Choose one main app to control each RGB device: use Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting when your hardware is supported and its basic controls are enough; use the manufacturer’s utility for features or devices that depend on it; or try one third-party controller after checking its compatibility list. If more than one app is trying to control the same device, settings may not stick or the lights may flicker.
Choose a controller that supports your devices
There is no universal best RGB app. The practical choice depends on which devices you own, what controls you need, and whether you rely on a maker-specific feature.

Windows introduced Dynamic Lighting with support from named hardware and software partners, but a partner list is not a guarantee that a particular product or model is compatible. Check the device itself rather than relying on brand presence. Microsoft’s September 27, 2023 announcement gives the launch context.
Set Windows’ background lighting priority
Windows distinguishes foreground control from background control. Microsoft says a foreground app normally gets control of a LampArray device unless the user specifies otherwise in Settings. When multiple ambient apps are running in the background, Windows uses the priority set there. The setting is device- and USB-port-sensitive: moving a device to another port can make it appear as a different device. See Microsoft’s Dynamic Lighting app documentation.

- Open Settings and search for Dynamic Lighting.
- Open the Dynamic Lighting settings and review Background light control. If your intended controller is listed and needs background access, move it to the top of the priority list.
- If you want Windows itself to control the lights, select the supported devices and choose the available effects and brightness in Dynamic Lighting.
- If a device is not listed, check its compatibility and connection before assuming that changing app priority will make it appear.
Priority is relevant to apps registered as ambient background controllers; it is not a universal switch that makes unsupported hardware compatible. Microsoft’s Dynamic Lighting support page describes Windows’ centralized controls and priority options.
Keep competing apps from controlling the same device
When lights ignore settings, flicker, show unexpected colors, or disappear from an app’s device list, first check whether the device is supported and configured as the chosen app expects. SignalRGB attributes these kinds of problems to conflicts between RGB programs and advises using only one program to control a device at a time. That is vendor troubleshooting guidance, not a universal measurement or proof that every pair of apps conflicts.

- Confirm the exact device is supported by your chosen controller and follows any required setup instructions. Some motherboard headers and controllers need additional configuration, according to SignalRGB’s support guidance.
- Check Dynamic Lighting and its Background light control priority if the device is supported there or the intended app is registered as a background controller.
- Stop or disable the competing utility using its supported method. Closing its window may not stop a background service; SignalRGB identifies persistent services for several vendor utilities as a possible conflict.
- Change one control path at a time, then check whether the chosen app detects and controls the device. Avoid disabling software indiscriminately if it also provides a feature you need.
If the selected app still cannot find the hardware, the cause may be unsupported hardware, an unmet setup requirement, a port change affecting Windows’ device entry, or another running controller. Check those possibilities before switching apps again.

Match the app to the controls you actually need
- Choose Dynamic Lighting when its supported-device list covers your hardware and its available effects and brightness controls are sufficient.
- Keep the manufacturer utility when your device or desired controls depend on the maker’s software.
- Try one third-party controller when its current device support matches your hardware and cross-brand control or its effects are useful to you.
- Use Windows priority settings when the relevant app is registered for background light control; do not expect that setting to add compatibility for an unsupported device.
