How to Choose the Right Thunderbolt or USB-C Cable for Your Mac

The right Mac cable depends on your port and whether you need charging, fast data, or video. Learn what USB-C and Thunderbolt cables actually support.

Choose a Mac cable by the task—charging, data, or video—and the capabilities of both devices, not by the USB-C connector shape. A USB-C charging cable may power a Mac but still be too limited for a monitor, dock, or fast drive. Check your Mac’s exact model and port before you buy.

Start with your Mac’s port and exact model

USB-C describes a connector shape, not a guaranteed data speed or video capability. Mac ports and supported interfaces vary by model and configuration, so identify yours before choosing a cable. Apple recommends checking About This Mac and consulting the model’s technical specifications: Identify the ports on your Mac.

Apple says Macs with Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt/USB 4, Thunderbolt 4, or Thunderbolt 5 ports can use Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C cables. A Mac with a USB-C-only port uses USB-C cables. Check the requirements at the other end, too; the Mac’s port alone does not determine what a connected display or drive can do. See About the Apple Thunderbolt Pro cables.

Older Macs with Thunderbolt 1 or 2 have a different interface from modern USB-C ports. Do not assume a USB-C cable plugs directly into them; use the model-specific connection guidance.

Match the cable to what you want to do

Task Starting point Check before buying
Charge a Mac laptop USB-C charging cable or a compatible Thunderbolt cable Required charging wattage and power adapter. Apple’s USB-C Charge Cable does not support video and is limited to USB 2.0 data.
Connect a Thunderbolt display or dock Thunderbolt cable compatible with both the Mac and the device Thunderbolt generation, device requirements, cable length, and charging power if the dock also charges the Mac.
Connect fast external storage Thunderbolt if both the Mac and drive support it; otherwise, a USB-C cable that matches the drive’s interface The drive and Mac interfaces determine actual transfer performance.
Connect another USB-C device USB-C cable suited to the device’s data and power requirements Confirm the cable’s data speed and video support; the connector shape does not establish either.

Charging, data, and video are separate capabilities

A cable can charge a device without supporting fast data or video. Apple states that its USB-C Charge Cable supports charging but is limited to 480 Mbps (USB 2.0) for data and does not support video. Apple describes these as cable capabilities, not independent test results. Details are in Apple’s Thunderbolt Pro cable specifications.

So a USB-C charging cable can be a suitable choice when your only requirement is charging and its power rating meets your needs. Do not choose it for a monitor or assume it will deliver high-speed file transfers.

When a Thunderbolt cable makes sense

A Thunderbolt cable is a sensible starting point for a Thunderbolt display, dock, or high-speed storage connection when the Mac and peripheral both support Thunderbolt. Apple’s cable specifications illustrate why checking the exact model matters:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable: up to 40 Gbps for Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, and USB 4, and up to 100 W charging.
  • Apple Thunderbolt 5 Pro Cable: supports Thunderbolt 5 data transfer up to 120 Gbps and charging up to 240 W. For USB 4, Thunderbolt 4, and Thunderbolt 3, Apple lists data rates up to 80 Gbps.

These are maximum supported specifications for the named Apple cables, not a promise that a connected Mac, drive, display, or charger will reach those speeds or power levels. The devices and their interfaces set the practical limits. Check the cable length and charging requirement as well as its generation.

Connecting a Mac to a display

For a direct USB-C or Thunderbolt display connection, make sure the Mac and display support a compatible connection. If you need an adapter, Apple says USB-C or Thunderbolt display adapters must comply with DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3, or Thunderbolt 4. Its guidance is here: Connect a display to your Mac.

Do not assume that any adapter with a USB-C plug supports video. Confirm that the adapter supports the required video mode and that the Mac and display support the intended connection.

A quick buying checklist

  1. Identify the Mac model and port. Use About This Mac, then verify the model’s technical specifications rather than relying on the connector’s appearance.
  2. Define the job. Decide whether you need charging, data, video, or a combination.
  3. Check the other device. Confirm its interface, data needs, video requirements, and charging requirements.
  4. Choose the cable type and capability. Use a charge cable for power-only needs if its wattage is adequate; choose a compatible Thunderbolt cable for Thunderbolt devices; otherwise match a USB-C cable to the required data and video features.
  5. Verify the cable’s label and specifications. Do not infer speed, video support, or charging power just from “USB-C” or the plug shape.
