complete the claim or Add to Library action on the correct PSN account.
- On PS5, selecting Download from the monthly-games page performs the installation and claim flow. On PS4, select Add to Library before downloading.
- Open Game Library and verify that each claimed title is listed.
- Install immediately, start a remote download, or leave the game for later.
- Do not use a catalog download as a substitute for claiming a monthly game; the two licenses behave differently.
Troubleshooting before a game disappears
The title is no longer in Monthly Games
The monthly offer may already have changed. Check Game Library for a completed claim. If the game is not there and the lineup has expired, the monthly redemption window has likely closed.
The game is listed but shows a lock
First check that the signed-in account still has the PlayStation Plus tier required for that benefit. A redeemed monthly game requires active membership. A Game Catalog game additionally requires the matching Extra or Premium entitlement and must still be part of the catalog.

You downloaded a catalog game and it stopped working
Check whether Sony has removed the title from the Game Catalog. An installed catalog game does not become a permanent purchase, so removal can end service access. Buying the game separately is the direct way to keep playing when it is no longer offered.
You cannot find a claimed monthly title
Open Game Library rather than relying only on the current Monthly Games page. Also verify that you are using the PSN account that performed the claim. The monthly benefit belongs to that account’s library.
You are away from the console near the deadline
Use the web PlayStation Store or PlayStation App to claim the title and, where available, start a remote download. If installation cannot begin, complete the library claim first; downloading can wait.

Bottom line
For monthly PS Plus games, redeem first and download whenever you are ready. The claim must happen before the calendar-month lineup changes, and play access depends on an active PlayStation Plus membership. Game Catalog downloads follow a different rule: they are temporary licenses that end when Sony removes the title or the required membership is no longer available.
