Choose Valheim if you want an expedition-led Viking survival game in which travel, supplies and portal restrictions keep logistics meaningful. Choose Enshrouded if action-RPG combat, substantial construction and a large co-op party matter most. Choose RuneScape: Dragonwilds if you want RuneScape skills, magic, potions, quests and a more guided survival-RPG structure.
All three support solo play and co-op, but they emphasize different reasons to survive. The practical decision comes down to seven questions: how much survival pressure you want, how deeply you want to build, whether combat or exploration leads the experience, how convenient travel should be, what kind of progression motivates you, how many friends you will bring, and which platforms you need.

The quick choice
| Reader priority | First choice | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition, survival pressure and self-directed travel | Valheim | Player-crafted portals have item restrictions, so route planning and logistics remain part of the survival loop. Multiplayer is listed for 1–10 players. |
| Building plus action-RPG combat | Enshrouded | Construction and combat are foregrounded. Unlockable fast-travel points reduce travel friction, and multiplayer is listed for 1–16 players. |
| Skills, magic, potions and RuneScape context | RuneScape: Dragonwilds | It combines survival crafting with RuneScape-style skills and magic. Player-crafted portals require runes, and multiplayer is listed for 1–6 players. |
| Largest group | Enshrouded | The listed capacity reaches 16 players, compared with 10 for Valheim and six for Dragonwilds. |
| RuneScape familiarity | RuneScape: Dragonwilds | It is a standalone co-op survival game set in the RuneScape universe. |
This is a preference decision rather than a universal ranking. The game with the most systems is not automatically the best first game; the right choice is the one whose central loop sounds enjoyable before you learn every recipe or map.
What actually separates the three games
Survival-crafting games overlap in their basic verbs: gather materials, make equipment, establish a base and push into a more dangerous world. The distinction is what each game asks you to value while doing those things.
#1 Best Overall
Survival pressure
Valheim is the clearest choice if you want survival pressure to shape your route. Its portal restrictions mean that even after you unlock convenient travel, moving resources and planning expeditions still matter. A journey is not simply a menu selection; it is a logistical decision.
Enshrouded puts more emphasis on the action-RPG side of the formula. Its fast-travel points are unlockable, so the game is designed to make movement between established locations more convenient as your world develops.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDragonwilds sits between survival crafting and a more guided role-playing structure. Skills, magic, potions and RuneScape progression give you goals beyond merely staying alive, while rune-powered portals make travel part of resource management.
Building depth
If building is the main reason you are interested in the genre, start with Enshrouded. The comparison positions construction as one of its defining strengths, alongside action-RPG combat. That makes it the most natural first pick for a player who wants to spend substantial time shaping bases rather than treating a shelter as a temporary utility.
Valheim and Dragonwilds both include building as part of their survival-crafting foundations, but the available information does not establish the same construction focus for either one. Choose them for their broader expedition or RuneScape progression identities, not on the assumption that they match Enshrouded’s building emphasis.
Combat
Enshrouded is the straightforward recommendation when combat should feel like an action RPG. Its combat focus is explicit in the comparison, so players who enjoy active fights and character-oriented encounters should begin there.
Dragonwilds is better suited to someone who wants combat connected to skills, magic, potions and RuneScape-style progression. Valheim is the better fit when combat is one part of a wider expedition loop rather than the primary reason to play.
Travel
Travel is a major point of difference:
- Valheim: you craft portals, but item restrictions preserve the need to move some supplies through the world and plan journeys.
- Enshrouded: you unlock fast-travel points, making established routes more convenient as you progress.
- Dragonwilds: you craft portals that require runes, tying convenience to a consumable or collectible resource.
Pick Valheim if you enjoy the decisions created by inconvenience. Pick Enshrouded if you want exploration to become smoother through permanent travel points. Pick Dragonwilds if travel convenience is welcome but you want it connected to a RuneScape-flavored resource system.
Why Valheim is the best first game for expedition-minded players
Valheim is the expedition choice. Its Viking setting and survival identity are built around leaving a safe place, preparing for a destination, bringing back materials and deciding how to connect the world with player-crafted portals. The portal item limitation is important because it prevents fast travel from erasing the logistics that make a survival game feel like an expedition.
Rank #2
- Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dino herd
- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game. Run too far and not only will you be exhausted, but you will also quickly get hungry and thirsty. Weather effects are based on real-world climates, and so you'll need to hide out from rain and snow, while making the most of sunny days
- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Gather Resources, Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes and style of everything from the walls of your home, to your character's armor, weapons and more
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout. Make your way to the final boss and figure out why you've been dropped into this Jurassic-era experience
Choose Valheim when logistics sound fun
Valheim fits players who enjoy questions such as:
- Should we establish a temporary outpost before pushing farther?
- Which materials are worth carrying home, and which can wait?
- Is a portal network worth building even if some items still require a physical journey?
- How should a group divide preparation, scouting and transport?
Those decisions create a slower, more self-directed rhythm. The game does not remove friction simply because you have advanced; the friction becomes part of the long-term survival identity.

Valheim for solo play
Valheim supports a single player, so it is a valid first solo choice. Solo players should choose it when they like setting their own objectives and are comfortable handling exploration, construction and logistics without a party. The expedition structure can feel especially deliberate alone because every route and supply decision belongs to you.
If you want the game to point you toward skills, spells or quest-like goals, Dragonwilds is the more natural alternative. If you want your solo time to center on combat encounters and elaborate construction, Enshrouded is the stronger match.
Valheim with friends
The listed multiplayer range is 1–10 players. That makes Valheim suitable for a small or medium-sized group that wants a shared world without turning every activity into a large-server event. It is a particularly good fit when your group enjoys dividing expedition duties and building a connected network of bases and routes.
Why Enshrouded is the best first game for builders and action-RPG players
Enshrouded leads with two ideas: action-RPG combat and substantial construction. It also has the largest listed multiplayer capacity of the three games, with support for 1–16 players. That combination makes it the safest recommendation for a large friend group or for anyone who sees the base as a creative project rather than a storage stop.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose Enshrouded when the base is part of the hobby
Enshrouded is the game to start with if you want your building time to be as important as your time in combat. A player who enjoys planning rooms, expanding a settlement and making a home feel intentional will find its stated construction emphasis more relevant than Valheim’s expedition-first identity or Dragonwilds’ skills-and-magic focus.
The comparison describes player-crafted bases as limited, so building is substantial without implying unlimited locations. That limitation is useful for group planning: decide which settlement is the main home, which locations serve as forward bases and how your party will use the available spaces.
Choose Enshrouded when travel should become convenient
Enshrouded uses unlockable fast-travel points. This favors players who want exploration early but do not want every later supply run to repeat the same long journey. The system gives progression a practical payoff: opening a new point changes how you move through the world.
Enshrouded for solo play
Enshrouded supports one player, so it works as a solo first game for someone who prefers action-RPG combat and construction. The main question is not whether it can be played alone, but whether its combat-and-building balance matches what you want to do when nobody else is online.
Rank #3
Enshrouded with friends
The listed range of 1–16 players is the largest in this comparison. Choose it for a large group, especially if your friends want to build together and still have room for active combat and exploration. For a party of more than six, it is the only one of these three games whose listed capacity reaches that size.
Why RuneScape: Dragonwilds is the best first game for skills, magic and guided progression
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a standalone co-op survival game set in the RuneScape universe. Jagex describes its premise as: Gather, build, skill and craft to survive in this co-operative survival crafting game.
That wording captures the difference: the survival loop is connected to recognizable RuneScape-style skills, magic, potions and quests rather than standing entirely on expedition logistics or construction.
Choose Dragonwilds for RuneScape progression
Dragonwilds is the strongest first choice if your motivation comes from improving a character through skills, learning or using magic, preparing potions and following a more guided survival-RPG structure. RuneScape familiarity is useful because the setting and progression language are part of the appeal, but newcomers can still choose it if those systems sound more inviting than a purely self-directed journey.
Dragonwilds and travel
Dragonwilds includes player-crafted portals that require runes. That gives fast movement a cost and connects travel to the game’s progression resources. It is less about removing travel entirely than deciding when the convenience is worth spending or obtaining the required runes.
Dragonwilds for solo play and small groups
The listed multiplayer range is 1–6 players. That makes Dragonwilds the most suitable of the three for a solo player or a compact group that wants a shared RuneScape-flavored progression path. It is not the choice for a 10- or 16-player gathering based on the listed capacities.
Launch status and platforms
Jagex announced that Dragonwilds leaves Early Access for full launch on 15 September 2026. The announcement names PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Jagex’s official FAQ also lists Nintendo Switch 2. Because the full launch date has passed, buyers should check the current storefront listing for the edition and platform they use rather than relying on an older Early Access page.
Jagex reported more than one million Early Access sales in 2026. That is a publisher-reported sales figure, not an independent quality score or a guarantee that the game matches your preferred survival style.

Which game should you choose for solo play?
All three games list a minimum of one player, so solo availability does not decide the purchase by itself. Match the solo experience to the kind of decisions you want to make:
- Choose Valheim if you want to set your own expedition goals, manage routes and live with meaningful travel logistics.
- Choose Enshrouded if you want active action-RPG combat and a substantial personal building project.
- Choose Dragonwilds if you want skills, magic, potions, quests and a more guided RuneScape-style progression structure.
Do not pick solely by player count when playing alone. The listed ranges describe supported group size; they do not say which game is easiest, fastest or most rewarding for a solo player.

Which game is best with friends?
Start with your actual party size, then consider what the group does together:
| Planned group | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Two to six players who want skills and magic | RuneScape: Dragonwilds | The listed 1–6 range accommodates the group, and RuneScape progression, magic and potions provide shared goals. |
| Two to ten players who want expeditions | Valheim | The listed 1–10 range supports the party, while portal restrictions keep transport and route planning meaningful. |
| Two to sixteen players who want building and combat | Enshrouded | Its listed 1–16 capacity is the largest, and construction plus action-RPG combat are its defining emphases. |
| More than six players | Enshrouded | It is the only option here with a listed capacity above six. |
For a smaller group, capacity is less important than the activity your friends will repeat most often. A party that loves designing a shared base should not choose Valheim merely because its portal logistics sound interesting; a party that loves long expeditions may find Enshrouded’s convenience less compelling.
How progression changes your choice
Self-directed progression: Valheim
Valheim is the choice for players who want the world and the next expedition to provide the structure. You decide where to go, what to connect and which logistical problems are worth solving. This is satisfying when planning is part of the entertainment, but less suitable if you want a clear skill-and-quest framework to tell you what to pursue next.
Combat-and-construction progression: Enshrouded
Enshrouded ties its appeal to improving your ability to fight and to develop substantial bases. Unlockable fast-travel points also make exploration progression tangible because new locations affect later movement. Choose it when you want progression to improve both your character’s combat role and your settlement’s reach.
Skill-and-magic progression: Dragonwilds
Dragonwilds is the most explicit match for players who measure progress through skills, magic, potions and RuneScape context. Its survival systems are not an isolated set of meters; they sit inside a broader role-playing structure. Choose it if that combination sounds more motivating than optimizing routes or designing a settlement.
A practical decision process before you buy
- Count the players. If your group can exceed six, choose Enshrouded from the listed capacities. If you are alone, all three remain eligible.
- Name the activity you would miss most. Say “expeditions,” “building and combat,” or “skills and magic.” That phrase points to Valheim, Enshrouded or Dragonwilds respectively.
- Decide how you feel about travel friction. Valheim preserves logistics through portal item limits; Enshrouded uses unlockable fast-travel points; Dragonwilds requires runes for crafted portals.
- Choose your preferred structure. Pick Valheim for self-directed journeys, Enshrouded for an action-RPG construction loop, or Dragonwilds for guided survival-RPG progression.
- Check your platform and edition. Dragonwilds’ announced full-launch platforms are PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Nintendo Switch 2 listed in its official FAQ. Verify the current store page for the exact platform and edition before purchasing. Platform availability for the other two games is not established in the comparison information used here.
- Confirm the current price. Prices, regional editions and live store inventory change. Check the relevant retailer or publisher storefront at checkout rather than relying on an old listing.
Common mismatches to avoid
Choosing by setting alone
A Viking setting points toward Valheim, and RuneScape familiarity points toward Dragonwilds, but setting is only useful if the underlying loop also appeals to you. A player who dislikes logistics may not enjoy Valheim’s portal restrictions, while a player who wants a large building project may prefer Enshrouded even without a particular interest in its setting.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Assuming fast travel makes every game the same
The three travel systems serve different purposes. Valheim’s restrictions preserve logistics, Enshrouded’s unlockable points reduce repeated journeys, and Dragonwilds’ rune requirement turns portal use into a resource decision. Treating them as interchangeable misses one of the clearest differences between the games.
Using group capacity as a quality ranking
Enshrouded’s listed 16-player limit makes it the capacity leader, not an automatic winner for a two-person co-op session. A smaller party may prefer Dragonwilds’ skill progression or Valheim’s expedition planning.
Expecting an Early Access description to answer a post-launch purchase
Dragonwilds reached full launch on 15 September 2026. Check current platform, edition and storefront information before buying, especially if you are comparing an older Early Access page with a current listing.
The bottom-line recommendation
Pick Valheim when the fantasy is preparing for a voyage, discovering a new region and solving the logistics of bringing useful materials home. Pick Enshrouded when you want the strongest stated combination of building and action-RPG combat, or when your group may reach 16 players. Pick RuneScape: Dragonwilds when skills, magic, potions, quests and RuneScape progression are the reasons you want to enter a survival-crafting game in the first place.
