To prove the source of funds for a crypto deposit, show both how you obtained the money or crypto and how it reached the platform. Depending on the source, useful records may include bank or investment statements, payslips or tax documents, exchange transaction records, wallet history, mining or staking statements, or gift and inheritance documents. The receiving platform’s request is the controlling checklist: requirements differ by platform and situation.
What the documents need to show
A convincing submission connects the origin of the assets to the deposit. One document may cover the whole path—for example, a bank statement showing salary and the subsequent transfer—or you may need several records that link each step.

- Origin: how you earned, bought, received, or otherwise acquired the funds or crypto.
- Receipt: evidence that the funds or assets came to you.
- Transfer path: records linking your bank account, exchange account, or wallet to the deposit.
Kraken notes that an earning document may not establish that the money was received, in which case a separate bank or exchange statement may be needed. Coinbase likewise distinguishes evidence of the source from evidence of the means of transfer. See Kraken’s document guidance and Coinbase’s examples.
Documents to use for each source
Choose records that match the actual origin of the deposit. These are examples from platform guidance, not a universal checklist.

| Source | Useful records | What the records should connect |
|---|---|---|
| Salary or employment | Payslips, tax documents, employer confirmation, and a bank statement | Employment or income to salary receipt, then to the crypto purchase or transfer |
| Business income | Financial statements, tax or sales records, invoices, and statements showing payment | Business activity to revenue received, then to the purchase or transfer |
| Investment or asset sale | Broker or investment statement, sale confirmation, and bank statement showing proceeds; exchange or broker records for crypto investments | Sale or investment proceeds to receipt, then to the crypto purchase or transfer |
| Another exchange or hosted wallet | Sending exchange statement or transaction record showing your account identity and the relevant withdrawal or wallet address | Your account at the sending service to the transfer and receiving platform |
| Your own external or unhosted wallet | Wallet statement, transaction export, or clear screenshots showing dates, asset, amounts, and wallet address; evidence of original acquisition if requested | Original acquisition or other source through wallet activity to the deposit |
| Mining | Mining payout statements or other records of rewards; the platform may ask for records identifying you or the equipment | Mining activity and rewards through the wallet to the deposit |
| Staking or crypto lending | Staking pool, lending platform, or wallet statements showing the activity and receipt of rewards or income | Service or activity to reward receipt, then to the deposit |
| Gift or donation | Donor letter, affidavit, or transfer document, plus a bank or wallet record showing receipt | Gift and donor to your receipt, then to any onward purchase or transfer |
| Inheritance | Probate or other legal transfer document, plus records showing receipt and onward use | Inheritance to your receipt or asset transfer, then to the deposit |
| Other source | Official records explaining the source and showing receipt; ask the platform which records it needs for an unusual case | The stated source to receipt and then to the deposit |
For gifts and inherited assets, the legal or donor document explains why the assets were transferred; the receipt and transfer records establish what happened afterward. Depending on the platform’s request, you may need both.
What to provide for common crypto transfer paths
Crypto sent from another exchange
Use the sending exchange’s statement or transaction record. It should identify your account and show the relevant withdrawal or transfer, including the wallet address or transaction details requested by the receiving platform. This connects the account you control to the deposit rather than merely showing that crypto exists somewhere.

Crypto sent from your own wallet
Provide wallet activity—such as a transaction export, statement, or clear screenshots—with relevant dates, asset, amounts, and address details visible. A balance screenshot alone may establish possession, but not how the crypto was acquired. Coinbase’s examples call for wallet activity and evidence identifying the original source when needed; Deribit also cautions that a portfolio display without information about profit or source may not qualify. A crypto tax document or capital gains/losses report can be supporting evidence, but does not replace the source and transfer trail or guarantee acceptance. See Deribit’s guidance and Coinbase’s examples.

Source of funds is not the same as source of wealth
Source of funds (SoF) concerns where the money or assets in a particular transaction came from. Source of wealth (SoW) concerns how you accumulated your wider financial position over time. A platform may request evidence of the deposit’s transaction chain, broader financial background, or both. A general wealth document does not by itself prove that the specific crypto deposited came from that wealth. See OKX Europe’s explanation and HMRC guidance.

How to prepare a clear submission
- Read the receiving platform’s request. Identify whether it asks for the original source, proof of receipt, the transfer path, source of wealth, or a combination. Follow its instructions on date range, redactions, file type, and which records are acceptable.
- Build the evidence chain. Put the records in chronological order, from origin to receipt to deposit. Add a short factual note if the chain includes a wallet or account change, or if a gap needs explaining.
- Check that key details are visible. Keep your name or other requested identifier, issuer or platform, dates, amounts, currency or asset, transaction details, and relevant wallet addresses readable.
- Submit complete, legible records. Follow the platform’s requirements for full statements or exports. For example, Crypto.com asks for the full document and clear transaction details; Kraken has its own identity, date, and document conditions. Check the current request rather than assuming one platform’s rules apply to another.
There is no universal document set or acceptance guarantee. If the source is unusual or the available records do not connect all the steps, ask the receiving platform what additional evidence it needs before submitting. Coinbase, Kraken, and Crypto.com publish platform-specific examples: Coinbase, Kraken, and Crypto.com.
