Epic recommends an authenticator app as its strongest listed protection; save its backup codes somewhere safe before you need them.
How to enable 2FA on your Epic Games account
- Sign in to your Epic Games account and open Password and security in the account settings.
- Find Two-Factor Authentication and select Set up beside the method you want.
- Complete the verification for that method: enter the code sent by email or SMS, enter a code from an authenticator app, or approve the number-match prompt in Epic Authenticator.
- Check the account page to confirm the method is active. Epic says it also sends a confirmation email.

Which Epic Games 2FA method should you choose?
Epic lists four method types. Its account-security guidance says, “Using an authenticator app provides the strongest protection.” That is Epic’s recommendation, not an independent comparison of the methods.

Method descriptions and the recommendation above come from Epic’s 2FA methods page and Epic’s account-security guidance. Pick a method you can reliably reach, and keep a recovery option ready in case that access fails.
Save backup codes and plan for account recovery
Before you lose access
Epic says users who first enable 2FA with an authenticator app are given backup codes. Store them somewhere you can reach if your phone is lost, but not somewhere that would expose them with the phone. Do not share the codes. Epic’s recovery guide describes each backup code as eight digits.

If an authenticator or phone is unavailable
- At the 2FA prompt, choose Try another way.
- Select email verification, if available, or choose Enter your Two-Factor verification backup codes and enter an unused backup code.
- Once signed in, open Password and security to change or disable 2FA as needed, then set up a method you can access.

If you cannot sign in at all
On Epic’s sign-in page, select Trouble signing in?, enter the account email, and follow the recovery prompts. What Epic asks for and whether recovery succeeds depend on the account and what Epic can verify; its guidance does not promise a particular result or timeline. After recovering the account, Epic advises resetting the password and enabling 2FA again. See Epic’s sign-in recovery guide and its post-recovery guidance.

Secure the email address and linked accounts too
2FA for Epic is only one part of protecting the account. Epic recommends using a unique password for Epic and keeping the associated email address one you expect to retain. Verify that address, use a unique password for it, and enable 2FA on the email account as well. A password manager can help generate and store strong, unique passwords.
Epic also recommends securing linked accounts—including Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Facebook, or Google—with unique passwords and 2FA. These steps matter because linked services and email may be involved in access or recovery. These are Epic’s published recommendations in its account-security guidance.

Check SMS availability in your region
SMS is not available for every phone number or region. Epic’s methods page notes regional restrictions. In a separate notice, Epic says SMS 2FA would stop being available beginning August 31 for Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mexico, Azerbaijan, Senegal, and the Republic of Niger; the notice excerpt does not state the year. It also says SMS was disabled in Russia in January 2026. Because availability can change, check your current account settings and Epic’s country-specific SMS notice before relying on SMS. If it is unavailable, choose another method, such as an authenticator app.

Epic says 2FA is required to claim some free games on the Epic Games Store, to send gifts in Fortnite, and to participate in Fortnite competitive events. These are requirements Epic states for those activities; they do not mean every free game requires 2FA. See Epic’s setup guide for its stated requirements.
