Start with the profile recommended for your exact printer, ink, RIP, and media family, then validate it on a sample of the actual substrate. There is no universal numeric recipe for UV printing: the right settings depend on the machine, ink, surface, and what the finished print must do. Compare results against the job’s priorities—detail, color, adhesion, cure, finish, and production speed—before running a full batch.
What to identify before changing settings
Build a baseline around the complete print setup, not just the material name. Record the printer model and firmware, RIP and profile, ink family, substrate manufacturer and finish, thickness, head clearance or print distance, and intended use. Select the printer or ink maker’s documented profile for the closest media family, and save its settings before experimenting. Options described for one printer family may not exist—or behave the same way—on another.

Choose a print mode for the viewing distance and job
Print modes commonly trade image quality against throughput. Use the same artwork and representative material to compare supported modes, and inspect the sample at the distance at which the finished work will be viewed.

As one model-specific example, HP describes Billboard as the fastest mode on its Designjet H35000, H45000, and ColorSpan 5400uv series, while warning that print anomalies may be visible close up; its Production mode balances quality and speed. These mode names and trade-offs are not settings recommendations for other printers. HP also notes that color set can affect output quality and total ink use on that series, but not speed. HP’s print-mode guidance gives the details for those models.

Prepare the material before printing
Use print-grade material when available. Keep the surface clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, and static; follow the printer maker’s cleaning instructions and handle sheets so you do not transfer fingerprints. Surface smoothness and material formulation can affect adhesion, and a result on one supplier’s acrylic, glass, or plastic does not establish that another supplier’s version will behave the same way.
Print a small sample from the actual batch before buying or committing material in bulk. HP notes that adhesion depends on the media and that smoother surfaces can be more difficult. Its UV-curable ink adhesion guidance recommends testing new media rather than assuming a category name guarantees printability.

If adhesion is poor
First check that the substrate is suitable for the ink system, correctly prepared, and matched to the printer’s documented media guidance. A primer or adhesion promoter may help with some combinations, but it is not universal: test it with the exact printer, ink, and substrate, and complete any specified application or drying process before evaluation.
Plan white ink and varnish around the intended appearance
Where the printer and RIP support them, white ink can provide an opaque base on dark or transparent media. Clear varnish can add gloss or texture. Decide whether the job needs a white underlayer, spot white, varnish, or none of these, then follow the supported layer order for that specific printer and workflow. Extra layers use ink and can affect production time. Epson’s SureColor V-series overview is one example of a printer family offering white and varnish for selected media and finishes; its capabilities should not be assumed for other models.

Check curing as part of the whole print system
Use the cure settings specified for the particular ink and equipment. For UV-curing equipment, Marabu identifies lamp condition, reflector cleanliness, lamp focus and distance from the substrate, and transport speed as factors to check. A tacky print or weak adhesion is not, by itself, proof that the lamp needs more output. Marabu notes that poor curing can cause adhesion failures, but incorrect ink choice, poor ink application, or inadequate surface pretreatment can also be responsible; simply increasing cure effectiveness may not solve those causes and can make the ink film brittle. Its UV auxiliaries guidance concerns screen-printing inks, so treat it as general curing and adhesion guidance, not a digital printer profile.
Evaluate a sample before production
Inspect the test print against the actual job requirements. Check color, sharpness, banding, registration, surface appearance, adhesion, and cure. Let the print cure and cool as specified by the ink maker before assessing it.

Where appropriate, use the ink maker’s crosshatch-and-tape procedure as an adhesion screen, with compatible tape. Passing a small adhesion test does not by itself establish durability in sunlight, abrasion, cleaning chemicals, handling, or a particular environment. Test those conditions when the final application requires them. Marabu’s guidance on UV auxiliaries describes crosshatch-tape evaluation after curing and cooling; follow the procedure applicable to your ink and printer.
Change one variable at a time and keep a job record
Once a baseline sample is printed, adjust one setting at a time so you can identify what changed the result. Record the material supplier and finish, printer and ink, RIP and profile, mode, pass or resolution selection, white or varnish plan, cure settings, pretreatment, and observations. Save a successful profile for that specific printer, ink, and material combination; do not treat it as a universal recipe.

- Detail and viewing distance: judge fine features at the expected viewing distance.
- Throughput and ink use: include mode speed and any additional layers in the comparison.
- Adhesion: consider surface condition, material compatibility, and pretreatment alongside cure.
- Finish and cure: confirm that the appearance and cure meet the job’s requirements.
- Durability: test the actual exposure or handling conditions the finished item must withstand.
