To get an open-world RPG through PlayStation Plus, first identify whether it is a rotating Monthly Game or a Game Catalog title. Monthly Games are included with every active tier, including Essential. Game Catalog downloads require Extra or Premium. On PS5, use PlayStation Plus → Benefits, then choose Monthly Games or Game Catalog. On PS4, open PlayStation Plus from the function screen and choose the corresponding section. Select the game and follow the on-screen download flow; for a PS4 Monthly Game, choose Add to Library before Download. You can also start the process from a web browser or the PlayStation App.
What “free” means on PlayStation Plus
A PlayStation Plus game has no separate purchase price while your membership qualifies and the title remains eligible. It is not an unrestricted giveaway. Your access depends on the entitlement type:

- Monthly Games: You add the monthly selection to your library and can download and play those games while the PlayStation Plus membership on the account is active.
- Game Catalog: Extra and Premium members may download included titles, but Sony can remove catalog games on stated removal dates. An active subscription alone does not guarantee that every catalog title remains available.
- Classics Catalog: Premium includes eligible classic games in addition to the Game Catalog; availability is likewise determined by the live catalog.
Therefore, “free” means included with the qualifying subscription for the applicable period, not permanent ownership. A title can leave the Game Catalog even if you have never canceled Plus.

The tier is attached to the PlayStation account that claims or downloads the game. Sign in to that account before beginning. If an open-world RPG is shown only in the Game Catalog, Essential does not unlock it; you need Extra or Premium.

Check these conditions before claiming
- Confirm that the console or app is signed in to the account carrying the active Plus membership.
- Check whether the game is a Monthly Game or a Game Catalog title. The distinction determines the minimum tier and how long access lasts.
- Verify your country or region. Sony’s catalog and release dates can differ between markets.
- Look for a catalog removal date before starting a large download. A removal date can end access while your membership is still active.
- Make sure the console has enough free storage for the installation. You can claim a game remotely, but downloading and playing it still requires compatible PlayStation hardware and available storage.
Claim a Monthly Game on PS5
PS5 presents the Monthly Games flow directly from the PlayStation Plus hub.
- From the Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Select Benefits.
- Choose Monthly Games to view the current rotation.
- Open the page for the open-world RPG you want.
- Select Download. If the game offers more than one version or add-on, choose the edition you intend to install.
The title is associated with your account under the Monthly Games entitlement. It remains playable while that account has an active qualifying membership and the game is installed or available to redownload.
Claim a Monthly Game on PS4
On PS4, add the game to your library before starting the download.

- Select Monthly Games.
- Open the desired game’s product page.
- Choose Add to Library.
- After the entitlement is added, select Download.
If you leave the page after selecting Add to Library, you can download the game later from your library while your membership remains active. Selecting only a store listing without completing the add-to-library step may leave the entitlement unclaimed.

Download an open-world RPG from the Game Catalog
Game Catalog titles are the route for Extra and Premium members. The catalog is a changing list, so the same title may not be present in every country or on every date.
PS5 Game Catalog steps
- Open PlayStation Plus from the Games home screen.
- Select Benefits.
- Choose Game Catalog.
- Browse or search for the open-world RPG.
- Open its game page and select Download if the title is included for your account and region.
Extra is the minimum tier for a downloadable Game Catalog title. Premium includes the same downloadable catalog entitlement, so upgrading from Extra is not necessary merely to download a Game Catalog RPG.
PS4 Game Catalog steps
- Open PlayStation Plus from the PS4 function screen.
- Select Game Catalog.
- Open the listing for the eligible RPG.
- Select Download and choose any available version or installation option.
A locked listing, a missing download control or a purchase price usually indicates that the account, tier, region or title availability does not match the catalog entitlement.
Start the download from a browser or the PlayStation App
Sony also supports remote downloads. This is useful when you are away from the console or want to queue a large installation before you return.

- Sign in to the PlayStation account that has the Plus membership in a web browser or in the PlayStation App.
- Find the game’s current PlayStation Store or catalog listing.
- Confirm that the listing identifies the title as included with your membership and that the correct console version is selected.
- Use the available option to add the Monthly Game to your library, or start the remote download for a catalog title.
- Leave the target console connected and signed in to the same account so it can receive the download request.
Remote access does not change the entitlement rules. Essential still covers only Monthly Games, while a Game Catalog download still requires Extra or Premium. If the web or app listing shows a normal purchase price, check the account and region before paying; do not assume that every store result is a Plus listing.
Monthly Games and Game Catalog: the decision that matters

Open-world RPG examples and how to verify them
Open-world is a broad format rather than a separate PlayStation Plus category. You still need to check the title’s current listing and entitlement type. A PlayStation Blog feature dated May 22, 2026 named Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077 among open-world games in the Game Catalog. A July 15, 2026 catalog announcement added Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Rise of the Ronin as open-world examples.
Those announcements are evidence that the games were presented as catalog examples at those times, not a promise that each one is downloadable now. Sony publishes market-specific availability dates, including differences among the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and other regions. Before you plan a download, open the live Game Catalog for your country and check whether the title is still listed, which edition is included and whether a removal date is displayed.

The title is in the Game Catalog but your tier is Essential
Essential does not include downloadable Game Catalog access. Upgrade to Extra or Premium, or wait until the game appears as a Monthly Game. A catalog listing can remain visible even when your current tier does not grant the entitlement.

You are looking at a removed or region-limited title
Catalog rights vary by country and date. Search the catalog from the account’s actual region and inspect the title page rather than relying on an old announcement, video or search result. If Sony has reached the title’s removal date, an active membership cannot restore that catalog entitlement.
You skipped the PS4 library step
For a PS4 Monthly Game, select Add to Library before Download. The PS5 Monthly Games presentation can show Download directly, so following PS5 instructions on PS4 can make the expected control appear to be missing.
The wrong account is signed in
Sign out of any account that lacks the membership and sign in to the account that holds it. The entitlement follows the account that claims it; switching accounts can change the price and download controls shown on the same console.
The console cannot start the installation
Check free storage, the console’s network connection and that the requested platform version is supported. A remote request also requires the target console to be connected and associated with the same PlayStation account. If the title page offers streaming but not downloading, read the streaming section below rather than treating the two delivery methods as interchangeable.

Downloading versus streaming with Premium
Premium adds streaming for eligible catalog games, but streaming is a separate delivery method from downloading. Downloading installs the game on the console and uses local storage. Streaming runs an eligible title from Sony’s service and depends on the broadband conditions Sony specifies for the service. Not every catalog game, market or device necessarily offers the streaming option.
Choose Download when you want a local installation and have sufficient storage. Choose Stream only when the title page offers it, your Premium account qualifies and your connection meets Sony’s requirements. A streaming option does not change the game’s catalog removal date or make the title permanent.
What happens if you cancel Plus?
Monthly Games and Game Catalog titles are subscription entitlements. Once the membership on the claiming account is no longer active, you cannot continue playing those Plus-provided games through that entitlement. Reinstalling the files does not bypass the membership check.

For a Game Catalog RPG, there is a second condition: the title must still be in the catalog. Even with an active Extra or Premium membership, a removed title is no longer available through the catalog. Check the live listing before deleting a game you may want to finish.
A reliable quick workflow
- Identify whether the RPG is a Monthly Game or a Game Catalog title.
- Match the title to the required tier: any active tier for Monthly Games, Extra or Premium for Game Catalog.
- Check the live listing for your country, edition and any removal date.
- Use the correct console path: PS5 PlayStation Plus → Benefits; PS4 PlayStation Plus from the function screen.
- On PS4 Monthly Games, select Add to Library before Download.
- Alternatively, claim or queue the title remotely in a browser or the PlayStation App while signed in to the membership account.
- Keep the console connected, verify storage and start the installation.
This sequence prevents the most common mismatch: treating a catalog title as a permanent free purchase or trying to download it with an Essential-only membership.
