The right recurring-deposit (RD) instalment is the largest amount you can pay every month after essentials, debt payments, insurance and emergency saving—without relying on an unusually good income month. Choose a tenure that ends shortly before you need the money, then compare the bank’s maturity value, rate calculation, missed-instalment rules and premature-closure cost on that exact cash flow.
What an RD does—and what you are actually choosing
A recurring deposit is a fixed-period deposit funded by regular instalments for a target maturity amount. The State Bank of India describes its RD as a way to build savings through fixed monthly deposits over a chosen period for a specific financial goal. You commit to an instalment date and amount, and the bank pays the accumulated principal and interest at maturity under its published terms.

There are two decisions, not one:
- Amount: how much can leave your account every month without causing missed payments or forcing you to borrow.
- Tenure: how many months the instalment runs so that maturity falls near the date you need the money.
A higher advertised rate cannot compensate for an instalment that is unaffordable, and a long tenure is not automatically better. The useful comparison is the outcome for the same monthly cash flow and the same goal date.

1. Start with the goal and the date
Write the funding requirement
State the purpose in one line—for example, “₹90,000 for a course fee in June 2029.” Record the month, not only the year. Then subtract money already set aside for that purpose. The remaining gap is the amount the RD must help fund.

Do not count an uncertain bonus, a possible gift or an investment that may lose value as existing funding. If the goal is non-negotiable, base the plan on money already available or on an instalment your ordinary income can sustain.
Build in a timing buffer
Set maturity one or two payment cycles before the bill is due when the recipient, transfer process or admission deadline is inflexible. A deposit that matures on the same day a payment is required leaves no room for bank processing, weekends or an instruction that was entered incorrectly. For a flexible purchase, a shorter buffer may be acceptable; for a fixed deadline, choose the earlier date.
Separate this goal from emergency cash
An RD is designed for a dated objective. Keep emergency money in an account or instrument you can access without closing the RD. Using emergency cash to keep an instalment alive defeats the purpose of the reserve and can create a premature-closure cost.

Calculate a safe ceiling
Use take-home income, then subtract these items in order:
- Essential living costs such as housing, food, utilities and transport.
- Contractual debt payments and insurance premiums.
- The amount you need to build or maintain an emergency reserve.
- Existing savings commitments and irregular expenses divided into monthly amounts.
The balance is a theoretical maximum, not an automatic RD amount. Leave room for medical bills, repairs and seasonal spending. If income varies, use the lower end of a normal month rather than your best month. A self-employed person or commission earner should stress-test the instalment against a slow month before opening the account.
Use a payment-date test
Check the exact date on which the bank will debit the instalment. Place it after your dependable salary or income credit, not immediately before it. Keep enough balance for the instalment even when another automatic payment is due. A technically affordable amount can still fail if all debits arrive on the same day.

Illustrative affordability check
Suppose a household has ₹70,000 take-home pay in an ordinary month. After essentials, debt, insurance, emergency saving and existing commitments, ₹8,000 remains. Choosing an ₹8,000 RD would leave no margin for a repair or a lower-income month. An instalment below that ceiling—such as ₹5,000 or ₹6,000—should be tested against the household’s actual budget and the bank’s maturity illustration; the example is a budgeting method, not a prescribed percentage.
3. Verify the bank’s instalment grid before choosing a number
Every bank sets its own minimum, increment and maximum. SBI’s published schedule specifies a minimum of ₹100 per month in multiples of ₹10. That figure applies to SBI’s stated product terms; it is not a universal Indian RD rule. A different bank may require a higher minimum, accept different increments or impose a maximum deposit.
| Item to verify | SBI published figure or rule | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum monthly instalment | ₹100 | An amount below the bank’s floor cannot be opened under that schedule. |
| Instalment increments | ₹10 multiples | Your planned amount must fit the permitted increment. |
| Available tenure | 12 to 120 months | The goal date must fall within the product’s allowed range. |
| Other banks’ limits | Not established here; check the chosen bank’s current schedule | Minimums, increments and maximums differ by product and can change. |
Save the rate sheet or product page you relied on, including the date viewed. A branch illustration, online calculator and account-opening screen should agree; if they do not, ask the bank which document governs the contract.
4. Choose tenure from the goal date
Work backward in months
Count the months from the first instalment to the required maturity date. Then shorten the result if you need a timing buffer. SBI lists tenures from 12 through 120 months. A shorter term suits a near-term goal but usually requires a larger monthly contribution for the same target. A longer term can reduce the monthly amount, while keeping your money committed for longer.
| Goal situation | Tenure approach | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Expense due within about a year | Use the shortest eligible term that matures before the deadline. | Higher instalment and less time to recover from a missed payment. |
| Known expense in two to five years | Match months to the date, with a small buffer. | Longer commitment lowers the required monthly principal but delays access. |
| Date is uncertain | Use a shorter commitment or split the goal into deposits with different maturity dates. | More liquidity, but possibly less interest than one longer deposit. |
| Goal is more than the product’s maximum term away | Use successive deposits or another suitable savings vehicle rather than assuming an RD can cover the entire horizon. | Renewal rates and future terms are not guaranteed today. |
Allow for the first and last instalment
Banks may define the first instalment date, debit cycle and maturity date differently. Confirm whether the term is measured from account opening, the first deposit or a scheduled date. Ask for the written maturity date rather than estimating it from the number of months alone.
5. Compare maturity value using identical cash flows
Compare banks only after fixing the monthly instalment, number of months and start date. Enter the same figures into each bank’s RD calculator or request a maturity table. Compare the maturity amount and the interest calculation shown, not just a headline rate.

RBI’s homepage listed term-deposit rates above one year of 6.00% to 6.75% as at October 16, 2026. This is market context, not a guaranteed RD quote for any bank, customer category or tenure. The bank’s current RD schedule and your account-opening date control the offer.
| Comparison field | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Rate | What rate applies to this exact tenure and customer category, and is it fixed for the deposit? |
| Calculation | Does the illustration show how monthly instalments earn interest and how the maturity figure was derived? |
| Payment schedule | What is the debit date, and can it be changed after opening? |
| Maturity | What exact amount and date appear on the bank’s written illustration? |
| Liquidity | Is a loan or overdraft against the deposit available, and on what bank-specific terms? |
Principal-only planning example
If the funding gap is ₹90,000 and the planned term is 30 months, the principal contribution alone is ₹3,000 per month (₹90,000 ÷ 30). Interest may mean the maturity illustration reaches the target with a different instalment, but do not assume an amount until the bank calculates it for the chosen dates and rate. Test ₹3,000 and any lower amount the illustration supports, then retain a safety margin in your household budget.
6. Price missed instalments before opening
An RD is a recurring commitment, so ask for the exact consequence of paying late or skipping a month. SBI states that delayed-instalment penalties apply and that six consecutive missed instalments can trigger premature closure. The amount of the delay charge and the date on which it is assessed should be in the product terms.
- Set an account alert several days before the debit date.
- Keep the instalment amount available in the linked account.
- If income is interrupted, contact the bank immediately instead of allowing missed debits to accumulate.
- Do not assume a missed payment can simply be added to the end of the term; obtain the bank’s written remedy.
For a variable-income household, the ability to maintain payments is more important than selecting the highest displayed rate. A lower instalment that continues for the full term can produce a better real-world result than a larger plan that is repeatedly late.
7. Understand premature closure and withdrawal penalties
Read the exit rule before committing funds. SBI publishes a premature-closure penalty of 0.50% for principal up to ₹5 lakh and 1% for principal above ₹5 lakh. These are SBI’s stated figures and thresholds; they are not a universal rule for every bank or every account.
| Situation | What to verify | Potential effect |
|---|---|---|
| Voluntary early closure | Applicable rate, penalty percentage, minimum holding period and processing steps. | Lower interest and a deduction from the amount paid out. |
| Six consecutive missed instalments | Whether the bank closes the account and how the balance is settled. | The planned maturity date and return can be lost. |
| Emergency access | Whether a loan or overdraft is available against the RD and its interest rate. | Borrowing may preserve the deposit but creates a separate repayment cost. |
RBI’s 2025 deposit FAQ says banks may levy a premature-withdrawal penalty under a comprehensive policy approved by their boards, and that the components must be disclosed when accepting the deposit. Therefore, read the bank’s current disclosure at account opening; do not rely on an old screenshot or a verbal summary.

8. Decide whether a loan or overdraft feature changes your choice
SBI states that a loan or overdraft against the deposit is available. This feature is bank-specific: check the permitted percentage, interest rate, minimum period, documentation, renewal rules and what happens if the borrowing is not repaid. It is not the same as unrestricted access to the RD balance. If emergency liquidity is your main concern, keep a separate reserve rather than treating a possible overdraft as your emergency fund.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches9. A practical decision framework
Use this sequence for any bank and any goal:
- Fix the target: write the amount needed, the month required and money already earmarked.
- Set the ceiling: calculate a sustainable instalment after essentials, debt, insurance and emergency saving.
- Filter the product: remove banks whose minimum, increment or available tenure does not fit.
- Match the calendar: choose a term that matures before the goal date, allowing processing time.
- Run identical illustrations: compare maturity value for the same instalment and months.
- Read failure costs: record late charges, the six-missed-instalment rule if applicable, closure penalties and access options.
- Document the choice: save the rate sheet, maturity illustration, penalty schedule, nomination details and maturity instructions.
Revisit the plan only when income, the goal amount or the required date changes. Do not reset a performing RD merely because a new advertised rate looks attractive; calculate the cost of closing and restarting first.
10. Worked planning cases
Case A: A fixed fee in 30 months
A reader needs ₹1,20,000 and has ₹30,000 already earmarked, leaving ₹90,000. Dividing the gap by 30 gives a principal-only starting point of ₹3,000 per month. The reader should check a 30-month illustration, then select an instalment that remains affordable in a low-income month. If the bank’s product does not offer exactly 30 months, choose the nearest term that matures before the fee date and verify the resulting instalment.
Case B: A goal with an uncertain date
If a purchase could occur anytime between 24 and 30 months, a 24-month RD may mature too early while a 30-month RD may be late if the purchase moves forward. The reader can keep the emergency reserve liquid and consider dividing the target between deposits with different maturity dates, provided each deposit’s minimum and tenure rules are met. Compare the combined maturity values and the inconvenience of managing multiple accounts.
Case C: Income that fluctuates
For a freelancer whose monthly surplus ranges from ₹4,000 to ₹10,000, an ₹8,000 instalment is exposed to missed payments in a weak month. The safer process is to budget from the lower surplus, choose an amount that survives that month, and direct occasional extra cash to a separate liquid goal fund unless the bank permits a formal increase. Never assume an RD can be topped up or modified without written confirmation.
11. Opening and documenting the RD
Before confirming the deposit, check the summary screen or branch form for the instalment, debit date, tenure, maturity date, rate, nominee and payout instructions. Keep a copy of the signed terms and the maturity illustration. Note whether interest is paid only at maturity and whether any instruction is needed to transfer the proceeds.
Best Value
- Confirm identity and account details are correct.
- Confirm the linked account will have funds on every debit date.
- Record the bank’s customer-service route for a missed debit or account change.
- Store the penalty schedule with your household financial records.
- Set calendar reminders for the maturity date and any renewal decision.
12. Common mistakes and fixes
Choosing the amount from the target alone
Problem: Dividing the target by months ignores rent, debt, emergencies and income volatility. Fix: Set the safe ceiling first, then see whether the target date must move or the goal must be funded from another source.
Picking the longest tenure because the instalment is smaller
Problem: The money remains committed beyond the date it is needed, and early closure may reduce the return. Fix: Work backward from the spending date and add only the timing buffer you actually need.
Comparing headline rates instead of maturity values
Problem: Different rates, calculation methods and schedules make a rate-only comparison misleading. Fix: Run identical instalment-and-month inputs through each bank’s current calculator or obtain written illustrations.
Ignoring the exit clause
Problem: A family emergency can turn a planned return into a penalty and lower interest. Fix: Read the premature-withdrawal policy, maintain a separate liquid reserve and record whether a loan or overdraft is available.
Relying on an old rate sheet
Problem: Deposit rates and product rules can change. Fix: Save the dated terms used at opening and verify the current schedule immediately before opening a new RD.
Final checklist
- Goal amount and required month are written down.
- Existing earmarked money has been subtracted.
- Instalment survives a low-income month after essentials, debt, insurance and emergency saving.
- Amount fits the chosen bank’s minimum and increment rules.
- Tenure ends before the goal date with a realistic buffer.
- Maturity values were compared for identical cash flows.
- Late-payment, six-consecutive-missed-instalment and premature-closure rules are understood.
- Emergency cash remains liquid outside the RD.
- Rate sheet, illustration, nomination and maturity instructions are saved.
The best RD is therefore not the one with the largest advertised rate or the smallest possible instalment. It is the deposit whose payment fits your ordinary budget, whose maturity date matches the goal and whose exit rules you can accept before you commit.
