Start with the exact service address, not the dish. Enter it on Starlink’s availability map and checkout page before comparing plans. Your address determines whether service is approved, which plans and hardware are offered, the monthly price, and how much local network capacity is available.
For a stationary household, begin with Residential. Choose Roam for an RV, camper, temporary site, or frequent travel; its international, ocean, and in-motion rules depend on the country and plan. Priority is intended for higher-demand business, government, and institutional use. For hardware, Starlink Mini is the practical choice when portability, 12–48 V DC input, or low power consumption matters. Standard 4 is better for a conventional fixed installation with a larger power budget. Performance Gen 3 is a specialized higher-capability option that requires address-level eligibility checks.

Whichever plan and dish you select, use the Starlink app’s Check for Obstructions tool before ordering. Trees, poles, roofs, and other objects in the dish’s view can cause dropouts; a roof, wall, or pole mount may be necessary.

Starlink is not sold at one universal price with one universal set of features. The service address controls availability, regulatory approval, local capacity, plan eligibility, and the price shown at checkout. A plan that appears in one town may be unavailable, capacity-limited, or priced differently at another address.

Starlink’s current availability map covers more than 150 countries, territories, and other markets and advertises speeds of up to 400+ Mbps in most places globally. Those are map-level indications, not a promise that every subscriber will receive that speed. Congestion, obstructions, weather, Wi-Fi, cabling, and the selected plan all affect the result.
Use the availability map and checkout together
- Open Starlink’s availability map and enter the complete installation address, including the country or territory.
- Record which service families and hardware kits are offered. Do not assume that an address eligible for Residential is also eligible for Roam, Priority, or a particular dish.
- Continue to checkout far enough to see the recurring monthly charge, one-time hardware price, taxes or fees shown for your market, and any data or travel conditions.
- Check the address again if you plan to use the terminal somewhere else. A service address is especially important for Residential, which is designed for a fixed land-based household location.
Plan names, prices, data allowances, and hardware availability change. Treat the checkout page for your address as the authoritative commercial offer rather than an old price list or a quote from another country.
2. Match the plan to how you will use it
The central choice is whether the connection stays at one household address, travels with you, or serves an organization that needs higher priority and support. The table shows the distinctions that matter; an item marked “not stated” must be confirmed for your address because Starlink does not publish one global value for it.

Residential: the fixed-home choice
Starlink defines its Residential Service Plan as being “designed for personal, family, or household use at a fixed land-based location.” Select it when the dish will remain at a house, cabin, or other registered property. If you move the terminal regularly, a Residential subscription may not provide the travel permissions you need.
Residential Lite: lower priority at busy times
Residential Lite is not available everywhere. When it is offered, it is deprioritized behind Residential during peak periods. That can mean slower service when the local cell is busy, even if the dish and Wi-Fi equipment are working correctly. Compare the actual monthly price and the likely peak-time trade-off at your address rather than assuming Lite is simply a slower hardware package.
Residential Max: the highest Residential priority
Starlink says, “Residential Max users will experience maximum available speeds and top Residential network priority.” This is still a fixed-location household service. It is relevant when congestion matters more than minimizing the monthly bill, but the price and availability must be checked at the service address.
Roam: mobile and travel use
Roam is the plan family for an RV, camper, worksite, or other setup that moves. Starlink describes Roam as including countrywide coverage, in-motion use, and Standby Mode. Those labels do not remove geographic restrictions: international travel, crossing borders, using the terminal at sea, and operating while moving can each have conditions based on the country, territorial waters, plan, and regulatory approval.

3. Choose the dish: Mini, Standard 4, or Performance Gen 3
The dish affects installation options, power design, portability, and potential throughput. It does not override plan eligibility or a poor view of the sky.
| Hardware | Field of view and orientation | Environmental rating | Average power consumption | Power input or capability | Where it makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starlink Mini | 110° field of view; software-assisted manual orientation | IP67, Type 4 | 25–40 W | 12–48 V input; integrated Wi-Fi; Starlink lists maximum download speeds over 200 Mbps | RVs, campers, temporary sites, battery systems, and portable installations |
| Starlink Standard 4 | 110° field of view; software-assisted manual orientation | IP67, Type 4 | 75–100 W | Designed for a conventional fixed installation with a larger power budget | Homes and businesses with dependable AC power and a permanent mount |
| Starlink Performance Gen 3 | 140° field of view | Not stated in the cited comparison | 70 W | Starlink’s comparison lists up to 475 Mbps download and 75 Mbps upload | Specialized, higher-capability deployments after confirming eligibility and current pricing |
Why choose Mini
Mini combines a compact portable kit, integrated Wi-Fi, DC input, and lower average consumption. Its 12–48 V input fits many vehicle and battery systems without first creating household AC. Starlink lists maximum download speeds over 200 Mbps, although actual throughput still depends on the plan, congestion, obstructions, and the local network.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Mini’s 25–40 W average draw corresponds to roughly 0.60–0.96 kWh over 24 hours if it ran continuously at that average. That is an arithmetic estimate, not a battery-runtime guarantee; inverter losses, charging efficiency, temperature, and other vehicle loads reduce usable runtime.
Why choose Standard 4
Standard 4 is the conventional full-size terminal for a fixed home or business. Its listed 75–100 W average draw is substantially higher than Mini’s, so it suits a site with reliable AC power or a larger solar-and-battery system. At a continuous average, that range is approximately 1.8–2.4 kWh per day before power-conversion losses.
When Performance Gen 3 is justified
Performance Gen 3 is a specialized option rather than the default upgrade for every home. Starlink’s comparison page lists up to 475 Mbps download, 75 Mbps upload, a 140° field of view, and 70 W average draw. These are published capability figures, not a guaranteed result at your address. Verify that the hardware and the corresponding plan are currently offered before designing around them.
4. Verify the sky view before you order
Satellite connectivity requires the terminal to see enough of the sky as satellites move overhead. Starlink’s setup guide states: “Your Starlink needs a clear view of the sky so it can stay connected with satellites as they move overhead.” Trees, poles, roofs, chimneys, and nearby buildings can block that view and cause interruptions.

Use the obstruction scan
- Install and open the Starlink app before finalizing the mounting location.
- Choose Check for Obstructions and follow the on-screen positioning instructions.
- Hold or place the phone where the dish will sit, with the camera aimed at the proposed sky view.
- Scan the entire field, not only the direction that looks open from ground level. Branches that appear outside the immediate view can still intrude into the dish’s field of view.
- Move the proposed location and scan again if the app identifies obstructions. Compare a clear ground location with a higher roof, pole, or wall position.
A scan is a planning aid, not a promise that seasonal growth, wind-blown branches, snow, or a newly built structure will never interfere. Recheck locations where trees are close to the property.

Choose a mount when ground level is blocked
Starlink’s setup guidance suggests a roof, pole, or wall installation when ground-level placement cannot provide a clear field of view. A mount, longer or replacement cable, weatherproof routing, and suitable fasteners can therefore be part of the real installation cost. Do not place a dish on a roof simply because it is high: confirm the app scan, structural attachment, safe access, and cable path first.
Starlink’s legal documentation identifies installation environment, dish angle or field of view, weather, device quality, interference, cabling, and power reliability as factors that can affect performance. A clear sky is necessary but not sufficient for a trouble-free connection.
5. Design power for the dish you actually choose
Power planning is often the deciding factor for an off-grid installation. Start with the dish’s average draw, then add the router, charging losses, and the other loads that share the battery or vehicle circuit.
Recommended Free Tools
- Mini: 25–40 W average consumption and 12–48 V input make it the natural first candidate for a 12 V, 24 V, or 48 V DC system. Select wiring, fusing, connectors, and a power accessory rated for the voltage and current of your system.
- Standard 4: 75–100 W average consumption requires a larger energy budget. It is usually more practical where AC power is available or where solar, battery capacity, and conversion equipment are sized for continuous operation.
- Performance Gen 3: 70 W average draw sits between the published Mini and Standard 4 ranges, but its capability and eligibility should be confirmed before selecting it for a remote system.
The watt-hour estimates above assume 24-hour operation at the listed average. A battery that appears large enough on paper may provide less after inverter efficiency, battery reserve limits, cold temperatures, and other loads are included. If the system must operate overnight, calculate the night-time energy separately and retain a reserve for cloudy weather or vehicle starting loads.
Budget for accessories
The dish, router, cable, and power supply are not interchangeable across every kit. Confirm connector type, cable length, voltage range, and included equipment at checkout. A portable setup may need a Mini-compatible DC or USB-C power accessory; a fixed installation may need a mount, cable routing hardware, and weatherproof entry. Buy only accessories listed as compatible with the exact model offered to your address.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Understand travel, international, ocean, and in-motion limits
“Roam” does not mean unrestricted worldwide service. Countrywide coverage refers to use within the market and territory covered by the plan. Taking a terminal across a border can trigger different licensing, service, or time-limit rules. International travel and ocean use have conditions that are not identical to ordinary domestic Roam use.
In-motion operation also requires the specific plan and hardware to support it and may be limited by local regulation. A dish that works while parked is not automatically authorized for a moving vehicle or vessel. Before departure, check the Roam terms shown in your account for each country, the route, territorial waters, and the planned speed of travel.
Standby Mode can pause a Roam subscription between trips, but confirm the billing behavior and reactivation terms in the current offer. If you rely on the 100 GB high-speed allowance, remember that it resets with the billing period and that post-allowance service is unlimited at low speed, not unlimited at the original performance level.

7. Order and install in the right sequence
- Validate the address: Use the availability map and checkout to see eligible plans, hardware, local pricing, and capacity-related qualifications.
- Define the use case: Decide whether the terminal stays at one household location, travels, or supports a business or institution.
- Choose the hardware class: Select Mini for portability and lower DC power, Standard 4 for a fixed installation with more available power, or Performance Gen 3 only after confirming the specialized offer.
- Scan candidate locations: Run Check for Obstructions at ground level and at any proposed roof, pole, or wall position.
- Plan the mount and cable route: Account for roof or pole hardware, safe access, cable length, weather sealing, and the distance to the router or power source.
- Size the power system: Use the published average draw, then add conversion losses, networking equipment, battery reserve, and other household or vehicle loads.
- Review mobility terms: If you selected Roam or Priority, read the country, international, ocean, in-motion, Standby Mode, and data provisions displayed for the account.
- Complete checkout: Save the plan name, hardware model, recurring charge, one-time charges, and any stated data conditions for your records.
- Install and test: Place the dish where the scan is clear, route and secure the cable, power the system, and use the app to verify connection status and obstruction warnings.
8. Solve the most common selection mistakes
The address shows no plan
Do not substitute a nearby address or assume that a different dish will bypass the restriction. Availability can reflect local capacity and regulatory approval. Recheck the postal address, try the exact installation location, and review the map again later if Starlink has not announced service there.
The connection drops even though the plan is active
Run the obstruction scan again and inspect trees, poles, roof edges, and new seasonal growth. Then check cable seating, cable damage, power stability, and router placement. Starlink identifies environmental conditions, interference, cabling, device quality, and power reliability as performance factors, so changing plans will not fix a blocked sky or an unstable power feed.
The RV system works when parked but not while moving
Check that the selected Roam offer and hardware explicitly permit in-motion use in the country where you are operating. A domestic parked connection does not establish international, ocean, or moving-vehicle authorization.
The battery empties too quickly
Compare the measured system draw with the dish’s published average and include the router, inverter, charging losses, and other loads. Mini’s lower 25–40 W average is usually easier to sustain from a vehicle or small battery than Standard 4’s 75–100 W range. If the existing system cannot support the fixed dish, relocate the installation to AC power or redesign the generation and storage capacity rather than relying on an undersized battery.
Peak-time speeds are disappointing
Residential Lite is explicitly deprioritized behind Residential during peak times. Check whether the address offers Residential or Residential Max and whether the extra priority justifies the local price. Also rule out Wi-Fi limitations and obstructions before attributing every slowdown to the plan.
9. A practical decision framework
Use these three trade-offs to make the final choice when more than one option is available:
- Mobility versus installation: If the dish travels, favor Roam and Mini. If it will stay on one property, Residential with Standard 4 generally creates a simpler fixed installation.
- Power budget versus terminal capability: A DC-capable Mini reduces the energy and conversion burden. Standard 4 or Performance Gen 3 may be appropriate when the site can supply sustained power and the address supports the desired offer.
- Peak-time priority versus monthly cost: Residential Lite trades priority for its local offer, Residential provides the normal household tier, and Residential Max targets the highest Residential priority. Compare the actual address-level prices and expected congestion before deciding.
The right combination is the one whose plan permits your location and movement, whose dish can see the sky from a safe mount, and whose power system can run it continuously. Confirm all three at checkout and in the app before committing to the installation.
