Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor general PC or laptop use, 8–16 GB of RAM is a sensible starting range; choose toward 16 GB or more if you game, stream, edit media, or regularly run several demanding applications. The right capacity depends on the programs you use, so check their requirements before buying. Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is an installation eligibility threshold—not a recommendation for a comfortable experience.
How much RAM do you need?
Use the applications you expect to run as your guide. Microsoft’s PC and Laptop Buying Guide recommends 8–16 GB for general buying needs and says gaming or streaming may call for closer to 16 GB. Microsoft also advises checking the system requirements for the programs you plan to use.

| Use case | Capacity to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| General everyday use | 8–16 GB, in Microsoft’s general buying guidance | Whether your browser, office software, and other regular apps specify more memory |
| Gaming or streaming | Closer to 16 GB, in Microsoft’s buying guidance | Requirements for the particular game and streaming software you use |
| Photo or video editing, or other high-performance projects | 16 GB or more may suit the workload, according to Microsoft | Requirements for the specific creative applications and projects |
These are vendor recommendations, not guarantees of performance. A game or editing project can have different demands depending on the software and workload; there is no single capacity that assures smooth results for everyone.

Eight gigabytes can be an entry-level choice for general use, but whether it is enough depends on what you run. Microsoft recommends 8 GB for keeping a device running long term, while also placing general buying guidance in an 8–16 GB range. If you keep many demanding apps open or use software with higher requirements, consider more memory.

Application requirements offer a useful reality check. For example, Adobe lists 8 GB as the minimum RAM for desktop Photoshop and recommends 16 GB or more on its technical requirements page. That recommendation applies to Photoshop; it does not establish what every creative app or every project needs.
Is 4 GB enough for Windows 11?
Microsoft lists 4 GB as the minimum memory requirement for Windows 11. Meeting that threshold means a PC meets this part of the operating system’s stated requirements; it does not mean 4 GB is a recommended capacity for your workload or a promise of a comfortable experience. Microsoft’s general buying guidance starts at 8 GB. See the Windows 11 system requirements for the full list of requirements.

Should you choose 16 GB or 32 GB?
Consider 16 GB if your workload includes gaming, streaming, or applications whose requirements point beyond an entry-level configuration. Consider 32 GB only when the applications and projects you actually use justify that capacity, or when their stated requirements call for it. The sources cited here do not establish 32 GB as a universal gaming requirement or identify a universally best-value configuration.
Compare the official requirements of your key applications, not just a broad label such as “gaming” or “creative work.” Also check whether the computer can be upgraded and whether the higher-capacity option is supported; a larger number is not useful if the device cannot use it.

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
How to check whether your PC or laptop can be upgraded
Before shopping for a laptop RAM upgrade or desktop memory, identify the exact computer model and verify its supported configuration. Upgrade options vary by device, and some computers have memory soldered in place rather than user-replaceable modules. Microsoft’s memory explainer recommends checking your device’s specifications and notes that upgrade options are not universal.
- Find the exact model. Use the model name or number shown in the computer’s system information, on its label, or in the manufacturer’s documentation.
- Check upgradeability and maximum capacity. Consult the manufacturer’s specifications or service information to see whether memory is soldered, how many slots are available, and the supported maximum.
- Confirm the memory type. Intel distinguishes laptop SO-DIMM modules from desktop DIMM modules. Match the form factor and memory generation specified for your computer; do not assume that a module that physically fits is compatible.
- Compare configurations and cost. Check the price difference against the additional capacity you need, then buy only a module or kit confirmed for your exact model.
If the computer’s specifications do not clearly state whether a configuration is supported, confirm with the manufacturer before ordering memory.

A practical decision checklist
- List the applications and workloads you regularly use.
- Check the minimum and recommended memory requirements published for those applications.
- Use 8–16 GB as Microsoft’s general buying range, adjusting upward when your software and workload warrant it.
- For an upgrade, verify supported capacity, available slots, soldered memory, generation, and module form factor for the exact computer.
- Compare the cost of available configurations without assuming a larger capacity is automatically the best value.
