Start by checking what you can actually play
Before ranking games, confirm that each candidate is coming to the platform you own or plan to use. A game announced for several systems may not launch on all of them at the same time. Check the listing for your specific platform rather than assuming a date applies everywhere. Storefronts can help you track upcoming titles, but verify the individual game page before relying on a listing: Steam’s Upcoming Releases page.

Sort the candidates by date certainty
Put confirmed, platform-specific dates in your near-term queue. Treat a release window, an announced year, or a title with no date as tentative; keep it on a watch list rather than letting it displace a game you can plan around. Release calendars are useful for finding candidates and seeing how dates are presented, but schedules can change. GamesRadar’s release calendar lists games by date and platform and separates known titles without dates. Game Informer’s 2026 schedule says it updates announced dates, delays, and reveals, and assigns games to a month once a date is confirmed. Recheck a consequential date on the relevant game listing or publisher page as launch approaches.

Once you have removed unavailable or poorly timed options, compare the remaining games on the factors that matter to you. There is no established universal formula for deciding which game is best to play first; the point is to make your own constraints visible.

- Personal excitement: Which game are you genuinely eager to start? Popularity or attention is not proof that a game is right for you.
- Time available: Decide whether you want a short diversion or are ready for the kind of commitment you expect from a particular game. There is no single playtime measure here that can rank all candidates for every player.
- Who will play: If the appeal depends on friends joining, check their availability and confirm that the game supports the platforms your group uses.
- Cost: Compare the price you would pay with any confirmed access through a subscription you already have. Do not count an unverified offer as a reason to choose a title.
Use wishlists and calendars to keep track, not to decide for you
A calendar can make release timing easier to follow, while a wishlist records games you have already expressed interest in. Steam says its Personalized Calendar draws recommendations from games you play frequently and includes games already on your wishlist whether or not its system recommends them. As Steam explains, “The calendar view also includes any game that you have already added to your wishlist, regardless of whether the system recommends it; you’ve already expressed interest in that game, and you likely want to know when it is coming out.” Steam’s Personalized Calendar explanation describes the feature. A wishlist helps you remember what interests you; it is not a quality rating or a ranking of what you should play first.
Verify subscription access before counting it in the cost
A subscription offer can change the effective cost, but confirm the specific game, platform, plan, and date before relying on it. Check that the offer covers the full release rather than a demo or an earlier access period, and look for explicit “day one” wording. Do not assume a console launch means a PC version is included, or that plan membership automatically makes a title available through cloud gaming. A third-party Game Pass calendar can be a starting point, but confirm details on the official service and game listing: TrueAchievements’ Game Pass calendar.

Make a small queue and revisit it
Pick one first choice and a few alternatives. Keep other candidates on your wishlist or calendar. When a date changes, your available time shifts, or new information affects your interest, review the queue and choose again. That keeps the decision practical without treating an uncertain release schedule or someone else’s popularity ranking as a personal recommendation.
