A free-to-play game has no game charge, usually does not require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, and may sell optional in-game items.
To claim a Monthly Game on PS5, open Games home > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Monthly Games, choose a title, and select Download. On PS4, open PlayStation Plus > Monthly Games, choose the game, select Add to Library, and then Download. You can also start a download remotely from a web browser or the PlayStation App.

What “free” means on the PlayStation Store
The Store uses “free” for products with different entitlement rules. Identifying the category first prevents the most common mistake: assuming every zero-price download becomes a permanent purchase.
PlayStation Plus Monthly Games
Monthly Games are a PlayStation Plus benefit. PlayStation Support describes them as games you can download and play at no extra game charge during your PlayStation Plus membership. New games are added every calendar month. The entitlement is tied to your active membership, so adding a Monthly Game to your library does not turn it into a permanently owned title independent of PlayStation Plus.

If your membership is not active, a Monthly Game you previously claimed can remain associated with your account but will not be playable under the Monthly Games entitlement until the membership is active again. The exact Store wording can change as a monthly selection changes, so check the current listing before claiming.
Free-to-play Store games
A free-to-play product is a separate Store category. You can download the game without claiming it as a Monthly Game or selecting a PlayStation Plus benefit. PlayStation’s legal terms warn that a free-to-use product may include options to buy additional products with the PSN wallet. Optional purchases can include in-game content, currency, expansions or other items, depending on the title.
Some free-to-play games are exceptions to the normal PlayStation Plus requirement for online multiplayer. That exception is title-specific: check the individual Store page and the current PlayStation terms rather than assuming every game has identical online-access rules.

Claim a PlayStation Plus Monthly Game on PS5
Use the PlayStation Plus area rather than searching the general Store if you want the current Monthly Games selection.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Games home.
- Select PlayStation Plus.
- Open Benefits, then choose Monthly Games.
- Highlight the game you want to claim.
- Select Download.
The download begins on the console. If the page presents more than one product or edition, confirm that you are selecting the game included in the Monthly Games benefit rather than a separately priced add-on.

If you only want to secure the entitlement
The PS5 Monthly Games flow is centered on Download. If you do not want to install the game immediately, look for the Store’s option to add the included product to your account or library when it is offered on that title’s page. The important condition is that the game must be claimed while it is part of the current Monthly Games selection; waiting until a later month can mean the offer is no longer available.
Claim a PlayStation Plus Monthly Game on PS4
PS4 has an extra confirmation step that is easy to miss.

- Open PlayStation Plus from the PS4 interface.
- Select Monthly Games.
- Highlight the game you want.
- Choose Add to Library.
- After it is added, select Download.
The Add to Library action records the Monthly Game entitlement before you install it. Selecting Download then starts the installation on the PS4. If you leave the Monthly Games page without adding the title, you have not secured that month’s benefit.
Start a download remotely from a browser or phone
PlayStation supports starting a download without navigating the console’s menus. You can use a web browser or the PlayStation App, sign in to the PlayStation account associated with the console, open the relevant game listing, and choose the Store’s download-to-console command. The exact button wording and screen layout can vary between the browser and app.
Remote-download checklist
- Use the same PlayStation account that holds the PlayStation Plus entitlement or the free-to-play purchase/download record.
- Open the game’s current Store page, or the Monthly Games area when claiming a Monthly Game.
- Choose the option to download to your PlayStation console.
- Check the console later to confirm that the download has started or completed.
Remote downloading is a convenience feature, not a different entitlement. A Monthly Game still requires an active PlayStation Plus membership, and a free-to-play title still follows that title’s own Store and online-play rules.

Which PlayStation Plus plan includes the game?
Plan level determines which PlayStation Plus benefits you can use. PlayStation uses Premium or Deluxe as the top-tier name depending on region.

For a Monthly Game, Essential is the relevant minimum tier because Monthly Games are part of the base benefits. Extra and Premium/Deluxe also include that benefit. A catalog game is different: catalog access requires Extra or Premium/Deluxe, subject to the game’s availability and your region.
Download a game from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog
Game Catalog titles are not the same as Monthly Games. Their access comes from a qualifying PlayStation Plus plan and the title’s continued presence in the catalog.
- On PS5 or PS4, open the PlayStation Plus section.
- Open the Game Catalog.
- Select an eligible game.
- Choose Download to install it, if the title supports console download.
Catalog availability can change, and the Store will identify whether a game is included for your plan. If a title is not included in your tier or region, the catalog page will not provide the same entitlement as an eligible listing.
Streaming instead of downloading
Some catalog access can be used through streaming rather than a local installation. Streaming requires the appropriate PlayStation Plus plan and depends on service and regional availability. If streaming is offered for a title, select the available stream command; otherwise use Download when the game is available for installation.

Streaming and downloading are separate ways to use catalog access. Starting a stream does not create a permanent purchase, and downloading a catalog title does not make it independent of the qualifying PlayStation Plus entitlement.

When to claim a Monthly Game
PlayStation says new Monthly Games are added every calendar month. Treat the monthly selection as time-sensitive: claim a title while it is listed as a current benefit rather than assuming it will remain available indefinitely. Once claimed, the game is associated with your account under the Monthly Games entitlement, but play access still follows your active-membership status.
The calendar-month cadence does not mean every title is available for the same number of days in every region or that a previous selection will return. Use the Monthly Games page on your console, browser or app to verify what is currently offered.
Why a “free” game may not download or launch
The game is asking for payment
Confirm that you opened the Monthly Games section or an eligible Game Catalog listing, rather than a standard Store edition, add-on or purchase page. For Monthly Games, also confirm that the PlayStation account has an active PlayStation Plus membership. If the game is free-to-play, verify that you selected the free product and not an optional paid item.

On PS5, use Games home > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Monthly Games. On PS4, use PlayStation Plus > Monthly Games. If the menu is not showing the expected selection, check that you are signed in to the account with the membership and that the title is part of the current calendar-month offering.
You cannot play a previously claimed Monthly Game
Monthly Games are available at no extra game charge during an active PlayStation Plus membership. If the membership has ended or is not recognized on the account, the Monthly Games entitlement does not provide current play access. Reactivating the qualifying membership restores the condition required by the benefit.
The catalog game is unavailable
Check the plan tier first: Game Catalog access is associated with Extra and Premium/Deluxe, not the Essential-only benefit set. Then check whether the title is available in your region and whether the page offers download or streaming. Service and regional availability can differ.
The download was started remotely but is not visible
Verify that the browser or PlayStation App used the same PlayStation account connected to the intended console. Reopen the game page and check the download command, then inspect the console for the title. Remote downloading starts the same Store entitlement and installation process as beginning the download on the console; it does not bypass membership or catalog requirements.

A free-to-play download can still present paid options. PlayStation’s legal terms specifically note that a free-to-use product may include in-app purchases of additional products using the PSN wallet, including purchases made by a child family member. Read the title’s Store description and in-game purchase prompts before confirming transactions.
- Distinguish the free base game from paid currency, characters, expansions or cosmetic items.
- Review who is signed in before approving a wallet transaction.
- For a family account, check the family-management controls and purchase permissions appropriate to the account holder.
These purchase options do not change whether the initial game download is free; they are additional products governed by the individual title’s terms.

- Want this month’s included game? Open Monthly Games and claim the title on PS5 or PS4 using the platform-specific path above.
- Want a larger rotating selection? Check the Game Catalog and confirm that your plan is Extra or Premium/Deluxe.
- Want a game with no PlayStation Plus subscription? Look for a free-to-play Store product and read its multiplayer and in-app-purchase information.
- Not at your console? Use the PlayStation Store in a browser or the PlayStation App to start the download remotely.
- Cannot find the game? Verify the account, plan, current monthly selection, catalog eligibility and regional or streaming availability before treating it as a Store error.
