Buy first the new game that fits your platform, edition, preferred way to play, available time, budget, accessibility needs and tolerance for launch risk—not the one with the highest single review score. A short, like-for-like comparison will usually produce a better choice than chasing a genre label or an impressive deluxe bundle.
Start with fit, not hype
Before opening review pages or comparing prices, establish what you can actually play and what you want to do. A game that cannot run on your platform, requires a mode you do not use, or conflicts with your schedule is a poor purchase regardless of its reputation.

Confirm the exact platform and edition
Check the storefront listing for the specific platform you own. A title may have separate console, PC or cloud versions, and features can differ between them. Verify the edition tier as well: standard, deluxe, ultimate and physical editions may contain different base games, expansions, cosmetic items or pre-order bonuses.

- Check whether cross-play, cross-save or multiplayer access applies to your platform and edition.
- Read regional restrictions before buying a code or physical copy.
Do this comparison before considering reviews. A score for another platform or edition is not automatically evidence about the version you would receive.

Describe the experience you want
Genre is only a starting filter. Two games labelled as role-playing, action, strategy or sports titles can differ radically in pace, structure and controls. Write a one-sentence brief such as “a solo campaign for short evening sessions,” “local co-op for this weekend,” or “a competitive online game with a large active population.”

Build a like-for-like shortlist

Record the total cost, not just the headline price
Write down the current price and whether it is a temporary sale. Include any subscription required for online play, paid expansions needed for the intended experience, or peripherals you do not already own. Separate essential content from extras
Ask whether a higher tier changes what you will actually play. An expansion that adds a substantial campaign is different from cosmetic outfits, soundtrack files or early access to items. If the base game contains the mode and story you want, the standard edition is the relevant baseline. Buy an upgrade only when its included content has a clear value to you and is not merely a promise of future access.
Read critic and player reviews as different evidence
Critic aggregates and player sentiment answer different questions. Professional reviews often provide structured coverage of design, writing, performance and accessibility near launch. Player reviews reveal how a wider audience experiences updates, matchmaking, technical problems, pricing and long-term support. Neither score is a universal quality measurement.

Capture the context behind every score
For each aggregate or storefront rating, record the platform, review source, number of reviews, eligibility rules, date checked and the written reasons reviewers give. A percentage without that context is difficult to compare. A score based on a small number of reviews can move sharply; a large sample can still reflect a different platform or an earlier build.
Investigate disagreement instead of averaging it away
A high critic score and weak player sentiment, or the reverse, is a prompt to investigate. Look for a platform-specific performance problem, a patch that changed the experience, an online population issue, an aggressive monetization model or expectations that differ between audiences. Read recent written reviews and official update notes rather than treating the gap as proof that one group is wrong.

- Check whether complaints concern the version you would buy.
- Distinguish a fixable launch bug from a design choice you would dislike permanently.
- Note whether positive comments describe the activity and mode you want.
Decide whether to buy at launch or wait
A launch purchase trades immediate access for greater uncertainty. Buying immediately can matter when friends are starting together, a competitive season begins, or you specifically want to participate in the launch conversation. Waiting can provide independent performance reports, patch history, clearer system requirements and a better sense of the active online population.

Check launch-version performance evidence, feature completeness, server requirements and the storefront’s current preorder and refund terms. Do not assume that a promised patch will arrive on a particular schedule or solve an issue you have not verified.
Approach Early Access with a different standard
Early Access is a purchase of a playable work in progress, not a guarantee that the finished game will match its current design, scope or performance. Read the developer’s description of the present build, update cadence, known limitations and planned features. Then decide whether the current version is worth playing on its own.

Steam states that Early Access purchases remain eligible under its refund rules, with playtime and purchase date considered. Check the terms shown for your account and region; eligibility is not a promise that every situation will be approved. If the present build does not satisfy your brief, waiting is the rational choice even if the eventual game looks promising.
Judge deluxe and ultimate editions by usable content
Premium editions often combine several kinds of value. Separate them before paying more:
- Playable additions: expansions, story chapters, missions or characters you genuinely plan to use.
- Convenience items: currency, progression boosts or unlocks that may save time but are not required.
- Cosmetics: outfits, effects, emotes and other appearance items.
- Future promises: season passes or content not yet released, whose timing and quality remain uncertain.
- Physical or digital extras: art books, soundtracks and collectibles that have value only if you want them.
Compare the premium price with the cost of buying the included expansions separately, where that information is available. Do not count an item twice, and do not assign value to content you would never use. A standard edition plus a later, informed expansion purchase can be less risky than paying for an entire future-content bundle at launch.
Use playtime and cost-per-hour carefully
Campaign length is context, not a guarantee of enjoyment. A short, focused game can be a better purchase than a long one filled with repetition, while a replayable multiplayer game may justify its price through many sessions. Estimates also vary by difficulty, optional content, skill and play style.

For a rough comparison, divide the price you would actually pay by a realistic number of hours you expect to enjoy—not a maximum completion estimate. Keep this calculation secondary to fit, because a low cost per hour is not good value if the activity, controls or tone are wrong. Record whether the estimate covers a finished campaign, optional content, repeatable modes or an ongoing service.

Read the game’s accessibility information and test whether the listed options address your needs. Useful details can include subtitle controls, text size, color settings, remappable controls, one-handed input, aim assistance, difficulty adjustments, motion reduction, audio sliders and menu narration. Availability can differ by platform and edition, so verify the version you intend to buy.
Also check practical constraints: storage space, download size, required online connection, account linking, controller support, local-player count and whether a subscription is needed for online features. For a household purchase, confirm that the intended users can access the game under the platform’s sharing and parental-control rules.
Account for online population and session structure
Online games depend on other players. A strong review score cannot guarantee quick matchmaking in your region or at your usual playing time. Look for evidence about server regions, cross-play, queue times, the number of players required and whether solo or private options exist. If the game is seasonal, note how progression, rewards and access change between seasons.

For local co-op, verify the exact number of supported players, whether each person needs an account, and whether all modes work on one screen. For online co-op, check platform restrictions and voice or text communication options. These details can change a seemingly ideal weekend purchase into a game your group cannot use together.
Verify refunds before you commit
Open the storefront’s current refund policy before pre-ordering or downloading. Record the conditions involving purchase date, playtime, pre-loads, downloadable content, bundles and Early Access. Policies differ by store, region and product type, and a refund option is most useful when you know its limits before testing the game.
Keep your receipt and note when you started playing. If the game has serious technical problems, document the symptoms and the version number. A refund policy is a safety net, not a substitute for checking platform compatibility and fit.
Make a weighted decision instead of chasing one score
When two or more finalists remain, assign each a simple rating from 1 to 5 for the factors that matter to you. Give the most weight to non-negotiables. For example, a player seeking couch co-op might weight local multiplayer and controller support more heavily than campaign length; someone buying a solo story game might weight narrative fit and offline access.

You need a game for a shared weekend
Filter for local or online co-op first, then verify player count, platform compatibility, controller support and session length. Check whether everyone needs a subscription or separate account. Reviews matter after those requirements are confirmed, because a highly rated solo game cannot solve a group-play need.
You want the longest solo campaign

You are sensitive to launch problems

You are choosing between standard and deluxe
