How to Choose the Right TV or Monitor for GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox (2026 Guide)

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Choose for your room first, then target the console features you want. For the most headroom on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, look for a genuine 4K display with 120Hz support, verified HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, HDMI Forum VRR, HDR and a low-latency Game Mode. A 4K 60Hz TV remains a sensible value choice if you are happy to give up 120Hz capability.

GTA VI is officially listed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with November 19, 2026 shown as the release date. Rockstar has not published a GTA VI-specific resolution, refresh-rate, HDR or frame-rate requirement, so no display can honestly be described as mandatory for the game. The recommendations below are capability targets for the consoles, not promises about GTA VI’s final graphics modes.

What is confirmed about GTA VI and displays

Rockstar’s official GTA VI listing names PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and shows November 19, 2026 as the coming release date. Microsoft’s Xbox listing shows the same platforms and date. PlayStation Blog says the game “plays best on PS5” and discusses PS5 features, while Rockstar’s extended-look material identifies PlayStation 5 as the platform used to capture that footage.

None of those official materials specifies a required TV or monitor resolution, refresh rate, HDR format or frame-rate target. In particular, Rockstar has not announced whether the retail game will offer a 120Hz mode, a 30fps mode, a 60fps mode, or selectable performance and quality modes. Treat any claim that GTA VI is guaranteed to run at 4K, 60fps or 120fps as speculation until Rockstar publishes those details.

Acer Nitro 27in 4K 3840x2160 IPS 160Hz DFR 320Hz Gaming Monitor VG270K V4 | 0.5ms, AMD FreeSync Premium, 2xHDMI 2.1, DisplayPort, Speaker, VESA Mountable, Bluelight Filter, Flickerless Technology
  • Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
  • Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
  • ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.

The display features that matter most

Feature What to look for Why it matters for PS5 or Xbox What it does not prove about GTA VI
Resolution 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) Matches the maximum 2160p output supported by PS5 and the 4K-class output target of Xbox Series X. It does not establish that GTA VI will render internally at native 4K.
Refresh rate 120Hz panel and a documented 120Hz input mode Leaves room for games that offer 120Hz output and makes 40fps-style modes possible on compatible titles. GTA VI’s refresh-rate or performance modes are unannounced.
HDMI connectivity At least one HDMI 2.1 input with the bandwidth and modes you need Supports high-bandwidth combinations such as 4K at 120Hz, HDR and VRR when the exact port and console settings allow it. An “HDMI 2.1” label alone does not guarantee every HDMI 2.1 feature.
VRR HDMI Forum VRR with a published operating range Matches VRR support on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and can reduce tearing when frame delivery varies. It cannot raise a game’s frame rate or create a mode the game does not provide.
HDR HDR support with a usable Game Mode and sensible tone mapping Allows compatible games to send a wider brightness and color range. HDR quality depends on brightness, contrast, local dimming and the individual panel.
Latency Independent input-lag measurements in Game Mode Reduces the delay between a controller action and the image changing. A manufacturer’s “1ms” response-time claim is not the same as measured input lag.

Resolution: why 4K is the sensible starting point

Sony’s PS5 FAQ states that the console can output up to 2160p, also called 4K UHD, when connected to a 4K display. That makes a 4K TV or monitor the natural match for a new PS5 setup. Xbox Series X is likewise designed around 4K-class gaming features.

A 4K panel does not force every game to render at 3840 × 2160. Consoles and games can use dynamic resolution, reconstruction or separate quality and performance modes. The benefit of buying 4K is that the display can accept the console’s highest standard output and show 4K video from the dashboard, streaming apps and games that support it.

When 1440p or 1080p can still be reasonable

A lower-resolution monitor can make sense at a desk, especially if it is substantially cheaper or offers features such as very low latency. Before buying, confirm that the monitor accepts the PS5 or Xbox signal you intend to use over HDMI; a monitor marketed around PC resolutions may reserve its highest refresh rates for DisplayPort. A lower-resolution screen is a compromise in sharpness and future flexibility, not a GTA VI requirement.

Refresh rate: 60Hz versus 120Hz

TechRadar reports that PS5 and Xbox Series X can generate 4K UHD output at up to 120 frames per second in games that support such a mode. A 120Hz display is therefore useful console headroom. It can show 120Hz output, accept 40fps modes cleanly where a game offers them, and provide more flexibility for other titles.

120Hz is not a guarantee that GTA VI will run at 120 frames per second. Rockstar has not published a GTA VI performance target or confirmed a 120Hz mode. Buy 120Hz because you value the capability across your console library, not because the specification confirms a particular GTA VI frame rate.

What a 60Hz TV can and cannot do

A 4K 60Hz TV can display the consoles’ 4K 60Hz output and remains a practical value path for a sofa setup. It cannot display a 120Hz signal, so a future 120Hz game mode would be unavailable at the panel. If you primarily play cinematic single-player games and are comfortable with 60Hz, the money saved can go toward better HDR, a larger screen or improved audio.

HDMI 2.1: check the actual port, not the badge

HDMI 2.1 is useful when you want combinations such as 4K at 120Hz, HDR and VRR. Rockstar Games Support specifically advises ensuring that the cable connecting your devices supports the HDMI 2.1 specification. Use the high-speed cable supplied with the console or another cable explicitly rated for the required signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TV and monitor manufacturers do not always implement every HDMI 2.1 feature. Some displays have one full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 port and several lower-bandwidth ports; others advertise HDMI 2.1 while limiting resolution, refresh rate or VRR. Before purchase, read the model’s detailed manual or specification sheet and verify:

  • The exact HDMI input that supports 4K at 120Hz, if that is your target.
  • The maximum bandwidth or supported timing for that input.
  • Whether HDR and VRR work simultaneously at the chosen resolution and refresh rate.
  • Whether all HDMI inputs, or only one, support the desired mode.
  • Whether an audio-return feature or receiver in your setup changes the available bandwidth.

Do not assume that a DisplayPort specification says anything about the console experience. PS5 and Xbox connect over HDMI, so the HDMI input’s capabilities are the relevant ones.

VRR: useful insurance against uneven frame delivery

Variable Refresh Rate allows a compatible display to adjust its refresh timing as the game’s frame rate changes. That can reduce tearing and make uneven performance look smoother. RTINGS notes that PS5 and Xbox Series X|S support HDMI Forum VRR, although monitor support can vary by signal and implementation.

VRR cannot increase a game’s frame rate, fix shader stutter or turn a 30fps mode into 60fps. It is most useful when a game’s frame rate moves within the display’s supported VRR range. Check the published minimum and maximum range rather than relying only on the word “VRR.” Also verify that the console can enable VRR at the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDR and Game Mode: picture quality without extra processing delay

Rockstar’s support guidance recommends enabling HDR, selecting Game Mode when available, disabling AI, Smart, Dynamic or Adaptive picture processing, disabling Dynamic Tone Mapping when instructed for the display, and enabling HGiG where supported. These are setup recommendations for a compatible display, not proof of a GTA VI-specific HDR requirement.

Why Game Mode matters

Televisions often add frame interpolation, sharpening, noise reduction and other processing in their normal picture presets. Those steps can increase input delay. Game Mode bypasses much of that processing and is usually the correct starting point for console play. Compare independent input-lag measurements with Game Mode enabled; do not compare a television’s cinema preset with a monitor’s gaming preset and draw a conclusion about responsiveness.

HDR quality is more than an HDR logo

Two HDR displays can look very different. Brightness, black level, contrast, local dimming behavior, highlight detail and Game Mode calibration all affect the result. OLED panels generally provide pixel-level black control. LCD and mini-LED designs can deliver very high brightness and avoid OLED-specific burn-in concerns, but blooming and dimming behavior vary by model. Check current model measurements and warranty terms rather than assuming that every panel in a category performs identically.

TV or monitor: choose around the way you play

Priority TV is usually the better fit Monitor is usually the better fit
Viewing position Couch or shared room viewed from farther away Desk or close seating
Screen size Large sizes and a more immersive living-room image Smaller footprint and easier placement on a desk
Audio Usually includes usable built-in speakers and broad sound processing Often requires headphones, speakers or a soundbar
Console compatibility Many models provide console-oriented HDMI settings, but port capabilities still need checking Must verify that the HDMI input—not just DisplayPort—supports your PS5 or Xbox resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR combination
Latency Can be very low in Game Mode; compare measured results Often designed around low latency, but model measurements still matter
Room conditions Large, bright rooms may favor a high-brightness LCD or mini-LED Controlled desk lighting can make OLED contrast especially appealing

Questions to answer before choosing a size

  • How far will your eyes be from the screen in the seat you actually use?
  • Will the display be shared for films, television and local multiplayer, or used only at a desk?
  • Can your furniture support the stand or wall mount safely?
  • Will a larger screen expose compression, upscaling or lower-resolution modes that you would rather not see?
  • Do you need built-in speakers, multiple HDMI inputs or easy access to a headset?

There is no single “best” GTA VI size. A screen that dominates a small desk can be less comfortable than a smaller monitor, while a modest TV may feel underwhelming from a distant sofa. Match the size to the viewing distance and room use before paying for premium panel technology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OLED, LCD and mini-LED: the picture-quality trade-off

OLED

OLED is attractive when deep blacks, pixel-level contrast and fast pixel response are priorities. It can be an excellent choice in a controlled room or for players who value cinematic image quality. Consider the room’s sustained brightness needs and read the manufacturer’s burn-in coverage and usage guidance before buying.

LCD and mini-LED

LCD models, including mini-LED designs, can reach very high brightness and are often easier to place in a sunlit room. Local dimming can improve contrast, but the number of zones, blooming control and Game Mode behavior differ considerably. A model with a strong specification sheet can still deliver a less convincing HDR image than a well-tuned competitor, so independent measurements are valuable.

Three sensible budget paths

Path Minimum target What you gain What you give up
Value 4K, 60Hz, HDR and Game Mode Large-screen 4K console play at lower cost No 120Hz headroom; verify that Game Mode latency is acceptable
Balanced 4K, 120Hz, VRR, HDR and at least one full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 input The safest all-round capability set for a new PS5 or Xbox Series X|S setup Higher cost and the need to check exact port and VRR details
Premium Balanced features plus stronger HDR brightness or OLED black levels, multiple HDMI 2.1 inputs and validated low input lag Better picture flexibility, room performance and support for several high-bandwidth devices These upgrades improve the display experience but are not confirmed GTA VI requirements

Do not spend extra solely for a logo or an advertised peak number. A balanced display with verified console compatibility is generally a better purchase than a premium panel whose HDMI input cannot deliver the mode you want.

How to verify a display before buying

  1. Identify the exact model and regional version. Specifications can differ between screen sizes and markets even when the product name looks similar.
  2. Read the HDMI table in the manual. Confirm which input supports 4K at 120Hz, HDR and VRR together. If the manual lists only a generic HDMI 2.1 label, keep looking for bandwidth and timing details.
  3. Check console-specific compatibility. Make sure the HDMI input accepts PS5 or Xbox signals, not only the higher refresh rates available through DisplayPort on a PC.
  4. Find independent input-lag results. Look for measurements in Game Mode at 4K 60Hz and, if relevant, 4K 120Hz. Avoid treating pixel response-time marketing as an input-lag test.
  5. Check the VRR range. A published operating range tells you more than a simple “VRR ready” badge.
  6. Review HDR behavior. Look for measured brightness, contrast, local-dimming behavior and whether HDR remains available in Game Mode.
  7. Count the ports you will use. A console, soundbar, streaming box and PC can quickly consume the available HDMI inputs. Confirm which ports are full bandwidth.
  8. Read the warranty and panel-care terms. This is particularly important for OLED ownership and for any display used for long static menus.

Recommended console setup

Physical connection

  1. Connect the PS5 or Xbox directly to the display’s documented high-bandwidth HDMI input.
  2. Use a cable rated for HDMI 2.1 when targeting 4K at 120Hz, HDR and VRR.
  3. If you use an AV receiver or soundbar between the console and display, verify that it passes the same resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR combination. A receiver can become the limiting link.

PS5 settings

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video.
  2. Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p when your display supports 4K.
  3. Open the 120 Hz Output and VRR options and enable them when the display reports compatibility.
  4. Use the console’s HDR adjustment screens to match the display’s instructions, then test a game that supports HDR.

Xbox settings

  1. Open Settings > General > TV & display options.
  2. Set the resolution to 4K UHD when supported.
  3. Open Video modes and enable Allow 4K, Allow HDR10 and Allow variable refresh rate when those options are available for your display.
  4. Use 4K TV details to see which combinations the console detects. If a capability is missing, check the HDMI port, cable and any receiver before changing the display.

Menu names can change with console software updates. The key result is the detected signal information: the console should report the resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR features you actually intend to use.

Troubleshooting common problems

The console will not offer 4K at 120Hz

  • Move the cable to the display’s specifically documented HDMI 2.1 input.
  • Try the console-supplied or another certified high-bandwidth cable.
  • Temporarily connect the console directly to the TV or monitor instead of through a receiver or soundbar.
  • Check the display’s input settings for an enhanced, deep-color or high-bandwidth mode.
  • Confirm that the exact screen size and regional model supports the combination; not every input or size does.

VRR is unavailable or causes an unstable image

  • Confirm that HDMI Forum VRR is supported on the HDMI input in use.
  • Update the display and console software if updates are offered.
  • Test VRR at 4K 60Hz before trying 4K 120Hz to isolate a bandwidth problem.
  • Check the display’s stated VRR range. A signal outside that range may drop VRR or flicker.

HDR looks dim, gray or overprocessed

  • Enable HDR on the console and select the display’s Game Mode.
  • Disable AI, Smart, Dynamic or Adaptive picture enhancements as Rockstar recommends.
  • Disable Dynamic Tone Mapping when the display’s guidance calls for it and enable HGiG where supported.
  • Repeat the console HDR calibration after changing picture modes.

Controls feel delayed

  • Confirm that Game Mode is active for the current HDMI input.
  • Turn off motion interpolation and unnecessary image processing.
  • Compare independent input-lag measurements at the signal mode you use.
  • Check whether a soundbar, receiver or capture device is adding processing delay.

What to buy for different players

For a living-room PS5 or Xbox

Start with a 4K TV that fits the sofa distance. If you want one display to last through several console generations, target 120Hz, VRR, HDR and a full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 input. Prioritize measured Game Mode latency and HDR performance over decorative smart-TV features.

For a desk setup

Choose a monitor whose HDMI input supports the exact PS5 or Xbox mode you want. A 4K 120Hz HDMI 2.1 monitor is the flexible option; a 4K 60Hz model can be good value if you do not need 120Hz. Confirm speakers, headphone routing and console HDR behavior before ordering.

For a bright room

Favor a display with strong measured HDR brightness and effective reflection handling. LCD or mini-LED may be more practical than OLED for sustained high-brightness viewing, but compare the actual model’s contrast and local-dimming behavior.

For the lowest cost

A 4K 60Hz TV with HDR and a responsive Game Mode is sufficient for ordinary 4K 60Hz console output. It is not a future-proof 120Hz choice, and no current evidence says that GTA VI requires 120Hz.
