How to Choose Which iCloud Mail Alias Sends a Message

Set the addresses available in iCloud.com Mail, choose a default sender, or select another enabled alias from From while composing a message.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In iCloud.com Mail, set the addresses you want available under Settings → Send From, then choose a default. For one message, select From while composing and pick a different enabled address. Apple’s detailed menu steps apply to iCloud.com; aliases can also send and receive on devices where Mail is turned on in iCloud settings, though the controls may differ by device.

Set which addresses can send mail and choose a default

Use iCloud.com Mail to enable the addresses that should appear in the sender menu and select the one used by default for new messages.

  1. Go to iCloud.com Mail and sign in.
  2. Open the Settings control above the mailbox list, then choose Settings.
  3. Under Send From, select the email address section.
  4. Select each address you want to be able to send from.
  5. Under Default Send Address, choose the address you want used by default.
  6. Save your changes. The selected sending addresses should appear in the From menu for new messages.

Apple’s instructions are for iCloud.com Mail: Choose a default email address to send mail from on iCloud.com.

Choose a different alias for one message

When composing a message in iCloud.com Mail, select From and choose the enabled address you want to use. This changes the sender for that message; it does not change your default setting. Apple’s composition instructions say to select From to choose a different sending address: Write and send email in Mail on iCloud.com.

What an iCloud Mail alias is—and what the sender sees

An alias is an alternate address attached to your primary iCloud Mail address, not a separate Apple Account. Apple describes it as “an alternate email address” that can help keep your real email address private. Messages sent to an alias arrive in your primary inbox by default. Apple Support: What are email aliases in iCloud Mail?

The alias’s full name appears in the message’s From field. Its label is used to list the alias in settings, so the label helps you identify it there but is not the sender name recipients see. You can edit alias details in iCloud.com Mail. See Apple’s instructions for adding and managing aliases.

If the alias is missing from the From menu

  • Check that the address is selected in iCloud.com Mail under Settings → Send From. Only selected sending addresses should be available in the menu.
  • Confirm that the address is an alias on the iCloud Mail account you are using. A primary iCloud Mail address must already be set up before aliases can be created.
  • If you are using an Apple device rather than iCloud.com, make sure Mail is turned on in iCloud settings. Apple confirms aliases can send and receive on devices with Mail enabled, but its cited menu steps are specifically for iCloud.com.

Create, disable, or delete an alias

Apple allows up to three @icloud.com aliases. An alias cannot be changed into a different address, transferred, or converted into the primary account. If you have three aliases and delete one, Apple says to wait seven days before creating a replacement. People who retained five MobileMe aliases have different replacement limits, so the three-alias rule does not mean every account can immediately refill a deleted slot. These limits and timings are stated on Apple Support’s alias guidance, which does not display a publication year: Add and manage email aliases for iCloud Mail on iCloud.com.

Disable an alias temporarily

Turning off an alias is reversible. However, Apple says messages sent to an alias while it is turned off are returned to the sender. Re-enable it if you want to use the address again.
