Keep two different recovery assets: a separate copy of the complete .vhd or .vhdx file, and a VeraCrypt volume-header backup. The VHD copy preserves the encrypted container and its contents; the header backup can help repair a damaged VeraCrypt header, but it does not contain the volume’s data.
Recovery is easier when you distinguish the file stored on disk, the virtual disk Windows attaches, the VeraCrypt volume mounted from it, and the filesystem that becomes accessible after mounting. Each is a separate layer, and fixing one does not necessarily fix damage in another.

Understand what you are backing up
A VHD or VHDX is a virtual disk file stored at a location on a physical drive. Windows can attach it so the virtual disk becomes available to the operating system; VeraCrypt then mounts and decrypts the encrypted volume inside or associated with that virtual disk. Only after the VeraCrypt volume is mounted can you access its filesystem and files.
- VHD/VHDX file: the complete container file. A separate copy is your broadest protection if the original file is lost or damaged.
- VeraCrypt volume header: metadata needed to access the encrypted volume. A header backup is for header recovery, not a substitute for copying the VHD.
- Mounted filesystem: the files and folders revealed after a successful VeraCrypt mount. Header repair does not repair damaged filesystem data or sectors.
Microsoft documents attaching and detaching virtual disks in Manage Virtual Hard Disks (VHDs). VeraCrypt describes header backup and restoration in its Volume Header Backup documentation.

Back up the VHD and VeraCrypt header before trouble
1. Copy the complete VHD or VHDX file
With the virtual disk in a stable state, copy the entire .vhd or .vhdx file to independent storage. The destination must have room for the whole file and should not depend on the same physical drive as the original. Keep the copy separate from the original; a header backup alone cannot replace it.
VeraCrypt recommends regular backups of important files in its Security Requirements and Precautions. The cited guidance does not set a particular backup schedule, so choose a cadence based on how often the VHD changes and how much data you can afford to lose.

2. Create an external VeraCrypt header backup
- Open VeraCrypt and select the volume or file corresponding to the encrypted VHD volume.
- Choose Tools → Backup Volume Header and follow the prompts to save the external header backup.
- Store the backup separately from the VHD and limit access to it. The header backup is encrypted, but someone restoring it still needs the credentials that were valid when that backup was made.
Keep the volume password, any required keyfiles, and any PIM information needed to mount it. If you use VeraCrypt system encryption rather than a data volume in a VHD, create and retain the Rescue Disk through System → Create Rescue Disk; it serves a different purpose from an external header backup for a non-system volume. See VeraCrypt’s VeraCrypt Rescue Disk documentation.

| Asset | What it preserves or repairs | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Separate full VHD/VHDX copy | A copy of the container file and its contents as they existed when copied. | It is only as current and readable as that copy; changes made afterward are not included. |
| VeraCrypt header backup | A way to restore a damaged VeraCrypt volume header. | It does not copy the volume’s data, repair damaged sectors, or restore a corrupted filesystem. Restoring it also restores the credential state associated with that header backup. |
Open an intact VHD in Windows and VeraCrypt
Attaching the virtual disk in Windows and mounting its encrypted volume in VeraCrypt are separate operations. Microsoft’s documented procedure covers Windows 10, Windows 11, and the Windows Server versions listed on its page, last updated June 25, 2025.

- Open Disk Management with an account that has appropriate administrative rights.
- Select Action → Attach VHD, browse to the
.vhdor.vhdxfile, and confirm. Windows should expose the virtual disk. - In VeraCrypt, select the relevant volume or device, enter the required password and any keyfiles or PIM, then mount it.
If Windows has attached the disk but VeraCrypt has not mounted the encrypted volume, the data is not yet available as a normal filesystem. Do not initialize, format, repartition, or write to a container that appears damaged. First preserve a copy and determine whether the problem is with the VHD file, its virtual disk layout, the VeraCrypt header, or the filesystem.
Recover a damaged VeraCrypt volume header
For an applicable non-system VeraCrypt volume, try its embedded backup header or an external header backup using VeraCrypt’s documented restore function. The embedded backup header is within the volume; an external one is a separate file you created beforehand. VeraCrypt states that non-system volumes have an embedded backup header and can also use an external backup. System encryption does not have this embedded end-of-volume header; its recovery alternative is the Rescue Disk.

- Preserve an untouched copy of the VHD before attempting a restore or other operation that may write to it.
- In VeraCrypt, select the affected volume and choose Tools → Restore Volume Header.
- Choose the relevant source—embedded backup header or external header backup—and follow the prompts.
- For an external header backup, provide the password and any keyfiles that were valid when that backup was created.
A successful mount using the embedded backup header may still display a warning that the primary header is damaged. An external header backup can also represent an older credential state: if you changed the password or other credentials after making it, restoring that header can mean the newer password no longer works. Use the credentials associated with the restored header.

Header restoration addresses the header only. It is not a general repair for a missing or truncated VHD, overwritten container contents, damaged sectors, or a corrupted filesystem. If the file itself or the filesystem is damaged, the appropriate next step depends on the specific damage and layout; the cited VeraCrypt documentation does not establish one universal recovery procedure.

Detach the VHD safely when finished
- In VeraCrypt, dismount the volume first.
- If the VHD is still attached, open Disk Management, right-click the virtual disk, and choose Detach VHD.
Detaching makes the disk unavailable in Windows; it does not delete the VHD file or its data, as Microsoft explains in Manage Virtual Hard Disks (VHDs).
Windows Backup compatibility note
VeraCrypt’s Troubleshooting documentation notes that Windows Backup cannot be used to back up data to a non-system VeraCrypt volume in the Windows context it documents. That statement does not establish behavior for every Windows release, backup tool, or configuration; do not treat it as a universal limitation on all backup methods.
