Measure your body as that chart directs; if garment measurements are available, compare them with a shirt you already like. “Roomy” is a fit goal, not a reason to automatically size up.
Start with the exact shirt’s fit and chart
Open the product page for the shirt you plan to buy and look for its fit description and size chart. Fit terms such as relaxed, loose, and oversized describe intent, but they do not guarantee the same dimensions across brands—or even across styles from one brand. Lee notes that its measurements vary by style and apply to the product page being viewed (Lee size charts). Forest Ink explains fit terminology for its oversized shirt, while Carhartt distinguishes loose and relaxed fits in its guide (Forest Ink size guide; Carhartt Reworked size chart).

Take the body measurements the chart asks for
Use a flexible cloth measuring tape and follow the chart’s instructions; the key measurements differ by brand and garment. Lee’s guidance describes chest measurement under the arms at the fullest part, neck measurement around the middle of the neck, and sleeve measurement from the center back of the neck, over the shoulder, to the wrist bone. Carhartt Reworked also advises measuring the chest just under the arms and across the shoulder blades, with the tape firm and level.
Match your measurements to the chart’s categories rather than assuming your usual size label will translate directly. A chest measurement taken around your body is not the same as a flat width measured across a shirt.

Compare garment measurements with a shirt you like
If the product page gives garment dimensions, use a button-down that already fits the way you want as a practical reference. Lay it flat and compare corresponding points, such as half chest, shoulder width, sleeve length, and shirt length. Janek Shirts illustrates this comparison method (Janek Shirts’ shirt-measuring guide).
Check how each chart defines a measurement before comparing numbers. Forest Ink’s oversized shirt chart measures chest flat, one inch below the armhole; that flat width is half the garment’s circumference at that location, not a body-chest measurement (Forest Ink size guide). A number is useful only when the measurement point and method match.

Choose between two plausible sizes
Compare the parts that affect comfort and the silhouette you want, rather than treating one larger number as the whole answer:

- Chest: enough room for comfortable movement without more volume than you want.
- Shoulders: placement that suits the shirt’s intended cut.
- Sleeves: reach that works for you, especially if the shirt will be worn buttoned or layered.
- Length: coverage and proportions that fit how you plan to wear it.
Lee and Carhartt Reworked each advise choosing the larger size when between sizes. Use that as a starting point, then check the specific shirt’s shoulders, length, and cut before deciding. There is no universal ease allowance established here for roomy button-downs. Spier & Mackay’s stated allowance of 2.5–4 inches at the chest and 3.5–4 inches at the waist is guidance for its popover shirt context, not a general rule for button-downs or other brands (Spier & Mackay fit guide).
