How to Reprogram a Vivint Smart Thermostat: App, Schedule, and GC-TBZ48 Steps

Vivint thermostat reprogramming depends on the model and task. Follow the current app path for general settings, and reserve the on-device FAN menu steps for the GC-TBZ48.

“Reprogram” can mean changing an app setting, editing a temperature schedule, setting the clock, changing HVAC configuration, or restoring defaults. Start by identifying your thermostat model: Vivint’s current app instructions cover general settings, while the button sequence below applies only to the legacy GC-TBZ48. Do not use that sequence on an Element V2 or assume it changes a schedule.

Identify your thermostat and the change you want to make

Check the model label or the thermostat’s product information before following on-device instructions. The Element V2 is model VS-ELEM02-001; the GC-TBZ48 is a separate legacy Z-Wave thermostat. Vivint’s Element V2 specifications describe compatibility with SkyControl and Hub panels running firmware 3.19.3 or newer and over-the-air software updates. That does not make the GC-TBZ48 menu procedure applicable to the V2.

Goal Where to start Important distinction
Change general thermostat settings Vivint Smart Home app The documented path exposes options such as Mode and Fan; it is not a complete schedule-edit procedure.
Edit a schedule Schedule controls in the app or support instructions matching your app and panel generation Schedule steps vary; do not treat a clock-setting or factory-default procedure as schedule editing.
Set the clock or configure HVAC On-device menu, only if the unit is a GC-TBZ48 Menu-button steps here are model-specific.
Restore factory defaults Advanced settings on the GC-TBZ48, only when that is your intention This is not a routine way to change a setpoint or schedule, and effects may vary by installation.

Change settings in the Vivint Smart Home app

Vivint’s documented path for general thermostat settings is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Tap the Temperature icon to open the thermostat main screen.
  2. Tap the settings gear in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select the thermostat you want to adjust.
  4. Choose an available option, such as Mode, Fan, States, or Notifications, and follow the controls shown in the app.

Labels and available controls can depend on the app and device setup. Vivint’s thermostat FAQ says its thermostat supports Smart Comfort automation and manual scheduling, but the available instructions do not establish a universal tap-by-tap schedule sequence. For a schedule change, open the matching schedule controls in your app or use Vivint’s support instructions for your panel and thermostat generation. Older Vivint help material refers to the Classic App and Go!Control Online Access; those are legacy interfaces, not instructions to apply automatically to the current app.

Use the GC-TBZ48 on-device menu

These steps are for the GC-TBZ48 guide only. They should not be transferred to the Element V2 or another thermostat model.

Open Menu Mode

  1. Wake the thermostat display.
  2. Press and hold FAN for five seconds, until SETUP appears.
  3. Use the arrow buttons to move through the menu categories: SETUP (user preferences), SYSTEM (HVAC configuration), Z-WAVE (network inclusion or removal), CLOCK, and INFO.

Set the clock

  1. Wake the display and hold FAN for five seconds until SETUP appears.
  2. Use the arrow buttons to select CLOCK, then press SELECT.
  3. Navigate to DAY and TIME, and use the arrows to set the current values.
  4. Press SELECT, then press FAN (Done) twice.

This changes the clock on the GC-TBZ48; it is not a procedure for editing a temperature schedule.

Change HVAC configuration only when you know the installed system

The GC-TBZ48 guide’s preset is standard gas/electric, gas heat fan, one heating stage, and one cooling stage. Its SYSTEM menu includes HVAC type (standard gas/electric or heat pump), fan type, and, for heat pumps, changeover valve type. The configuration must match the equipment actually installed. If you cannot identify your system or wiring, do not guess at these settings; an incorrect configuration can cause poor operation. Use model- and system-specific help from Vivint or a qualified HVAC professional.

Understand schedule, reset, and model limits

Schedule editing is separate from clock setting

A schedule determines when target temperatures change; the GC-TBZ48 clock procedure only sets day and time. Vivint’s FAQ describes manual scheduling and Smart Comfort automation, but exact schedule controls are not established for every app, panel, or thermostat combination. Use the controls presented for your installed setup rather than following an assumed universal sequence.

Factory defaults are not a routine reprogramming step

The GC-TBZ48 guide includes Restore Defaults under advanced settings, with Yes to restore or No to exit. Choose it only if you intend to restore defaults and understand that this is different from changing a schedule or setpoint. The available guide information does not establish every effect on every installation. Record relevant settings and consult model-specific support before proceeding if you are unsure.

Element V2 uses different instructions

For the Element V2 (VS-ELEM02-001), use the Smart Home app’s current options or instructions that specifically name that model. Vivint’s surfaced product information gives panel compatibility and update details, but does not provide an equivalent V2 button-menu programming or reset procedure. Do not hold FAN for five seconds on the assumption that the GC-TBZ48 menu will appear.

Power and battery notes for owners of a GC-TBZ48

Vivint’s FAQ says its thermostat line works with most low-voltage systems, including conventional forced-air, heat pump, auxiliary or emergency heat, and multi-zone systems, with one thermostat per zone. It recommends a C wire for continuous power when available and says the thermostat can operate on four AA batteries without one; the FAQ gives typical battery life as one to two years. These are general FAQ statements, not a substitute for checking the exact model and wiring.

For the GC-TBZ48 specifically, its guide says the unit can use 24 VAC when R and C wires are available, or four AA batteries. For battery operation, the guide specifies alkaline cells and replacing all four together. Confirm that you have this model and battery-powered configuration before applying that advice; it is not an Element V2 battery instruction.
